Kevin Durant is glad Warriors blew 3-1 lead
October 12, 2016Kyrie Irving and the Potential for More
October 12, 2016So far in 2016, the Cleveland Browns quarterback situation has been different every week—literally. Five weeks into the season, they have used five different players at quarterback: Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, Cody Kessler, Charlie Whitehurst, and Terrelle Pryor. With Pryor as their best wide receiver so far this season and untouchable in trade talks, the team would likely prefer not to use him behind center. Heading into Week 6, it looks as though the Browns could have two of their quarterbacks available, who were previously injured: veteran Josh McCown and rookie Cody Kessler in addition to this week’s practice squad call-up in Kevin Hogan.
McCown, who went down with a broken left collarbone on September 18, said following Tuesday’s practice that he will get back to practice on Wednesday and hopes to be ready to play this weekend, ahead of the team’s Week 6 matchup at the Tennessee Titans. Before literally putting it all on the line for his team and finishing a game even though he had a broken collarbone, the 37-year-old has completed 20-of-33 pass attempts for 260 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Kessler, who wasn’t expected to play much in the first season in the NFL, has done well so far following all the injuries already. In three games (all starts), the rookie has completed 54-of-81 pass attempts (66.7 percent) for 529 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The 23-year-old has already shown plenty of promise but has also had a handful of rookie mistakes as well, which is expected given the fact that it’s his first season in the NFL.
During the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots, Kessler was forced to leave the game in the first quarter following a crushing hit from linebacker Dont’a Hightower. The hit resulted in what was diagnosed as bruised ribs for the quarterback.
Prior to the hit, the rook has already earned plenty of respect from around the locker room, per clevelandbrowns.com’s Patrick Maks:
Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins: “I’ve been singing his praises since he has been in there. I think we have consistently moved the football since Cody has taken over. That’s tough to do as a rookie who was a third-round quarterback and third in the depth chart three weeks ago.”
Tight end Gary Barnidge: “We’ve seen how he can do in practices and stuff. We know what he can do, and he’s just going out there and showing it on the field. He is showing everybody else what he can do, and we are excited about that.”
Center John Greco: “I know he is going to do everything he can to get out there. We just have to do everything we can to keep him clean. That was an unfortunate thing to happen to him, but I know he is going to want to be out there. He is a competitor. He loves playing with us, and we love playing for him. It is going to be something that we just want to make sure he is capable of being out there healthy, 100 percent so we can get this offense going again.”
If the Browns are truly tanking (or are they?), they should start Kessler if both are truly healthy. McCown would not only be a great mentor, but at 37, his career is lucky to be over soon. The more game reps the rookie gets, the better he will get. McCown doesn’t like all the tanking talk, but realizes that if the Browns are truly doing that, he will do whatever is needed.

What’s the word on Coleman?
As for QBs, I think I’d actually like to see McCown back in there. McCown gives the best chance for Pryor and the other WRs to continue their development, and frankly doesn’t much increase our chances of winning. That said, I would love to see them pick up a couple of wins really soon, if for no other reason than reward for strong effort all year and to help the culture of the team – and McCown likely does present the best chance of that happening, at least marginally.
I’m not so sure about the development being best with McCown. There’s positives for either McCown or Kessler (if either are anywhere near “healthy:).
McCown Pro: Deeper WR routes will get stronger throws and he generally understands how to read a defense to not get his guys killed.
Kessler Pro: Much, much, much better about getting the ball out quickly on the timing routes. Better accuracy for his range of throws (short-to-midrange).
Agree with all of that. My reasoning: The WRs have now had 3 weeks of development on the short to mid-range game (and I think they’re doing pretty well). It’s time for them to work on the deeper routes – which might bring out some of the skills from rookies that we haven’t yet seen.
Obviously, this is a huge oversimplification of the game and the issues the Browns face, but it’s a starting point for me.
Of course, I also like what I’ve been able to see from Kessler thus far. If keeping him in lets him develop a deep passing game, then I’m 100% all for that.
Kessler should be playing , whether we’re tanking or not … if he can play really well the rest of the way , QB may not have to be addressed with our first pick next year.
i guess that is the question : do we take a stud QB with one of our first 2 picks next year , even if Kessler does play well ??
Bitonio is now out, possibly for an extended period of time.
Does this justify the gif?
I was just about to post this and make sure someone gets eyes on Bode before he can make it to the 480 bridge (we have plenty of time – it will take a while to get there from Texas)
I had a similar thought. Good thing there are no bridges in Texas!
Anyone have eyes-on?

NO! The dream of 6 different QBs in 6 games needs to be alive!
No. never, ever do I want to forego drafting a QB because of Kessler.
hi BEN … it would be nice to take the best defensive player in next year’s draft with our first 1st-round pick … and i’m okay if we end-up with Watson , Kizer or Kelly if they end-up being worthy of that pick.
I think an arm transplant could help him develop a deep passing game.
dammit , Hue … let Cody throw deep this game … and more than once. we need to show BEN what he’s got …
i think he would rather be taking a severe beating playing QB for the Browns than sitting at home …
He got a nice injury settlement from the Browns, so I doubt it.
a gazillion upticks. What it means is that we might not have to START that QB right away next year.
he’s no Tebow.
Isaiah Crowell had a poor game against the Pats , but is still on pace for 1,331 yards & 10 td’s & is still sporting a fine 5.6 ypc.
team ranks :
total offense – 17th
rush offense – 5th
pass offense – 22nd
total defense – 30th
rush defense – 22nd
pass defense – 26th
* the defense has given-up 30+ points in 3 straight games & is on pace to give up the most points in TEAM HISTORY … not good.
