2017 Cleveland Indians Positional Previews: Catcher
January 12, 2017Indians agree to deals with Bauer, Otero and McAllister
January 13, 2017The holiday hangover is real, man. I thought once the clock turned over I’d hit my groove, but alas not just yet. Please consider supporting us on Patreon anyway. We’re talking about how to innovate in this year 2017 and Patreon has really let us dream some new dreams for the first time in a long time. Thanks to all those who’ve supported so far. We can’t wait to think of cool new things to do for you this year.
Setting Cleveland Browns priorities…
The Cleveland Browns have to set priorities. Even with an astronomical amount of cap space, you just can’t do everything in one year. That being the case, I think it’s important to talk about what the Browns should do and where they rank in terms of priority.Between Jamie Collins and Terrelle Pryor, I think Jamie Collins is the priority.
Terrelle Pryor had a great season, but… with Terrelle Pryor there’s always a “but” isn’t there? I want the Browns to keep Pryor. I think that he showed he can be a real NFL wide receiver this year with the Browns. That said, I don’t know that he’s a true Number One in this league where Antonio Brown, Julio Jones, and A.J. Green show what that designation really means. Pryor is nice, but he can be eliminated as he was on occasions, even in his breakout season. There’s also the question of character. Pryor had a mini-tiff with Tony Grossi this season. He had major tiffs with defensive backs. It appears that many of the same “look at me” character traits that have dotted Terrelle Pryor’s career are still present to this day.
Jamie Collins isn’t a perfect angel and some of the word about him “freelancing” in New England, thus greasing his exit, are less than desirable. However, Jamie Collins is a higher priority player with a more proven skillset at a more important position. Receiver is undoubtedly important, but that’s a position that can be filled in many rounds of the draft. It feels to me, at least anecdotally, more difficult to find a legit linebacker up and down the draft board. Wide receivers and corners should be achievable all over. Linebackers? A little more difficult.
It would be nice if the Browns kept them both, and did so at reasonable prices. However, I know it might not be achievable to keep them both. If I’m choosing between them, I’m placing a much higher priority on Collins than Pryor.
Highlighting Matt Bowen’s interview with Scott again…
This was really great. I get that Matt Bowen is just one guy with one opinion. I understand there might be guys out there who didn’t enjoy playing for Gregg Williams. Even beyond the glowing opinions, this podcast was chock full of interesting insider info about what it’s like in the NFL. I was particularly interested in how Bowen finds it a bit crazy how we look at head coach hires. You don’t hire a head coach because of a scheme or a specialty. A head coach needs to be a competent leader of men above all. He must set the tone for the whole organization beyond the scope of an owner or some GM. Fascinating stuff.

No (as in, yes, I feel something). That’s why I don’t get “ambivalence.”
So you think the Steelers never have a bounty on Browns QB’s? Ask Colt. I’m not saying it’s moral, but it is fighting fire with fire, not squirt guns.
To the degree that one feels discomfort with what Williams did, I would hope it would inform a feeling of ambivalence around his hiring
Got it. So you mean it’s okay to feel conflicted? Because it sounds like you’re calling for something more defined – conflict resolved in one specific way. But I see what you mean now. Re-reading your first comment, I see what you’re saying. Thanks.

Good to know the Old Testament is still alive and kickin’ π

haha, yahweh off with that one, my friend
So we have to be the Moral Authority? I’m more pragmatic. I’d gladly enjoy a meal at Edwins.

Bringing in good coaches who are decent human beings would be ideal, right?
you’re teambuilding ideas are pure fantasy
I’ve said the same. As a non-OSU fan, I’m baffled by the way people talk about Pryor.
I bring this up all the time. Entering the ’09 season, Belichick traded Richard Seymour (1yr left on his contract) to the Raiders. Applause. Genius.
Playoffs come. Ravens run all over the Pats. Just own the Pats defensive line. Flacco threw for like 40 yards. Tell me Seymour wasn’t missed.
So yeah, Belichick is the best, but he’s not perfect.

hi DUSTYN … welcome to the board. and you came in with a bang.
hi PETE … i think Collins is worth it. not only because he is a real pro-bowl talent , but more importantly , to show the fans & other potential free-agents that the Browns are for real.
i miss Marty …
Agreed. Very much so. People advocate consistency for coaches and the front office, but what about the personnel? Which isn’t to say you need to bring back every player. But it seems to me that the development of guys like Kessler, Johnson, and Coleman would be helped a great deal with Pryor on the roster. Last thing we need is another hole filled by some new guy who isn’t up to speed.
I know the team can’t make Pryor sign a deal here. That said, I’ll be extremely disappointed if they can’t make something happen. There’s no reason that we shouldn’t be offering the best deal in terms of dollars and cents.
It’s funny, folks complain about Browns fans and scarlet-tinted glasses when it comes to Michigan players (which I think is mostly fiction), but I actually think that Pryor continues to receive the real brunt of it. I think there is a big population of Browns fans (and reporters) who love the Buckeyes and have not been able to forgive Pryor for trading his own property for tattoos and what the NCAA decided to do to the OSU program as a result. Which, if they’re honest, they would (1) direct their ire at the NCAA, and (2) realize that Pryor gave OSU Urban Meyer.

Absolutely agree. With Pryor, it’s especially weird because (1) he has been in the NFL since 2011 during which time (as far as I can tell) he hasn’t caused any drama (outside of the piddly stuff you covered) and (2) he willingly switched positions because he knew it was the only way to stay in the league, which is something plenty of other guys refused to do. Yet somehow, he’s the egotistical drama queen and Tim Tebow is the guy you’d want your daughter to bring home.
Well, I happen to really like both Tebow and Pryor, but, point well taken.
Dang, son. That’s cold.
Looks like one of those spots where the writers may have been up a little too late working up against deadlines or something…maybe having a couple of extra wines….maybe sucking back on grandpa’s cough medicine.
Yeah this certainly grew further than I thought it would. We have deep morality discussion, Bible passages, name calling, and of course the amazing snark that I love about this site. I’ve been reading WFNY daily for about 4 years…. not sure why I chose today to comment, but here we are, haha.
I like Tebow too, actually, though his “All-American boy” shtick seems a bit of an act at times. Not that I fault him for it. Oddly, like Pryor, Tebow seems to get an unfair amount of hate, albeit from a different section of sports fans.
If you think this is a “deep morality discussion” that may explain a lot…

From the few quarters of the Browns that I watched this year, it seemed like his best attribute was speed . I saw a few missed tackles one on one. And a lot of pressuring the wrong side of the blocker while trying to make an impact play. There is a reason BB threw us the keys to a starting linebacker. I would try to keep him, but in the 15th to 20th highest paid linebacker range. Definitely not top five.
