Sashi Brown says Browns’ Big Board is set, team knows who they’ll be taking
April 26, 2016C-Cap Recap: A Cody Code Red
April 27, 2016Sitting with the No. 8 pick (after trading down from the No. 2 pick with the Eagles) in a draft with seven Tier-1 players (plus Carson Wentz) according to Joe Gilbert’s Big Board, the Cleveland Browns should be in a good position to add a needed building block for the team. As Thursday’s 2016 NFL Draft is nearly upon us, MMQB’s Peter King believes the Browns will select Notre Dame offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley at No. 8 in his latest mock draft.
8. Cleveland: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame. Browns would love to trade for even more value for this pick. Lots of buzz that coach Hue Jackson likes Paxton Lynch and is advocating for the Memphis quarterback, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a trade down (maybe for a team to move up for Myles Jack or Eli Apple), with Cleveland ending up with an extra second-round pick in a draft packed with second-round and third-round value. But Stanley looks like very good value here as the eventual heir to Joe Thomas. Who knows? If the Browns get a great offer for Thomas, maybe that heir thing will happen this year.
Though Ronnie Stanley is not a Tier-1 player according to Gilbert’s Big Board, he would replace the departed Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle or possibly allow the team to trade future Hall of Fame left tackle Joe Thomas. But, allowing Schwartz to leave just to replace him with the No. 8 pick would frustrate many fans due to the Browns obvious need for playmakers on the team. Peter King defended his selection to one of those fans on Twitter.
Yeah. They’ve done so well picking other positions in the 1st round.
One OL in top 10 of last 10 drafts:

An even bigger surprise came later in King’s mock first round, where he has the Browns trading back into the first round (from No. 32) and taking Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch at No. 26.
26. Cleveland: Paxton Lynch, QB, Memphis. If Seattle stays, I’d forecast Alabama center Ryan Kelly or Texas A&M tackle Germain Ifedi. But trading up assures the Browns of getting the quarterback who fascinates coach Hue Jackson. Lynch will need at least a year of seasoning, which is fine with Cleveland because they want to get it right and will wait if need be. The Browns may consider a bigger trade somewhere in the round if they think Lynch is garnering significant interest and may be picked sooner.
Do the Browns need a franchise quarterback? Absolutely. But, previous regimes have traded back into the first round for what they thought was their quarterback, none of which are starting in the NFL. But I mean, fourth time is the charm, right?
Given his past experience with developing quarterbacks, if head coach Hue Jackson believes Lynch is his guy (and his diamond in the rough), go for it, Browns. Give the new head coach his guy, and it will allow Lynch to develop for at least one season on the sidelines while Robert Griffin III is behind center. But, here’s hoping that if they do in fact trade back into the late first round for a quarterback, that gunslinger is given time to develop into a good NFL quarterback.

who ???? …
Crow often shows blind-like tendencies as he runs into a blocker.
tunsil’s blocking assignments and their scheme was primitive at best. He hung out with the supreme knucklehead, Nkeideche (sic). Frankly I think the kid from ND or Conklin will be better. Decker even possibly.
But, Crow wasn’t drafted, so technically he doesn’t count.
Not to antagonize, it’s quite possible the Browns don’t take a QB for another two years. I think they want the team as close to built as possible before taking the QB.
it’s possible , but i see chad kelly & d.watson coming out next year & there we sit with two 1st round picks.
Right. It’s probable for sure. I think the emphasis on long-term sustainability and trying to align optimal cap space and player effectiveness yields itself to waiting on the QB. People by and large assume that getting the QB ASAP is the lone methodology.
Doesn’t mean that they have to take a QB this year, though.
Technical schmechnical.
I’m with you. I think a lot of people are falling for the idea that because the Browns desperately need a QB that they need to take one in this draft to fix the problem. As such, it’s easy for folks to see how this draft is going to be a failure, irrespective of what happens, simply because we can’t get one of the best 2 QBs in this draft. I just don’t see it that way. If the Browns don’t have a QB in this draft that they really want, they’re not going to take one – but I would guess that they will position themselves to get the one they want next year (even if Hue somehow works magic and puts us out of the running for the #1 pick). I’m just not worried about QB right now. Like, at all.
Look at Indy. They have Luck, and will soon be paying him a HUGE amount (if he doesnt revolt and demand out). They are done, cap wise.
Great example.
(Pipe dreaming: What if he’s the guy we somehow end up getting, after building the team? That would be so perfect, and a firm signal to me that the curse has ended. Of course, I’m still hopeful that RG3 might be that guy. Not banking on it, but hopeful.)
I’m not ready to just disregard RG3 as a viable starter.
A trade back will also give the owner a reason to fire everyone after 2 years.
unless you prefer Ramsey or Bosa…some are big on Elliot. I think Joe did a great job identifying his Tier-1. any of those guys are fine and the closeness of their grades could cause team’s to use those character flags (or medical) to grade a bit more sharply between them (need a tiebreaker).
I imagined hearing it in the Iron Sheik’s voice.
Now using the most valuable player theory, ie the best possible pick for the Browns, I expect Ozzie to take Zeke at 6.
So, we’re using the Shel Silverstein draft strategy. He wrote a story about a kid whose Dad gave him a dollar, and he traded that dollar for two quarters because two is more than one. The he traded the two quarters for three dimes because three is more than two. Then he traded his three dimes for 4 nickels because four is more than three. Finally he traded his 4 nickels for 5 pennies, because 5 is more than 4.
The kids Dad probably whooped his behind. I hope we dont end up calling Ozzie Newsome “Daddy” yet again.

yes. they actually have more than 3 guys on the roster who play the QB position, so they’ll be able to line up a starting 11 on offense even without drafting a QB. No rush to get that guy (especially if it’s Lynch) with two viable options coming out next year.
i think everyone is forgetting that he is on the team. Not saying he is a pro-bowler but he can still play if healthy. and so can McCown. QB will not be their Achilles heel.
Had a vivid dream last night, hand to god, that I was reading the news this morning and the Browns had traded down to 15 for a future first rounder and 2 second rounders. Absurdly optimistic haul, but it was a dream.
I completely feel this way in retrospect, but if I’m honest with myself, I thought both could be good at the moment they were drafted. More because I’m an optimist. Don’t worry, I’m getting smarter and will only ever be surprised again if a player turns out to be good.

Agreed, Manziel won the Heisman and Weeden was a win at Iowa State away from taking OSU to a national championship game. Were there concerns with both players? Of course. But it wasn’t like the Browns pulled Paul Blake (Necessary Roughness reference) off his farm to line up behind center.
