LeBron James: “It’s a perfect time to be clicking”
April 7, 2016Rogue One, Cavs flip the switch, and Bad Books: While We’re Waiting…
April 8, 2016With the NFL Draft less than three weeks away, mock draft season is in full force. In his fourth mock draft this year, ESPN’s Mel Kiper has the Cleveland Browns taking North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz with the second-overall pick, just like he did in his second and third mock drafts.
From his post on ESPN.com:
2. Cleveland Browns
Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State
He’s not the top QB on my board, but this isn’t a prospect ranking, it’s a projection. The addition of Robert Griffin III does provide some added developmental insurance here so they don’t have to start a rookie, and it also gives them a chance to wait on a QB pick if they really like one of the guys who could be around in Round 2.
Although the Browns signed Robert Griffin III, Kiper did not change his mind. While he believes that the team could look elsewhere now that they have RG3, he also thinks that the former Washington QB will help develop the rookie and allow them to stand and learn on the sidelines and not be thrown in the ring right away. That rings especially true in Cleveland in light of Colt McCoy’s revelations about having to play so early in his career.
After displaying impressive measurables at the NFL Combine, Carson Wentz unsurprisingly also did well at his Pro Day. In fact, due to the weather, Browns head coach Hue Jackson was the only head coach in attendance at North Dakota State where they squirted the ball and made life difficult for the presumptive draft pick.
In addition to Wentz and the Browns, Buckeyes fans will be interested to know that Kiper has six former Ohio State Buckeyes in the first round: Joey Bosa at No. 4 (Dallas Cowboys), Ezekiel Elliott at No. 6 (Ravens), Darron Lee at No. 13 (Dolphins), Taylor Decker at No. 18 (Colts), Eli Apple at No. 26 (Seahawks), and Vonn Bell at No. 28 (Chiefs). Michael Thomas, Braxton Miller, Adolphus Washington, and Joshua Perry are all listed as “prospects in play in the second round”.
California quarterback Jared Goff, who has also been widely linked to the Browns No. 2 pick, is pegged to go to the San Francisco 49ers at No. 7.

Elliott to the Ravens. Please, Lord, no.
In fact, I’ll go so far as to say: “If there is a God, it can be proven by making sure Zeke doesn’t end up in Baltimore.”
i wonder what would happen on this board if we took Elliott at #2 , or traded down & took him ???
Why is it so hard to use the singular male pronoun when referring to a man so people know what the hell you’re talking about?
and i still don’t buy the “rookie QB’s should sit & learn” bit … mariotta , d.carr , bortles , winston , luck , bridgewater , newton , r.wilson and even RGIII all played right away in their rookie seasons.
are you going to learn more on the bench with a clipboard in your hand , or by experiencing the actual speed of the nfl game by actually playing ??
even if we take wentz or goff at #2 , there should still be a QB competition … i would think RGIII would still have to beat these guys out to be the starter. the best QB should play … even if it’s a rookie.
which of these draft scenarios (first 3 picks) tickles your fancy :
scenario 1 – QB goff , WR doctson , S neal
scenario 2 – QB wentz , WR doctson , S neal
scenario 3 – FS ramsey , QB lynch , WR b.miller
scenario 4 – FS ramsey , WR doctson , QB c.cook
perhaps you have one of your own …
Trading down is feeling more and more analytically aligned…
