ESPN pens NFL Draft Profile of Paul DePodesta

April 11, 2016Cardale Jones didn’t go nuclear on the NCAA, though I’m sure some other outlets will describe it as “OHIO STATE QUARTERBACK GOES HAMMY MCBONKERS ON NCAA (YOU WON’T BELIEVE IT UNTIL YOU SEE IT)” in their headlines. It is not as if Cardale Jones is unfamiliar with the machinations of social media, so it should not be a shock to see him with his honest take. In fact, the former Buckeye and hopeful-NFL draft pick was downright rational in talking about the NCAA. It’s a good thing too because it’s always easier to make a point when you aren’t screaming or foaming at the mouth.
Here’s Cardale Jones’ non-rant.
I'm so happy to be done with the @NCAA and their rules & regulation. They do any & everything to exploited collegiate athletes.

It's deeper than athletes thinking we should get paid. The @NCAA control our lives with insane and unfair rules.
— Cardale Jones (@Cardale7_) April 11, 2016
Why shouldn't a collegiate athlete be able to use their OWN likeness/brand to benefit themselves but yet the @NCAA can sell there jerseys🤔

That's my 2cent on the @NCAA .It's not like that's going to change how the athletes are exploited, even tho 98% of people feel the same way

The one place where I think Cardale Jones might be wrong is in it not changing. The NCAA has seen massive amounts of change over the past decade and that trend shows no signs of stopping. From attempts to unionize at Northwestern to player protests, and the Ed O’Bannon lawsuit – the old way of doing business that compensates world class athletes with the promise of college degrees doesn’t seem like it’s written with any sort of permanence. Even items such as signing a National Letter of Intent have been under question in recent years and some football players have even decided against signing one.
NCAA athletes have already seen the NCAA pass legislation for stipends, conferences (such as the B1G) enact four-year guaranteed scholarships (instead of traditional year-by-year model), and even cream cheese is now allowed to be given with bagels to college athletes.
Even as the conclusion is very much in doubt, it seems like the general direction truly is almost a consensus at this point. However, the NFL is not unlike the NCAA in their desire to control player lives, so it remains to be seen whether or not there is any effect on Cardale Jones draft stock from his rather honest assessment.

My goal in life is to ghost-write Cardale Jones Player’s Tribune article. You know he will have one someday.
He ain’t come to play school.
“The NCAA has seen massive amounts of change over the past decade and that trend shows no signs of stopping”
I would vastly disagree with calling it “massive amounts”. The deal is pretty much the same as it always has been. Some kids get a bit more for full cost of attendance, and now schools can guarantee four year scholarships if they want (while still being able to rip that away from a kid anyway), but the deal isn’t much different.
And then this past week, just ended satellite camps, which were designed to help prospective athletes, because a couple whiny millionaire coaches in the SEC didn’t want any extra competition. There’s no evidence that the powers that be actually care about these kids.
Of course they don’t care about the kids. Look at Craig’s next sentence – it is all about what the kids are doing to finally stand up for themselves and it is working (been slow, but continual past 5-6 years).
I’m not seeing much change and definitely not the “no signs of stopping”
The unionization process failed. O’Bannon won future athletes a bit more scholarship money, but that was mainly about post-graduation athletes earning money for use of their image.
Taken straight from the final ruling: “To preserve the character and quality of the ‘product,’ athletes must not be paid”
O’Bannon’s case has now actually established precedence that college athletes should not get paid. We’ve created a significant barrier to future progress.
