It wasn’t too long ago that the Ohio State Buckeyes were one of the best teams in the country. Currently, on a four-game losing streak, they are looking to get a win in any way possible as their ranking in the AP Poll continues to fall. Last week, the scarlet and gray were No. 11. With losses at Maryland and Indiana this past week, they have fallen all the way down to No. 21 now, in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, their lowest ranking of the season.
Ohio State’s fall in the rankings has been incredible, to say the least.
One the class of the Big Ten, the Buckeyes are now tied for last in the conference with a 1-4 Big Ten record even though they are still ranked. Joining Ohio State in the top 25 are Michigan State (No. 15), Maryland (17), Michigan (19), and Illinois (24). Looking past just that, Iowa (26), Indiana (29), Penn State (31), Wisconsin (33), Purdue (36), and Rutgers (39) also received votes. As far as the actual rankings go, Gonzaga (30 first-place votes), Baylor (31), Duke (four) Auburn, and Butler round out the top 5. Baylor should be No. 1 though simply because of their resume so far this season if we’re being honest.
Buckeye Nation shouldn’t be in a panic mode quite yet, but the losing skid that features a lack of points and a bunch of turnovers for Ohio State is quite alarming. In fact, Tuesday night’s game against Nebraska is essentially a must-win, not only because the Buckeyes need to get back in the win column but due to it being a home game as well.
Ohio State continues to fall in the AP Poll and ESPN’s latest power rankings. In fact, they are no longer ranked in the power rankings. As far as the KenPom ratings go, the Buckeyes are currently No. 7, with a 109.9 adjusted offensive rating (27th) and 86.6 adjusted defensive rating (9th).
The Dayton Flyers, who are currently 14-2 and had a very impressive start to the season in Maui, are not only the highest-ranked team in Ohio, but are higher ranked than any Big Ten team as well, checking in at No. 13. Holtmann’s old team, the Butler Bulldogs, are No. 5 in the latest poll.
