Is this the offensive turning point for the Tribe?
May 30, 2019What the sale of STO and FSO means for Cleveland sports fans – The Nail in the Coffin, Episode 150
May 31, 2019Happy Friday. Let’s talk about the Browns, but first an announcement! We’ve welcomed another podcast into the fold at WFNY. Much like we brought Tom and Trav under our umbrella because we like The Nail in the Coffin, we’re welcoming in Andy and Jarid, Cleveland and Beyond. It’s a great Cleveland sports podcast that doesn’t try to be anything else. The show is hosted by Andy Billman (Believeland, 30 for 30 director) and Jarid Watson (former military broadcast journalist.) You should go find their podcast on iTunes or wherever and subscribe.
Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. fight with Colin Cowherd, so now what?
We’ve learned so much since the beginning of Hard Knocks last year with the Cleveland Browns. All those stories that we loved watching from week-to-week as HBO followed the Browns around training camp were irrelevant by the time Baker Mayfield came into the Jets game and put his stamp on the season. While being a fan tends to create a short memory, I’m intent on learning my lesson. Most notably, I’m applying the lesson to the ongoing fight between Odell Beckham Jr., Baker Mayfield, and former ESPN’er and current FOX’er Colin Cowherd.
I’m not saying this sideshow shouldn’t entertain you. I’m also not telling you that you shouldn’t be bothered by it. If you think the two highest-profile Browns players should be spending their time doing absolutely anything else, I understand that as well. What we need to recognize together is that none of this has any bearing on the actual football that will be played this season unless Baker Mayfield pounds his fist in a fit of rage and breaks it. In a more extreme and even less likely example, if Odell Beckham Jr. murders Colin Cowherd for talking trash and subsequently goes to jail, that will also negatively impact the Browns’ chances of winning games.
Twitter fights though? Not so much.
Corey Coleman’s shoe collection had about as much impact on last season as this feud will. Devon Cajuste’s crystal collection, Baker Mayfield’s Winnebago, and Bob Wylie’s mustache probably had more of an impact on last year’s football than this Twitter feud will on the 2020 Cleveland Browns.
That’s the lesson I learned from Hard Knocks, that cemented the lesson I learned while obsessing over guys like Armond Smith back in my training camp coverage days. Training camp and the “storylines,” while sometimes entertaining, mean next to nothing when it comes time for the footballs to fly. So, slot the off-season media feud accordingly.
Twitter question of the week…
I love music and I constantly script songs into important moments in the movie of my life. Other than joke responses, what would be the answer to the following?
What song is playing during your funeral scene in the movie of your life?
