December 12, 2008Bruised Cavaliers Pull Off 11 Straight
December 13, 2008Our 12 Days of a Cleveland Fan Christmas continues! Great responses to yesterday’s question, and the randomly selected winner was Bobby O’Brien! Congrats Bobby! He’ll be sporting a great new WFNY designed shirt! The giveaway rolls on today, with an Ohio State themed prize (Ooopps! I’m not supposed to give away hints am I?)
As the contest continues I implore you to use the right format in order to qualify for the drawing. Here again is how to enter:
Each day of the contest, we will ask a question for you to answer. Respond to the giveaway post with a comment formatted like this- restate the question, then answer it in EXACTLY 64 words. (Last year of a major Cleveland championship.)
– You may only enter once each day. You are free to comment on each other’s answers, however.
– The winner will be chosen at random from the qualifying entries. Winners will be notified the following day by email (make sure the email address you registered to comment with is a real one!) You must be at least 18 years old to win, and only one winner per household during this giveaway please.
The prizes range from tickets to the Tribe home opener, to books, to jerseys, and even a few WFNY items thrown in there too. (Yes, shameless self-promotion!) No complaining about which prize you win, those have been randomly selected for specific days of the contest. Sound good? Hey it’s free stuff, how picky can you get?! All answers have to be submitted by midnight, Cleveland time. Don’t worry about having the same answer as someone else, just put it in your own words. It isn’t a contest to see who is a better writer. Remember though…EXACTLY 64 words!
With that said…Here’s today’s question to respond to:
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?

Thanks WFNY… I’ll wear it with pride!

Obviously the Masters is the answer here, but since that’s a little cliché… I’m going to have to go with the WTA Tour event that’s held in Miami. You get all the hottie tennis action, (extra Ivanovic, hold the Mauresmo please). ESPN can throw in some Erin Andrews sideline coverage for me (even though I wouldn’t be watching TV). Seriously, these winters get depressing!
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?
This is an easy one. Every year I watch the spectacle that is the Army-Navy game. Even though Army is down watching the Cadets and Midshipmen march into the stadium chokes me up every time. While these guys may not have a pro career, they play their hearts out to bring pride to their school. It would be an honor to attend this game.

I’m gonna have to go with the World Cup. Not even to witness Team USA. Just to see how crazy the fans are. Plus I enjoy international soccer. Guys like Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Terry, and Ferdinand on one side against Ronaldinho, Robinho, and Kaka on another. Just the talent that is together on the pitch at one time would be amazing to see.

World cup finals. It’s the world’s biggest game. Think the Super Bowl times ten. I love watching international soccer because it really is exciting. My friend was in Switzerland during pool play of the last tourney, and he said the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. I don’t think America will ever make it because our country lacks interest as a whole, which is a shame.

For me, it is an easy question though is not a team sport. If I could choose any sporting event it would have to be the Masters. To go to Augusta in the spring and sit at the green at 15 to see those golfers brave enough to go for that green in two. Obviously I would have a frosty beverage in my hand.
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?
I would go back in time and go to the Oklahoma Vs. Boise State 2007 Fiesta Bowl. That game was one of the most exciting college football games since the Buckeyes national championship. The statue of liberty, the running back proposing to his cheerleader girlfriend, and just the sheer excitement that was the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. It was one for the ages. Go Buckeyes!!!

Arsenal/Manchester United at Old Trafford. The two most storied teams in the English Premier League facing off at night would be an amazing experience. Not only is the rivalry deep in tradition but the two teams always have some of the world’s best. Going to a pub beforehand and having about five big warm pints of Wells’ Bombadier would top it all off.
Was about to say the same, JJ.
The Old Firm rivalry (Celtic/Rangers), is one that is above all else really. It’s not a city divided, its a country divided. The Catholics who immigrated from Ireland for Celtic, and the Protestant population for Rangers. It goes beyond sport, into politics, and religion. It would have to be my choice.
@ IRB- Awesome pick for an individual game. Red Devils vs The Gunners. Rooney vs Henry (at least when i knew it…haven’t been following the EPL for too long). I’m sure one guy that would just have the greatest perspective on the rivalry is Ryan Giggs. He’s a Red Devil for life.

