While We’re Waiting… Last Resort Maggette, Amare Pros and Cons, and Gladiator Football
February 17, 2010Grading The Cavaliers: Danny Green
February 17, 2010Browns quarterback Brady Quinn may have a good presence in the huddle. He may even have decent decision making abilities. But one thing he does not have is his head coach in his corner.
Not only is team president Mike Holmgren not completely sold on Quinn’s abilities to be a starter in the NFL, but Eric Mangini is reportedly “not a fan” of the guy who has started only 12 games through his three-year career.
Some may argue that Quinn hasn’t exactly been given a fair crack at proving his worth. Mangini made a controversial move last season by pulling Quinn after only three starts and going with one-time Pro Bowler Derek Anderson. Through all of their starts, the two combined for a very sub par season, winning the last four games of the year with a strong ground attack on offense coupled with solid special teams and timely defense.
Given this, it remains as little surprise that the Browns are a team that continue to find their name in the rumor mill regarding the quarterback of the future. The Fox Sports report claims that the Browns could dangle the seventh overall selection for Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb – one of the few players mentioned as Browns potential targets. Other past reports have linked the Browns to McNabb’s current back-up Kevin Kolb. A third name that has recently entered the mix is soon-to-be free agent quarterback Chad Pennington.
It could also be argued that both Quinn and Anderson would have had a better season if not for competing against the opposing defense with little-to-no weapons on their side. Regardless, the two combined for 11 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and the 32nd ranked passing offense in the league, amassing only 129.8 yards per contest. Only 118 first downs were completed through the air over the course of the entire season, coming in at just over seven per game. For comparison, the Browns allowed almost 12 first downs through the air per game.

Give Quinn them chance before letting go of anything important. It’s still too hard to tell if he is any good, well we know he cant throw the deep ball, but it’s not like he has anyone to throw to. Im ok with bringing in Troy Smith tho
How about that Pryor guy? We could probably get him real cheap.
Vinny Testaverde is also currently not playing for a team.
Sounds like Bruce Gradkowski is gonna be available. UT Rockets anyone? Just sayin…
Observe the photo… Observe!
(sorry all, I couldn’t help myself)
Denny – always the shameless self-promoter!
LeFevour is the steal of the draft this year (at QB).
Back Up Plan A: Keep BQ one more year, Go after Peyton Manning in 2011.
Back Up Plan B: Kurt Warner’s available….
Mangini deserves all the credit for the Browns stinking up the place last year. A mighty stink it was. Brady Quinn should stay one more year and maybe, just maybe, if the offensive coaching can produce, then Brady will produce.
@Vare-A-Jay- What are the chances that some nearly 40 QB would ever want to come out of retirement for any reas… o whats that you say… theres some QB that has done it… for 2 seasons now?… oops, carry on.
Why go for “nearly 40” and accomplished when you can have nearly 40 and making a repeat tour (Garcia) or nearly 47 and the actual king of losing QBs (Testaverde)?
Czar…WTFever his name is, IS just talking out his interchangable orifice (swaps out with his mouth in a nano-second) in order to get hits on his blog so he can save his phony baloney job. Using that as your headline source speaks volumes about your blog.
Peace Out

Browns will be struggling again next year via another re-build (I guess this assumes that they actually built something). Don’t waste high draft picks on veteran quarterbacks. It won’t make a difference. If we were a team with playoff potential, then considering a trade but not with the #1.
Actually I was thinking (yes it hurt) and I can see Al “Where’s my viagra?” Davis being willing to take over Rocket Arms 9.45 mil contract. Why don’t we send DA to Oakland?
To trade for McNabb’s a mistake,
And Pennington’s a quarterback fake,
We’ve got Brady Quinn,
So just put him in,
The decision is not hard to make.
@Cribbs Because no one will give us anything for DA, they know he’ll be cut from the team eventually for costs reasons.
LoL. WoW, me and Eric Mangini have something in common.
“Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none.”
@NIKKO: Best comment of the day. We need more comments in poetic verse.
In 12 games, a quarterback completes 160 of 300 passes (52%) for 1,750 yards (136YPG) 9 TD and 18 INT. His rating is 55. Do you keep him or move in another direction?
There is no way I would waste the 7th pick to get Donovan McNabb – his best days are long gone and he always gets hurt.
Kevin Kolb? His line is 79 of 130 for 880 yards, 4 TD and 7 INT and a rating of 65. Sound familiar?
Draft a QB? Bradford and his injured arm? Tebow – NOOOOO! Jimmy Clausen? We can’t even develop the QB we have! Everyone gets excited when Jerome Harrison runs all over the Chiefs. Why don’t you see the same promise in Brady Quinn when he shreds the Lions?
I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Quinn, with any weapons to work with, to know what kind of player he can be.
