April 25, 2016With the Cleveland Browns trading their second-overall pick to the Eagles, they are essentially out of the sweepstakes to select either California quarterback Jared Goff or North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz. But, head coach Hue Jackson seems to have his eye on a quarterback that could potentially be better than those two, per cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
“Everybody keeps talking about two of the best quarterbacks in the draft, no one knows that, right? We’ll see how it all unfolds here in two or three years and see if we were right or wrong. But I feel very good about where we are and what we’re doing.”
Jackson, who has been known to be a great developer of NFL quarterbacks, including Ravens’ Joe Flacco and Bengals’ Andy Dalton, wants Browns fans to know that the new-look front office has everything under control heading into next weekend’s NFL Draft, whether it be finding that quarterback or drafting the best player available.
“I told you guys before, I’m not like everybody else. Our organization’s not like everybody else. Everybody keeps saying about this player and that player. We go about doing our evaluation the way we do our evaluation. Okay? And that’s not slighting the quarterbacks or any position. What we feel is best for our organization is what we’ve done. We’ve traded with the Eagles, we’re now at No. 8, we have some tremendous picks this season and into the future. We feel very good about where we are. And I’m not really concerned about what anybody else feels or thinks about where we are.”
Even if Cleveland doesn’t draft a quarterback in 2016, Jackson believes that the quarterbacks that are currently on the roster – Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, Austin Davis, and Connor Shaw – are good enough to keep the team afloat as they begin the rebuilding process (or would it be building process), again.
“I feel very good about the four guys we have here. At the same time, we still know there’s players in the draft that we might have an opportunity to acquire as well so we’ll have to see how it unfolds.”
While many may believe that Goff and Wentz have the best shot to become a team’s franchise quarterback, Jackson believes that coaching plays a key role in a quarterback becoming one of the best in the NFL, no matter how good the gunslinger is. And, well, the Browns’ new head coach has a tremendous track record of developing quarterbacks, as previously mentioned.
“Everybody keeps using that term very loosely about franchise quarterbacks. What are franchise quarterbacks? There’s not Peyton Manning and Tom Brady walking around all the time. Every quarterback has to be coached and put in an environment so that he can be successful and be good. That’s when guys start becoming franchise quarterbacks.”
The top quarterbacks in the draft not named Goff or Wentz include Memphis’ Paxton Lynch, Michigan State’s Connor Cook, Ohio State’s Cardale Jones, and Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg. The NFL Draft begins April 28, with Round 1 Thursday, beginning at 8 p.m. ET; Rounds 2-3 are on Friday, April 29, beginning at 7 p.m. ET; and rounds 4-7 will be Saturday, April 30, starting at noon ET.

I’ll double down and plead please please please don’t pick any QB at #8. “Diamond in the rough” could apply to almost every QB in this draft including both Goff and Wentz IMO. I’ve been hearing Hackenberg’s named mentioned by people in general conversations. I just hope if a QB is chosen it isn’t at #8. It’s time for an impact player to finally be drafted by this organization. Impact player on the field not off.

i would think we would trade down from #8 if we were to try to get lynch … or possibly package some of our 3rd & 4th round picks to move back into the 1st round.
“diamond in the rough” can be had in the 3rd or 4th round … or even later.

I would so much prefer a diamond in my newly mowed, easy to spot, manicured front lawn. Absent that, I’m a total homer, and I would love to see them take a chance on Cardale in the 3rd round.

Honestly, I would prefer to trade up from 32 to get Lynch, if he is, indeed, the apple of Hue’s eye. That way you ensure a Top 6 player (excluding the QBs) and you get your QB hunny bunch.

Wow. I just read that article and am struggling to find his point. Is he saying we’d clap too much?
Something along the lines of “He’d be too much a celebrity and all the fans would be talking about him to the detriment of the ‘Starting’ QB”

The Brown’s draft strategy is the alternative to mushrooms and acid.
I’m not sure myself. I see mushroom clouds of cauliflower and guys cutting down trees, so I’m going with Prince’s “Diamonds and Pearls” since Hue is going to give us diamonds. That is all.

I read the article and determined that I must be dumb. I don’t see anything in this article that talks about Hue Jackson having a diamond in the rough. If anything he seems to be saying that he’s completely fine with the QB room as currently constructed.