I’m going to go off the beaten path and say the Kentucky Derby. I’ve always been invited to go every year the last few years and have been unable to go because of school obligations. I want to drink a mint julep and party it up while hopefully winning some money betting on the horses. It’s basically one of the best American sporting traditions.
I would love to go to the World Cup, but in an attempt not to repeat previous answers I’d have to go with a Michael Jordan versus Larry Bird McDonald’s commercial style hot shot challenge. Big Mac and Fries, I’ll play ya for it. Off the express way, off the billboard, through the window, off the scoreboard, nothing but net. These commercials were great.
I would love to see a legitimate college football championship game. Not the mess with the BCS. I want to see the top 8 or 16 teams duke it out, leaving two undeniably deserving teams to play for the national championship. Of course, I’d love it if the Buckeyes would make it. But if not, whichever two teams were playing, this would be great!
Oops, forgot to restate the question. Can’t go back and edit comments though.

Game 1, World Series. Doesn’t matter who is planning. Third base side, three rows from the field (need two rows of people to lean on when going for the pop fly into the stands). Full teams, lined up, with coaches, tipping their cap at introductions, except for the starting pitcher warming up in the pen. The flyover.
The anthem: “The brave!”
“Play ball!”
Heaven.
“What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?”
How is this answer not Wrestlemania. What could be more fun than getting drunk with your buddies earlier in the day and then seeing one of the most epic sporting entertainment events later that evening. I could not even tell you who is a champion these days but I know I still would go and for sure give the Ric Flair “Whooooooo” every second.
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?
Without a doubt, I would have to say the Superbowl. I don’t even have a specific Superbowl I’d like to see; I would just like to see one. I can safely say this because, as a Browns fan, it’s not looking like that would involve my favorite team any time soon. Maybe the Brownies will prove me wrong before I die, but who knows?
JJ – yea I thought I’d go with a single game – if I could choose anything it’d be the Euro Cup or the World Cup. That or Duke/UNC at Cameron. That would be a hell of a time as well.
“What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?”
It’s a tough decision, but I think the best sporting event would be Game 7 of the World Series. Whether the game is a slugfest or a pitcher’s duel, I’m sure it would be a classic. The best would be if a scrappy, low payroll team came from behind to win it in the 9th against one of the big spenders *cough* Yankees *cough*.
“What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?”
Like Prospect Donkey, I would love to see any of the Academy games. I really admire how dedicated they are. No matter how bad their team (Army), they still come out and give 100 percent. I know how little time they spend practicing compared to other college teams and yet Air Force and Navy are regularly good teams. They win because they have heart.
@ IRB- Duke/Carolina would be good…
I think I might have to go with an NBA All-Star game. Went to the last MLB All-Star game in Cleveland (SANDY ALOMAR!!!) and I have to say it was awesome to see all that superior talent in one spot. The Pro-Bowl would be nice because it’s in Hawaii, but that doesn’t even resemble competitive football. The NBA A.S. game may not have much defense, but it would be entertaining!
IRB- Wanted to run this soccer rivalry by you to see how insane you think it would be to attend this…Celtic/Rangers. Almost Ohio State/Michigan, Duke/UNC of soccer rivalries. Plus you add the fiery Scottish fans and whats not to love!
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?
I have attended Browns/Steelers match ups and felt the intensity and passion, the only sporting event that matches it is The Old Firm derby in Glasgow. Every year Celtic and Rangers battle each other for ninety minutes for Scottish Supremacy, but there is also 400 years of sectarian violence with the two. It’s like Israelis and Palestinians played a soccer match for bragging rights.
What sporting event NOT involving your favorite team would you most like to witness in person?
North Carolina vs. Duke. Dean Smith, Coach K, Jordan, Chapel Hill, Durham, Cameron Crazies, Carolina Blue, Navy Blue. Clearly one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. Two well respected and storied college programs from one of the best basketball conferences in NCAA Division 1. Being a part of the crowd and game day experience would be something to cherish for a lifetime.
JJ – I thought about writing that one up, but my love for ale overcame my enjoyment of scotch in terms of wanting to go to Man U/Arsenal – that and the quality of play. The overall skill level of play in the EPL is much better than that in the Scottish Premier League so I think that going to the EPL game would be more fun to watch. The overall environment for Celtic/Rangers would probably by a heck of a lot more fun. Celtic/Rangers is an amazing rivalry, and I think that it would be an insane match go to see, since the whole city of Glasgow has to be absolutely surreal place to be during a game like that.
I’m not going to make this qualify cause I don’t want to count… The event for me would be whichever game it is that rich rod gets fired after. That guy is a royal a**hat. Even though it’s good for my beloved buckeyes, I hate seeing that guy at michigan. Removes what lil bit of respect I had left for michigan football.
