NBA Injury News: Antawn Jamison is a Game Time Decision
March 11, 2010SABR-Toothed Triber: In the Zone with UZR
March 11, 2010While the Browns continue to address other areas of the team, the one looming question mark continues to be revolving around who will be under center for the 2010 season and beyond. The Browns recently traded for quarterback Seneca Wallace, but it is unknown what his role will be with the team at this stage. Recently releasing Derek Anderson, the Browns do not appear done with their quarterback transactions.
Following yesterday’s rumor that the Browns may entertain trading quarterback Brady Quinn, the player has responded to the media by saying that he would welcome a move if the team is not sold on his abilities to be a starting quarterback.
Veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme is reportedly making his way to Cleveland to spend time with Mike Holmgren, Tom Heckert and Eric Mangini. Delhomme is a former Pro Bowl quarterback that has appeared in the post season multiple times, making the Super Bowl once. His career record as a starter is 58-40, but his more recent seasons have been nowhere near those that had him featured as one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL some time ago.
Delhomme signed a five-year contract last season but was released by the Panthers just weeks ago following a season that saw him go 4-7 with eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions; a career-high mark in only 11 games played.
Regarding Quinn, multiple reports have surfaced regarding the opinion of the Browns front office. Recently, team president Mike Holmgren was quoted saying that he was still unsure about the future of the position.
Other names that continue to be linked to the Browns include Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb. In talking with the Seattle Seahawks, it is reported that Philadelphia is asking for a first-round draft choice for Kolb. Mike Holmgren has traded first-round picks for quarterbacks in the past, but it is unknown what value Holmgren places on available quarterbacks at this stage.

Jake Delhomme makes no sense to me? Why would you bring in Seneca and Jake? I am not a huge fan of Quinn, but I would rather give him another year than go into the season with Wallace, Delhomme, and Ratliff?
FWIW, MK Cabot tweeted Philly is also asking for a 1st in return for McNabb.
Why sign a veteran with diminishing skills like Delhellnome? This team isn’t competing next year so why not see what you have with Quinn? This only makes sense if the goal is to draft a QB in the first round. Then you have Delhomme and Wallace as placement holders until Bradford, Claussen (yuck), whoever is ready to step in.
Is it possible we are bringing in Delhomme just to increase our leverage in the trade market?
Delhomme makes a little sense to me, because he is in fact an NFL starting QB. However I don’t understand why we would bring in bring in a back up (Wallace) or trade a high pick for a back up(Kolb) when we have Quinn on our roster who is still unproven.
@3 And if we’re drafting a QB in the first round (please no), we might as well trade the pick for Kolb.
I hope we get a QB in the draft. I dont want Jake on the field for us, but if the brass running the show feels like he would be a good mentor for whichever young QB they bring in, then I can be alright. Done with BQ. If he cant beat out DA or Frye then Im convinced (as Im sure the FO is) that his future is not in cleveland.
i agree with the above who’ve said they would rather throw Quinn in and see if he can swim.
to me, Delhomme only makes sense as a bridge to the QB of the future (whoever that may be)…but I thought that’s why they got Seneca Wallace – to help tutor a young QB?
bringing in del-thefunkyhomosapian feels like the dilfer situation part II. unless they are bringing him in to play professor and wallace is trade bait..? i dunno. i still feel like quinn might deserve another look, but hey, i don’t have a mustache.
mull mull mull mull mull mull…
EUREKA!
Delhomme is terrible. If you throw as many picks as he did despite the fact that you’ve got an absolutely solid running game to pull some rushing pressure off, you suck.
I don’t even want him as a mentor as all he has to teach is how to be stupidly confident enough to throw 4+ picks in one game multiple times in one season.
I wouldn’t mind Delhomme. It would be odd to bring in TWO new quarterbacks, just to get rid of Quinn.
Ya know how when your car gets stuck in a snow drift, and you sit there gunning the gas to get out, and the tires just spin, and it just gets worse and worse…This is how I feel about the QB carousel. We aren’t getting any better if we get rid of BQ and sign Delhomme, we’re just digging our tires in deeper.
i guess i can buy-off on Delhomme being a backup for Seneca if we trade Quinn.
but man, Delhomme has been terrible, just terrible the past couple years.
Ha ha ha ha, another gag headline! The Browns have a quarterback situation! Ha ha ha. Excellent!
I think I know why this might happen: portmanteau.
Delhommegren.
I chuckle every time I see that picture of Quinn and Anderson. Priceless.
Not sure why Quinn wouldn’t be given a shot from day 1 but given the signing of Wallace and Delhomme visiting logic would dictate that Quinn is on shaky ground. I personally think all this attention being devoted to the horrible position of QB for Cleveland is a mistake. There are more then enough other positions that need to be filled and upgraded instead of QB but yet that’s all that seems to be discussed. Lets face it no matter who you talk about between Anderson, Quinn, Wallace or Delhomme none of them inspire faith or confidence yet that’s now topic #1.
First rounder for Kolb: hmm, wait, snort,
wait, hmmm…
First rounder for Mcnab: HA HA HA HA HA !!!
Second or third rounder for Quinn?:
Think you gotta right now.
they want Delhomme’s opinion – in person
@Harv 21 I’m with you on Kolb and McNabb no sense in using that #7 overall I mean if this is the case just go ahead and draft another rookie QB and continue the same old same old. I personally think H&H are to smart for this, I won’t say the same for some fans who seem stuck in the same old repetitive loop.
I agree about Quinn too I mean if you can get anything for him at this point it makes sense especially since all indications point to him not being the starter this coming season. Take a hit with Wallace and possibly Delhomme or someone else as a backup while building the rest of the team.
