Fall is my favorite time of the year. The weather is awesome, the leaves are changing, and most importantly, it means football season. While I do love baseball and basketball season (I’m a sports junkie, if you couldn’t tell already), there’s just something about football season that I love so much. The fact that one can watch football legitimately from 12 p.m. to 1-2 a.m. ET on Saturday and then again from 1 p.m. to essentially 11-12 p.m. ET Sunday is so incredibly awesome. What makes it even better is when the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns are doing well. This year, for the first time in a long time, the Browns are actually doing well while the Buckeyes continue to dominate on the gridiron.
That’s part of this reason why this weekend could be a very special one. First, it’s The Game. Then, to close out it, it’s the Browns traveling to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers Sunday afternoon. Does it get much better than this in the regular season? Not really.
To kick things off, it’s The Game Saturday afternoon. The 2019 edition of the greatest rivalry in sports features No. 1 Ohio State and No. 13 Michigan. Whether it’s the Buckeyes’ dominance over the Wolverines over the past (Ohio State has won 15 of the last 17 games between the two including each of the last seven matchups), what’s on the line, the fact that coach’s legacies could very well be determined by their record in The Game, or just the rivalry itself, there’s so much on the line this weekend. Add in that it’s Ryan Day’s first game against Michigan as a head coach and the stakes are that much bigger. We haven’t even talked about the fact that Ohio State is the No. 1-ranked team in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and essentially controls their own destiny once the Playoff is here.
If Saturday wasn’t enough, it’s the Browns-Steelers game in Pittsburgh Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. In case you didn’t think it was much of a rivalry anymore given the fact that Pittsburgh has dominated the series much of the last two decades, well, the game between the two teams that occurred 10 days ago assured us that the rivalry is actually back. We won’t go into the specifics because they have all been talked about enough, but it’s clear that the two teams don’t like one another. I’ll be honest, other than the fact that it’s a rivalry, I haven’t really hated the Steelers all that much simply because Pittsburgh has absolutely dominated the Browns in my lifetime. With what occurred two weekends ago, I found myself hating the Steelers. The rivalry is back, y’all! Add in that the Browns are 5-6, the Steelers are 6-5, and there’s plenty of playoff hopes on the line, and it makes this Sunday’s game that much bigger and better.
So, enjoy spending time with your loved ones and eat all the food you can on Thursday. But don’t forget to rest up for the weekend, because as a Cleveland and Ohio State sports fan, it will be a busy one. It’s rivalry weekend, folks. This time, it’s not just featuring The Game either. We have Ohio State-Michigan and Browns-Steelers in nearly a 24-hour span. Enjoy it, guys.
I hope everyone has a happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving!
