April 11, 2016In what has turned into a rollercoaster of a career, with more dips the past three seasons, it appears that former Cleveland Indians first baseman and outfielder Nick Swisher is set to head back to where his best years in the MLB took place. According to ESPN’s Andrew Marchand, the 35-year-old will ink a minor-league deal with the New York Yankees after being released by the Atlanta Braves.
The Yankees may be bringing him back, but manager Joe Girardi said that it will be quite awhile until he is with the major league squad in the Big Apple, per nj.com’s Brendan Kuty.
“For us, he’s played the outfield and first base, mostly the outfield for us when he was here. I think he has to make sure that he’s right and he gets going before you start talking about him. But when he was here, he was extremely productive and loved playing here.”
Swisher will work out at the club’s training facility in Tampa, Florida before heading to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Once he is ready to go, Swisher is expected to be a backup first baseman for the Yankees, taking the place of Dustin Ackley behind Mark Teixera.
“We believe in having depth in our organization. Swish was a good player and has been a good player for a long time. So if one of our guys was to go down, we wouldn’t’ necessarily have a true first baseman. Swish is a guy who could do that or he could play the outfield.”
Before signing a four-year, $56 million deal with Cleveland prior to the 2013 season, Swisher spent four seasons with the Yankees. In pinstripes, he batted .268 with 105 home runs, 134 doubles, 349 RBIs, and 327 strikeouts from 2009-12.
While his best years in the league came in New York, he struggled mightily for most of his tenure in the 216. Expected to be a big addition to a lineup that needed a big-time hitter, Swisher batted just .228 with 51 doubles, 32 home runs, 113 RBIs, and 273 strikeouts in a little over two seasons in Cleveland from 2013-15. He not only struggled at the plate, but he struggled to stay on the field as well. The 6-foot, 195-pounder battled through knee injuries that never seemed fully recovered.
Here’s hoping Swisher’s knee injuries will subside enough to allow him to play in MLB and produce at the plate again. Yes, even for the Yankees.

considering the pee-wee porch in right field & the frailty of mark texeira , this move makes sense.
This is great news for my second favorite baseball team: Whoever is playing the Yankees.
Exhibit A that the Yankees farm system is as barren as claimed. Bro has just finished convincing two orgs in consecutive years that nothing he contributes justifies his sunk cost.

Give the Indians credit. It’s much nicer reading about Zimmer, Frazier, Clevenger and co tearing up the minors than Swisher on his upteenth rehab assignment.
