Fan-friendly Clevland Indians schedule slated for 2017
September 14, 2016Stop With The Clichés, Cleveland
September 14, 2016Only a week into the NFL season, there has been plenty of talk surrounding the Cleveland Browns. Whether it’s the question of if they’re tanking, quarterback Robert Griffin III’s shoulder injury that could possibly end his season, or just how bad the team really is this season, they have been in the limelight already.
With Josh McCown taking over the starting quarterback duties for at least the next few weeks, he sounded off on all of the tanking talk during the latest PFT Live, per Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith.
“For us to just sit back and say, ‘Yeah, this is the year that we’re gonna tank’ and all that, for a player that’s not our mindset at all and that’s not our expectation, and it fires me up when people say that. It fires me up and makes this task even greater. We embrace the opportunity to go out there and maybe do something that people don’t think we can do.”
While McCown has been a below-average quarterback throughout his career, the 37-year-old has been on plenty of teams around the league and knows how it feels to be both in the cellar of the league and with good teams as well. With the 2016 Browns, he, along with the few veterans on the team, hope that they can be part of the turnaround for Cleveland, one that has been in the works since their return in 1999. Obviously, to make that rebuilding process faster, the worse record the Browns have, the higher the draft pick(s) they will have, which then turns into them being able to select better players. But McCown has once again stated that the team is playing to not only be competitive but to win now, not to win in 2017 and beyond.
“For me and the other veterans on this team, a Hall of Famer like Joe Thomas, that can’t and won’t be the mindset. Our mindset is to compete and play to win football games. The rest of that is down the road, but our mindset is to compete.”
Now the Browns starting quarterback—again, the gunslinger has proven that he can at least be a decent veteran QB for the team that has just few veterans. In his first season in Cleveland in 2015, McCown completed 186-of-292 (63.7 percent) of his passes for 2.109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions while leading the Browns to a 1-7 record in his starts.
Looking to prove that the Browns aren’t tanking, McCown’s first start in 2016 will come against the Baltimore Ravens in the home opener Sunday afternoon. Last season, he was 1-1 against the Ravens while completing 57-of-89 passes for 669 yards and three touchdowns, which turned into a 98.0 quarterback rating.
McCown may say the Browns aren’t tanking in 2016, but at this points, it appears to be nothing more than a matter of semantics.

Josh McCown is like the human version of the DJ3000, capable of effortlessly spitting out the right cliche at the right moment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC3W1BiUjp0
YAS. Screw tanking, let’s go win one for the Paul Brown’r! No not that one, the non-Cincinnati Bengals version.

Right. You mean the one that Paul Brown coached. The one in Baltimore.
I tried really hard to find the Simpsons clip where Lisa tries to help Homer and Apu understand the difference between Indian-Americans and American-Indians/Native Americans. It would have been perfect and glorious to match Humboldt’s comment. Dang it.
It feels like there are happy little elves who scamper around the internet uploading random Simpsons clips to YouTube. Sometimes you find the right esoteric clip for the right moment, and other times you don’t

“We’re not tanking, we’re just really, really bad.”

I can just see a helicopter spin happening now.
Reminds me of one of my favorite all-time Simpsons moments. I found this to be a humorous antidote during the fervor over the Confederate flag last summer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q–iGgtRn8

No, sir. Just a man–a man neglecting his work duties by reading up on sports* (and now also watching numerous Simpsons clips).
*we are still considering this what the Browns do, right?

Love it. We’re obsessed with boiling down all of our conflicts to single black-and-white statements. This world is pretty gray.
I also think gray is pretty. So is grey.
“We spellz it with an a in ‘dis country, boy”
Must be from Michigan, where they spell yellow “maize.” Carpet bagger.
Did I just admit to being an Anglophile? Let’s go watch some Downton Abbey over cups of earl grey tea. And I’m not joking, let’s make it happen… I missed season 6.
Amen. Actually, the process of discussing the issue online caused me to confront the extreme left in a semi-adversarial way, which was new territory. Ultimately, I found it a fascinating exercise in self-reflection about the tone and ideological rigidity I bring to these sorts of morally ambiguous debates. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m going to hold back in inevitable future disagreements, Gary, but I’ll promise to place a premium on civility 🙂
This is the hidden beauty, the silver lining, of the current political climate. I am ready to fight everyone, and in course, don’t really feel like fighting at all.
We might actually be headed toward a more civil body politic.
Once we wipe out all of the extremists on both sides, of course.

A propos to this thread, I saw that The Simpsons was just (arbitrarily) ranked as the best TV show of all time: https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/sep/07/the-simpsons-greatest-tv-show-of-all-time
There’s something we can all rally around in this time of political upheaval and stultifying Browns ineptitude
