2016-17 Cleveland Cavaliers Season Preview
October 3, 2016The Stunning Return of Yan Gomes: Cleveland’s Spirit Yanimal
October 3, 2016What a final day of the regular season it was in the MLB. With all games starting at 3 p.m. EST, there was plenty on the line for a handful of teams around the league. Whether it was trying to be one of the two wild card teams in both the American League and National League or clinching home field advantage in the ALDS for teams who had already won their respective divisions, there was plenty of scoreboard watching across the MLB.
With the Cleveland Indians, who had already won the AL Central division, beating the Kansas City Royals Sunday afternoon along with the Boston Red Sox, who had already won the AL East, losing to the Toronto Blue Jays, the Indians secured home field advantage in their ALDS matchup against the Red Sox, which begins Thursday. Due to the fact that Toronto beat Boston on Sunday, Cleveland will not have to travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers in a makeup game Monday afternoon. They will instead finish the regular season having played just 161 games rather than the usual 162. The Indians finished the regular season with a 94-67 record, which was second-best in the American League and third-best in the MLB.
Here is the entire schedule for the best-of-five game series between the Indians and Red Sox1:
- Game 1: Thursday, October 6 at Cleveland
- Game 2: Friday, October 7 at Cleveland
- Game 3: Sunday October 9 at Boston
- *Game 4: Monday, October 10 at Boston
- *Game 5: Wednesday, October 12 at Cleveland
*Will only be played if necessary
With Indians’ ace Corey Kluber still recovering from a quad strain, he is expected to start Game 2 instead of Game 1. The pitching matchups for the first two games of the series have been set, with Josh Tomlin set to start Game 3 for Cleveland:
- Game 1: Trevor Bauer (12-8, 4.26 ERA) vs. Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15 ERA)
- Game 2: Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14 ERA) vs. David Price (17-9, 4.04 ERA)
For what it’s worth, Cleveland was 2-4 against Boston in the regular season, including 1-2 at Progressive Field. But remember, not only did the Indians host the Red Sox in their first home series of the season and plenty of things have changed since then, but anything can happen in the MLB playoffs.
Some Indians players took to Twitter to express their excitement about having home field advantage in the ALDS:

*because Atlanta beat Detroit, the game today is unnecessary. GO TRIBE!
The Braves in a very Brownsian way hurt themselves the last week by moving from the 2nd overall pick to I think 5th?
Actually, it wasn’t just Atlanta. The stars really had to line up to scrub todays game:
Toronto beat Boston
Orioles beat Yankees
Indians beat KC
Atlanta beat Detroit
When are game times released? I haven’t been able to find anything.
Likely not until the WC games are played.

Right. Was just correcting the article. Toronto beating Boston was noted as the reason why #162 didn’t have to be played.
Just trying to be smart and look like I’m paying attention
