The Cleveland Browns continued their busy weekend by claiming five players off waivers. The Browns added defensive tackle Carl Davis, defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo, defensive back Tavierre Thomas, linebacker Tanner Vallejo and center Aaron Neary. To make room for the five new players, the Browns have waived center Austin Reiter, defensive tackle Jamie Meder, defensive end Carl Nassib, linebacker Jermaine Grace and cornerback Jeremiah McKinnon.
Defensive tackle Carl Davis was the Baltimore Ravens’ 2015 third round pick after playing his college football at Iowa. In his three seasons with the Ravens, he has played in 28 games, posting 30 tackles and a half sack. Defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He spent last season on the Vikings’ practice squad. Defensive back Tavierre Thomas was a 2018 undrafted free agent, after playing college football at Ferris State. The Arizona Cardinals signed him as an undrafted free agent following this past year’s draft. Linebacker Tanner Vallejo was drafted in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. In 15 games last season, he had four tackles. Center Aaron Neary was undrafted during the 2016 NFL Draft, after he played his college football at Eastern Washington. He has been with three teams in his career, starting in one game last season with the Los Angeles Rams. But, the Rams decided to waive him on Saturday.
Even though the Browns replaced him by Davis, the dismissal of Jamie Meder is pretty surprising. Meder had been playing well and was listed as one of the team’s starting defensive tackles. He was a player who played his best against the run. But, the Browns obviously thought Davis was an upgrade over Meder. Nassib became expendable after the Browns were able to add Odenigbo.
With these new signings, there is one big focus the Browns seemed to try to address, the interior defensive line. The Browns were obviously not happy with how the interior defensive line was constructed. The additions of Davis and Odenigbo will give the Browns a new look on the defensive line. These two players are likely to be the biggest contributors of the five new players because of the lack of depth at the interior defensive line.
But, don’t get too settled on this 53-man roster. The Browns could still not be done tinkering with the roster. After the waiver claims on Sunday, teams will have to release even more players, which could draw the eye of the Browns.
