Poor Boston: Cavs vs Celtics, Behind the Box Score
November 4, 2016The Illustrated Man knew the 2016 Cleveland Indians’ fate
November 4, 2016Good Friday morning to you guys. It’s been a long run of playoff baseball and, damn, I’m kind of excited to have some time off, despite the sad outcome to the World Series. I’m beat and could really use a vacation from real sports for a minute. Thankfully, the Browns don’t count this year. So other than a link to a podcast episode, I’m going to shy away from Cleveland sports in this week’s WWW. Hope you enjoy a little break.
Starship Troopers reboot!
I largely dislike the constant re-use of older material in Hollywood. Whether we’re talking about another Batman or Spider-Man, or even changing the sex of the Ghostbusters, Hollywood seems to struggle mightily with originality the way any of its heroes match up with various baddies. HOWEVER, when you’re talking about going back to the original novel and rebooting Starship Troopers with a new cast and with a new script, I’m on board.
Starship Troopers isn’t a good movie, but it’s culty fun. It’s sci-fi action with a small dose of horror and much like The Purge, I’d watch a movie in this genre once every year or so, regardless of acting quality. That’s the kind of shlocky serialized movie-making that I can easily get behind.
Plus, as Brian Spaeth and I have talked about time and again with regard to movies and remakes, if a movie can benefit from advances in technology, then that’s a bonus in the “pro” column. That’s clearly the case with Starship Troopers. I can’t wait to see it, and I hope it’s good enough to give us a sequel per year for a few years.
Wonder Woman trailer!
Talking World Series, Cleveland and NFL popularity with Martin Rickman…
I wanted to talk about the Indians World Series loss to the Chicago Cubs on the podcast and I reached out to two people so far. One of those is our good buddy TD who will probably be on soon. The other was Martin Rickman of UPROXX sports who’s forged one of the more interesting careers in sports media over the past five years. We discussed a bunch of cool topics in addition to the Indians’ heroic efforts to win the World Series with a severely compromised roster.

That’s it from me this week. Have a great weekend and try and enjoy some Corey Coleman vs. Ezekiel Elliott on Sunday.

Casper Van Dien is quite possibly the worst actor ever.
Upvote on behalf of Keanu Reeves.
For me, Michael Ironside’s character and lines carried that movie. Without him, every sequel went straight to video.
the greatest line of Michael Ironside’s career was “Get your butts above the hard deck and return to base immediately” (different movie but still)
Starship Troopers is the single greatest science fiction novel ever written (though it’s really more political commentary than anything else). Everyone should read it.
Starship Troopers is the single worst movie ever created (for the reason cited above).
If they’re going to re-boot the film and base it off of the novel, then huzzah! I look forward to it.
As for sequels? http://replygif.net/i/326.gif
The novel is not a novel for sequels; neither should any movie be. If the intent is to make a sequel-ripe film, then they just shouldn’t do it.
Not that I have a strong opinion about this book, or anything . . .
You’re too late. There have already been a Part 2, AND 3.
So, no Nebraska preview this week?
Not for the re-boot. If they’re going to re-boot it, they should just do the book. No sequels.
Where’s the fun in that?
You have to have Starship Troopers 2: Revenge of the Bugs, Starship Troopers 3: Christmas Special, Starship Troopers 4; Zombugs!, Starship Troopers 5: Browns Win The Super Bowl.
Have I mentioned how much I hate that movie?
Starship Toopers is one of my favorite hokey sci-fi movies.
Didn’t read the book because of the movie (which was dumb but fun – I’m sure I would have hated had I read the book first based on this description though).
Only thing worse than using a book title to sell a different movie is attempting to follow the book but completely missing out on the overall thesis — see: Ender’s Game (which is why I assume the sequels have been killed off).
The who now? (they are in the pipeline)
Please read it. You will not regret it. The first chapter alone, seriously, will blow your mind.
” I have only one rule. Everybody fights, no one quits. If you don’t do your job, I’ll kill you myself! Welcome to the Roughnecks!” (I’d link a video by my stupid company now blocks YouTube).
I do enjoy a good Sci Fi read, so I’ll look into it.
Excuse me, but I did not say “look into it.” I said “read it.” Sure, I said “please,” and that was my mistake. Take this as an order, trooper.
It’s actually a fairly short book, and it will be a labor of love. I promise. But what am I doing trying to cajole you? It’s an order. Read the book. Do it now.
If you disassociate it from the book, it’s not a half-bad gory sci-fi romp.
What? An order means I am much less willing to go and read it. I’m a rebel like that. The only problem is that I already found the PDF for free online and started reading it. Dangiit. Too late to rebel.

