Heisman Watch: Justin Fields checks in at No. 5 after Week 1
September 4, 2019What type of Browns football fan are you?: While We’re Waiting
September 5, 2019One week into the college football season and not much has changed, at least at the top of the Associated Press Top 25. Following the Ohio State Buckeyes taking down Florida Atlantic to open their 2019 season, the scarlet and gray remained at No. 5 in this week’s AP Poll, exactly where they were to start the season. It was expected, especially given that there was only one matchup that featured two ranked opponents going against one another in the opening week of the season.
In fact, after ranked teams went a record-setting 24-1 during Week 1, there was only one change in the entire top 10. Although Florida beat Miami in Week 0, the Gators dropped from No. 8 to No. 11, which therefore moved both Notre Dame (now No. 8) and Texas (9) up a spot. After taking down then-No. 11 Oregon Saturday night, Auburn moved up six spots to No. 10. The rest of the top-10 consists of Clemson (54 first-place votes), Alabama (eight), Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, and Michigan. Following their come-from-behind win over Florida State, Boise State (No. 24) was the only new team to move into the rankings.
Joining Ohio State in the AP Top 25 are six other Big Ten teams: Michigan (No. 7), Penn State (15), Wisconsin (17), Michigan State (19), Iowa (20), and Nebraska (25). The conference’s seven ranked teams are the most in the country. The SEC has six teams in the rankings (the second-most of any conference), four of which are in the top 10.
With the Crimson Tide being ranked No. 2 once again, they set another record. Alabama is ranked in the top-five for the 56th-consecutive week (dating all the week back to November 8, 2015). It breaks a record Miami once held when the Hurricanes were ranked in the top-five for 55 straight weeks (from October 8, 2000 to October 26, 2003.)
Along with their ranking remaining the same in the AP Poll, it also didn’t change in the Coaches Poll, as the Buckeyes came in as the fifth-ranked team in that one as well.
The fifth-ranked Buckeyes take on in-state foe Cincinnati on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