I don’t trust these crushes on another team’s back up QB who hasn’t had many starts. And can’t figure out why Philly would dump him when McNab looks at least a little crispy if not close to done. Worry they know Heckert fell in love over there and they’re willing to sell him a noose for a first rounder.
@Harv 21 it wouldn’t be the first time an old team took advantage of one of their ex-employees with that ex-employee working for Cleveland would it? Kinda reminds me of Phil Savage getting Derek Anderson from his former employer, the Baltimore Ravens. there’s no way Holmgren could allow this is there? I’d say no but we just brought in Seneca Wallace, irony?
Why is it so hard for the Cleveland Browns to start over instead of finding a way to repeat the same losing cycle? I mean first Mangini is retained and now Seneca Wallace is traded for and possibly Jake Delhomme gets resigned. Cleveland continues to be the destination for retreads and players at the end of their road and it’s just not in football.
Except we only had to use a 6th rounder for Derek, if memory serves. Kolb would be just a teeny, weeny more pricey. And probably cost us some type of defensive playmaker we could have drafted.
Delhomme is done. I would be outraged that we’re even considering bringing him in, but nothing we can do at the QB situation affects me any more. Like Alexander said, we’re just gunning it and not getting anywhere.
Boogey- That last sentence just sounded like something DA would say. I don’t know if you meant to or not… It seems like you’re saying Clevelanders are retards
If the Wallace trade hadn’t happened, I’d say “Ok, they’re gonna sign Delhomme and draft a QB after all.” I’d at least be OK with that.
I have no idea what sense it would make to have Delhomme AND Wallace here… even if BQ gets traded, I don’t see the logic there, even if we don’t draft a QB (I really would prefer we don’t this year).
I’ve gotta say, I hope the drafting is better than the start of free agency/trading season has been for the new brass.
And I refuse to categorically concede that the team won’t be a contender next year. Cinci, Balti, and Pitt all have some problems and holes in their teams. Hell, all the AFC playoff teams last year had some serious flaws. The Dolphins went from historically bad to wild card in one year. There’s no reason we can’t at least have a puncher’s chance at competing this year, given the right moves.
I know this is about QBs but what ever happened with Ben Watson coming to Cleveland for a visit?
Just draft Locker and be done with it.
So will Troy Smith be playing for the Browns?
TS…
Troy Smith…
TS = Troy Smith?
I felt early on that Quinn might be a servicable QB in the NFL but that boat has left port. He is timid, has no confidence and gets hurt too much. We should see what pick the market will bring for him and be done with the BQ experiment.
Let Wallace battle Jake (or whoever we can sign/trade for)for starter/back-up in training camp and maybe get a 3rd round QB prospect in this years draft. But, only if he’s worth the pick.
We should lower our expectations about what a good QB would mean to a team with so many holes. Get the team to be better on both sides of the ball in the next 2 years, then find a your “can’t miss” QB candidate.
Mark Sanchez proved that a team can win without spectacular QB play. Stick with Quinn and build up the rest – then, draft the next “superstar” QB next year or the year after. Its been said a million times before on here: NO QB could have been successful on this team last year. Not without a viable running game or the right side of an O-Line.
If H&H are itching to trade, trade for some other position that desperately need an upgrade…
@33 – that would be…like…all positions except long snapper and kick returner, right?
Quinn deserves 1 more shot and w/that i mean; he gets all the first team snaps in training camp, something he’s never had… have you ever seen a 1st rd qb treated this way?
but if you can get Kolb, oh then forget it, Brady who.
@34 – our LBs are pretty solid. Our O-line is looking slightly better with Pashos. The DB situation is 2 studs away from being competent (Haden/Berry plus one.) The WRs have a years experience now (Bryant would have been a nice pickup.) Ben Watson will be a big improvement if they can sign him. So, things aren’t as bad as last year…
Jeremy i was gonna ask the same thing. I havent been able to find anything past like monday saying watson was s’posed to be coming to town on wednesday… never confirmed tho.
The 7th pick in the draft for this? http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/K/KolbKe00/gamelog/ I don’t think so. Our 2nd & 4th possible, But no way 7th overall.
Vick Vick Vick!
So, who will we trade Quinn For?
A. Michael “Dawg Pound” Vick
B. One af dem boys from da City of Brotherly Love
C. 6 Lousiville Sulgger Baseball Bats
D. We’re Not Going To Trade Him! Now Stop With this Stupid Pole!
E. He Isn’t Worth Anything: RELEASE THE TANNING PRETTY BOY!
I’m not a Quinn fan, so I say… Buh-bye, Brady.
I’d still like to see Brady be given a decent chance to prove himself. Not to mention, I was really hoping for a game this season where DA and BQ could be quarterbacks on opposing teams playing each other head to head. How awesome (or perhaps embarrassing) would that be to watch?
Whew. Busy day at work. Was terrified I would come here and see that Delhomme signed with us.
I hope it is a smoke screen to show other teams we are really shopping around. I think Rogers and a 2nd for Kolb and a 5th is fair.
Man, there are a lot of people with dumb opinions about QBs lately. Not necessarily on this site, but man. Now, he would’ve had to step up his game, but DA could probably get to the point of throwing 5 interceptions in the most important game of the season and then mentor a young QB on that.
And I guess it almost makes sense to give up a 1st rounder for a 33 year old QB who’s clearly not going to improve his game…for any team…but really only Minnesota if their even older QB retires.
@43: You make sense. So you are on my good side. B/c clearly blog-comment-section-good-sides are a good thing to be on.
WOW, IF ANYONE THINKS TICKET SALES ARE LOW….WAIT UNTIL SEASON STARTS WITH THIS MOVE
