Just when you thought the Ohio State Buckeyes were only really good on the gridiron, the men’s basketball team wanted to remind you that they are also really, really good. After taking care of business against Kent State and Morgan State combined with many other top-10 teams losing this past week, the basketball Buckeyes have moved up four spots from No. 10 and find themselves as the No. 6-ranked team in the country in the latest Associated Press Top 25.
Even though both Kent State and Morgan State are easy wins, the most important thing is that the scarlet and gray took care of business, something that other teams couldn’t do, which is what’s most important. With North Carolina, Duke, Gonzaga, and Michigan State all losing, Ohio State jumped all four in the rankings, helping their cause along the way. Head coach Chris Holtmann and his staff have the Buckeyes playing really well and the college basketball world has taken notice. The scarlet and gray have excellent guard play, solid (and versatile) wings, and plenty of athleticism, scoring, and rebounding in the paint. It’s a perfect combination.
I have in the past and will continue to say that preseason rankings are somewhat pointless in college athletics and this week is just another example of that. With their dominance this past week, Michigan has gone from unranked to No. 4 in the country while Dayton has gone from not ranked to No. 19. It once again proves that preseason rankings don’t really matter, honestly.
Along with the ACC, the Big Ten has once again proved that they are one of the best conferences in college basketball with four teams ranked in the top-11. Purdue and Penn State are both receiving votes in the poll Joining the Buckeyes are Maryland (No. 3), Michigan (4), and Michigan State (11). Comparatively speaking, the ACC has four teams in the top-11.
Ohio State has a top-10 showdown at North Carolina Wednesday night. The Buckeyes will take on the No. 7 Tar Heels at 9:30 p.m. ET in what will not only be a true test for both teams early in the season but will always be a huge boost for the winner’s resume once March rolls around.
