@brian…i disagree, 8.5 back at this pt of the season says to me that we are DONE. it pains me to say it, but it’s time to start looking at deals to help next year. bye bye cc…
well, if the trend continues (almost playoffs with one of the best records in baseball, poor season, ALCS, poor season…) they’ll be in the world series next year!
right?
right guys?
I was just thinking something similar to buu’s thought – though more modest – I figure the pattern dictates a good season next year. As long as the now injured are healthy again (actually healthy and performing to normal ability), I don’t see why not.
As for DCBucks’ comment, hey, this is a place for us to express hope, grieve when let down, and take consolation in hopes for next year, thus the title of the blog…yeah, they probably were done a month ago, but it takes truly devoted fans a while to “get over it.”
1995-World Series
1997-World Series
1999-2nd best record in AL
2000-Missed playoffs for first time in Jacobs Field history
2001-Won division again
2005-Won 93 games, narrowly missed playoffs
2006-Miserable
2007-Won 96 games, narrowly missed World Series
2008-Miserable
Yesterday I was still willing to play for this year. But after being swept by one of the worst teams in baseball…I’m done. We can still play for next year, we should be able to get close to MLB ready players for CC, we can give Carmona all the rest he needs, Laffey and Sowers will get plenty of experience, and we can start playing our young guys. Bring Asdrubal back and lets see if he can work through his troubles, Barfield hasn’t done anything worthwhile with his time here and Carrol is not a long term solution. Start Gut everyday too. And lets see our young pitchers from Buffalo get a shot up here in the bullpen. We need to know which of our guys can be players in this league so we can make a run at a title next year, our rotation will still be solid and hopefully Victor can return to form. And maybe Hafner will give us our money back

More like truly “delusional” fans.
This team has shown nothing all season that would give any indication that they would pull it out. With the exception of some great starting pitching for a stretch, the bullpen flat out sucks. If you put the ball on a tee, I doubt anyone would hit over .250. The manager still doesn’t get it. I for one have never seen any originality or passion from Wedge since he was promoted.
Yes, the team narrowly missed the playoff in 2005, but they totally collapsed in the last few weeks of the season, and mostly against the bottom of the barrel teams (Tampa, KC.) This was the first sign that Wedge can’t motivate his teams and keep them focused. Last years collapse in the ALCS was just another example of Wedge’s inability to help his team get over hump.
I won’t argue with you about Wedge…but considering the fact that we’ve been to the playoffs with Wedge as manager along with the fact that the AL Central is uncharacteristically weak this year, no Tribe fan who up until recently thought and/or hoped that we’d have a chance was delusional.
i hate to keep sounding like a wedge apologist, b/c i think it’s probably time for a change of voice in that clubhouse, but to criticize wedge for “lack of passion”, and other qualitative stuff like that is silly. joe torre didn’t exactly show a lot of passion in winning 4 rings in new york…how much passion has phil jackson showed in his career as a coach? the big problem i see with wedge (and the organization) is an unwillingness to shake things up to any larger degree than moving casey blake around in the lineup.
also, let’s remember that the 2005 team WAY overachieved and wilted under their first pressure as professionals for the most part. they were the best team in baseball by a long shot in the second half of that year. it’s also a bit hard to blame wedge for CC and Carmona going in the toilet in last year’s ALCS.
all the same, i say let’s go get willie randolph in the off season. in addition, i want to see a solid 6 weeks of andy marte starting at 3b, guttierez playing one of the outfield spots, michael aubrey and garko rotating at DH, sowers in the rotation…let’s dump bums like dellucci, byrd, blake, etc. and see what this team has.
Yuk, I hate defeat, the white flag does sum it up I guess. But maybe…… I will still cheer on the good plays and will look forward to next year as always.

*sigh* just when I was getting my hopes up for this season….
That about sums it up
Just when things were starting to look up and the bats were coming around….we get swept.
at least no one has run away with the division so theres still a glimmer of hope
Well said.

I think Brian is secretly Eric Wedge posting under a pseudonym.

Terry Pluto is calling it a season. I was soooo close to writing a stick a fork in them post yesterday. It really is kind of depressing.
They were done a month ago. Get over it.
It’s over. Trade C.C., tear down Progressive Field, bring in the bulldozers and turn that field into a parking lot.

hey dan…take it easy man. and just a hint too, it’s still jacob’s field on this site!!!!
Dan may be on to something. If we’re selling, wouldn’t it just be easier if we watched the Aeroes?

The Indians are just an odd-year team, I guess.
odd is right…

What will it take for this team to show Borowski the door? Does he literally have to spit in the face of every Indians fan entering the stadium?