No, I can understand that. I just love the book so much that I can’t disassociate the two.
The major problem for me is that the creator of the movie proudly admitted that he never read the book, hates the philosophy behind it (though he never read it, and though there is not an actually clear philosophy), and hinted that the movie is intended to be a satire of the book.
Another cool thing: The primary ship in the novel, the Rodger Young, is named after a soldier that received the Medal of Honor for actions in the Pacific during WW2. He was a member of the 148th Infantry (still a unit in the Ohio Army National Guard – I know it well), which was part of a division known as the “Buckeye Division,” or the “Ohio Buckeyes.”
Anyhow . . . I hope you enjoy it. It’s admittedly not for everyone’s taste.
already enjoy learning WHY the pilots were decidedly female in the movie (though they never mentioned it)
I’ve seen it live many times……

You expect me to read? A book?
I have the video game on the way…

The content is oddly low on football content this week.
Kessler is starting Sunday.
Jeeeze, who’s running this place?
Friday night games for the B1G? Really?
Those are for the MAC, and the Sun Belt, and maybe Rutgers, or Maryland.
C’mon SUoO. Don’t do it!
As if that’s news for you. Can’t let Josh threaten the 0-16 death march.
This is pathetic for a Friday.
No polka, no frozen portapottys.
Ugh.
Against the Cowboys? There is no threat on earth of that death march concluding this week!
The city is oddly low on football content every week.
That’s because Michael Ironside’s character is about the only one that reflects what the book was like.
One of the most interesting concepts from the novel was the whole idea that franchise is not a right, it’s something earned. You had to serve in the military and be a veteran to vote and run for office. I don’t agree with it, but they made some pretty interesting arguments. Looking at the election today, you wonder whether Heinlein was right.
There was this sort of large event that sort of took attention away from football. We’ll be back to our normal schedule next week.
Browns > Indians

I’ll tell you what…if the Browns have actually won a game in the season the next time the Indians are in the World Series, then I’ll make sure to write at least on article on them.

Skin in the game. It’s clearly not what underlies our system, but it’s a fascinating concept. My favorite part of Heinlein’s idea is that everyone can serve, regardless of ability or disability, etc. They will find something that you can do, and it will count the same as everyone else’s service.
Yes, that’s true. And you can continue to serve even after you’re injured. The idea of mandatory public service, if not explicitly military service, is pretty interesting. It seems like in a lot of cases we vote for people to serve us who have not served anyone in particular. And the fact that we don’t even hold people to a requirement like that, is interesting in itself.
It’s an interesting idea. Our government was built explicitly with the notion that civilians should be in charge of the military in order to avoid the wars that the military class would otherwise pursue and seek. But with war being what it is today, the military class is the least likely to seek out another war. For civilians (at least those in the business of gaining and consolidating personal power), war is just another power game played at others’ expense. Definitely not true for the 1% that has been there.
That just got political (but DEFINITELY not partisan). Sorry. I’m done.

nailed it. though you must be momentarily forgetting about Dune, which truly is the greatest sci-fi book and likely the worst movie ever.
Israel (and, to an extent, Russia).
Except in Starship Troopers, the force is entirely voluntary. Israel (and South Korea – a better analog than Russia) employ compulsory service. For the franchise model of ST to work, it must be voluntary. In that way, it harkens back more to Republican Rome (and to some extent, Imperial Rome).
