The Indians Francisco Mejia is destroying the International League

June 29, 2018Hi everyone. I’m kind of on vacation this week, so it’s a bit shorter and more curt than usual. Hope you all have a lovely Fourth of July next week.
The NBA is an exhibition league now…
The NBA has fans, and they really seem to prefer it that way. Like, fans of the league and its players almost as an exhibition, rather than for teams with city names emblazoned on the front. The vast majority of NBA media that I see on Twitter seems to thrive off the activity and think that it’s just generally good for business. I think it’s a dangerous path to go down in the long run. If these fans don’t care about where players go and if the league takes on a philosophy — at least tacitly — that chides fans for getting mad when players “exercise their free will,” then who will be left to really care about anything?
I generally agree with Bomani Jones on issues, but he has suggested there shouldn’t even be an NBA draft. He’s more concerned about the hundreds of players who should be able to decide which city they get to work. I just find that so hostile to the way I was raised as a sports fan. I’ve made peace with LeBron leaving again, and by the time you’re reading this he might have decided to leave or come back, but I won’t be rooting on LeBron or otherwise enjoying the exhibition he puts on in the playoffs next year in another city’s colors. I will not be angry about it either, but that’s just not how I’m wired as a sports fan.
It would appear that largely I’ve lost that battle with the NBA. Most people seem to agree with exhibitions being the best thing for the league.

Irregardless is a real word…
I won’t be using it, but I listened to a compelling talk yesterday by lexicographer Kory Stamper defending the word and the fluidity of the English language. I wish everyone had heard the talk. It was really interesting. Here’s Kory Stamper talking about how language isn’t black and white. It’s about context and communication first and foremost. I’ll still correct my children’s grammar, of course, but it’s reasonable to consider when making your way through the world to not be so judgemental.
Twitter is for laughs…
You’re welcome.
