Let’s Argue: The Indians Long Term Catcher Decision
January 17, 20172017: The Year of Anniversaries
January 17, 2017Despite calls for stability and continuity by ownership, the Cleveland Browns fired Ray Horton Jr. and much of his defensive staff to put Gregg Williams in charge. Whether or not you worry about his Bountygate past, he has former players who laud his style and his schemes are known to make the most of players on whatever roster he has directed.
Williams can still get more out of a defense given more talent, so there are some who believe the Browns should oblige with giving him multiple starters from this defensive talent-rich draft class. One of those people is Rob Rang at CBS, who has the Browns selecting two defensive players in the first round of his latest 2017 NFL mock draft.
No. 1 DE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
Count Rang among the legions who watch Garrett play the game of football and realize that he is a special, special talent that even a team in need of a quarterback cannot pass up. Of course, it helps that no quarterback has separated themselves into the Andrew Luck category of “must-pick” players. A dominant defensive end who can be used standing up or with a hand on the ground. Someone who has the speed to create havoc in a way that everyone watching JaDaveon Clowney in the playoffs has drooled over the prospects of having on their team. Rang also notes the absence of such a player currently on the Browns roster. Williams has to be quite happy with the opportunity of adding such a key defensive piece immediately upon his arrival.
No. 12 CB Teez Tabor, Florida
Top 10 talent, 10 cent head. Those six words sum up the scouting profile on Tabor as well as any others. The 6-foot, 210 pound, rangy cornerback dominated on the field — when he was not suspended. Tabor has the physicality and aggressiveness to take wide receivers out of the play at the line of scrimmage — when he isn’t getting into tussling matches that mirror wrestling matches with them before and after the whistle. He can use his physical nature to do well tackling to support the run defense — when his aggressiveness doesn’t have him taking too many risks in angles or going for big hits. He has a great knowledge for the game that allows him to make big plays — when that knowledge combined with his aggressiveness isn’t detriment causing him to be too risky in his style or abandon his zone concepts.
Off the field, Tabor was suspended for Week 1 in 2016 for Florida for “behavior that is not acceptable.” Similarly, he was suspended in September of 2015 for refusing to take a drug test. Tabor’s issues might stem from problems he had going to high school in a troublesome part of Washington D.C. where he lost two friends to shootings and was jumped on at least two occasions himself.
He will be one of the more controversial picks in the upcoming 2017 NFL Draft. He has the size, talent, and knowledge. The question is if his overly aggressive nature or brashness (on and off the field) will allow him to show it. An interesting pick to mock to the Browns at least due to their proclivity in 2016 to gear towards the players with less character red flags.
Some of the players on the board at 12:
- Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer
- Michigan linebacker-safety Jabrill Peppers
- Stanford edge rusher Solomon Thomas
- Alabama offensive tackle Cam Robinson

Garrett at 1 is great, no argument here… Tabor at 12 is a great talent and good value/fit. Unfortunately we are too weak of a team right now to be entertaining risky off field players that high. Now, if he were there at 33, I think the value would be too great to pass on especially considering how weak our DBs were in 2016. But at 12, we need a foundation piece. Cannot have cracks in the foundation pieces. Alas, we should look elsewhere.
Besides, this is a great CB draft. No need to go that route at 12 unless we are getting a top 5 overall player. We can wait tl day 2 and still get a starting caliber guy.