I’d draft a quarterback later in the draft. Work on developing Quinn and if need be, we can draft a guy if it isn’t working out.
You’d better be sure before you cast a guy off. I don’t think ANYONE can say with any certainty whether this guy can succeed. There are plenty of people (Denver, Kansas City, Carolina) who are just waiting for a shot to get this kid. That should tell you something right there.
Mangini isn’t a fan? Tough! If this team struggles, you can bet the president will come down from the booth and put the headset on again.
By the way – if you cut the quarterback described in the opening, congratulations! You just released Troy Aikman.
Theres a difference between a rookie putting up bad numbers, and a 3rd year guy putting up bad numbers. The fact is Quinn hasnt shown great improvement. One could argue that he has actually became worse in the past 3 years. Its just not a good sign when this kid has had vast opportunity to show what he has and has yet to wow anyone. With Holmgren’s track record, Ill let him decide if he thinks he has something, but you have to cut losses before all value is lost sometime.
also- It is Mangini’s call. Holmgren won’t force feed him something he doesnt want. in no way is that a recipe for success.
Is the author of this story the same writer that was certain the Cavs were getting Stoudemire? Let’s go BRADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quinn does suck you got to give him time to develop he is better than anderson anyday.if you dont believe maybe you should go root for some other team.we kardiac kid fans rememeber give him his fair shot to prove what he can do
So… Eric Mangini = great guy, bad head coach. Anderson needs to be kicked out of the NFL for being the worst QB ever. I think Quinn has the potential, hence 290+yds in the first quarter. (Even if it was against KC) I think that if the Browns would have the guts to call plays that allow him to throw the ball he would be fine. 3rd and 9… hey Wide reciever do a 2 yrd in. everyone do it for that matter. I’ll take Brady, a decent Wideout, corner from Florida, another good Linebacker, and a big defensive lineman. could move up a few ranks. “Maybe”
We can’t get much for Anderson at this point…and maybe not much for Quinn. However, if Weiss wants to come after him to reunite some sort of ND manlove relationship together..let him. But I don’t think that anyone can honestly judge BQ at this point.
I feel like we’re turning into the Bengals.
…and this is why the Browns will always be a 4-12 team. The fans’ favorite player is the backup quarterback, no matter who he is and no matter how good the starter is. If the Browns ever want to contend again, they’ve gotta stick with a QB through the bad times. It’s my belief that if Butch Davis had stuck with Tim Couch, he’d still be the head coach of the Browns today.
Wow! Another [edited] article about the QB. Trade our 1st round pick for McNabb? Could anyone really be that dense? McNabb isn’t exactly a young man any more. Why would you waste a high pick on a stop-gap measure? You can use that pick to get a player that will be a top contributer on this team for years to come.
And what do you expect from Quinn? How many games does he have under is belt? I think he has fewer NFL starts than Stafford or Sanchez, but has better stats. What you see from Quinn is what is to be expected considering his on field experience.
There won’t be any decent QB in free agency this year that aren’t in their 30’s. We have much higher needs than wasting high picks on a QB. At #7, one of Haden, McClain, or Berry will still be on the board, and the best available of those 3 is who we HAVE TO PICK!
Sorry for be somewhat abusive, but I am sick of hearing about wasting draft picks on a QB. Lets get some of the other holes filled, give Quinn a season to see if he lives up to a 1st round pick, and if not look for a QB next year.
I would give up a 7th round pick for McNabb in a heartbeat. Although, anyone would be lucky to get him for a 3rd. He’s an All-Pro quarterback that can still produce for God’s sake. Of course Anderson is an All-Pro but then he can’t produce. Quinn may make a really good backup some day if he finds the right system. Don’t get me wrong. I like him and want him to succeed. But he just doesn’t have the goods. He has spent WAY too much time lifting and not enough time throwing.
Scott the writer of this article has no proof of either Magini or Holgren is a fan of Quinn. MORE YELLOW JOURNALISM
@brownshelmet: except for the fox sports article he linked to in the post, stating “Holdover coach Eric Mangini isn’t a fan of Brady Quinn and no one is sure about Derek Anderson, either.”
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/whats-in-store-for-new-gms
brady quinn needs weapons. no one else is a sure thing so why bother right now and no one would be that good with who the browns have. getting rid of K2 was dumb.
[…] at the forefront of all questions. While Derek Anderson is due a roster bonus and Brady Quinn has done little to impress Mike Holmgren and Eric Mangini to this point, there is reportedly a growing interest in soon-to-be […]
To me Quinn was never given a good shoot at QB,in my opinion Mangini is the one that is a no body is just bad. I will not be a Browns fan from this day forward as the top brass are half wits and hope He is QB FOR Denver and beats the crap out of the Browns. The two new QB’S THEY got are one a no body the other a has been. D.G.
