Valparaiso flexes defensive muscle, holds Cleveland State to season-low 43 points
February 16, 2016Greetings from Broad City: While We’re Waiting…
February 17, 2016With plenty of buzz surrounding the Cleveland Browns taking (yet another) quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, current Browns gunslinger Josh McCown was recently asked how he feels about the team possibly drafting his replacement in the near future.
In an interview with PFT Live Tuesday, McCown said that he would love to be the starter in 2016-17 but that he understands the Browns’ current situation. If the Browns decide to draft a quarterback early in the upcoming draft, McCown says he’ll be happy to serve as a backup and/or mentor.
“My expectation is to come into work and be available and be ready to do whatever’s asked of me. If that’s to bring along a draft pick and to start until that guy’s ready, then I’m willing to do that. If that’s to go the full 16, I’m excited about doing that. If that’s to help that guy as he takes over, whatever my role, whatever’s asked of me, I’m just here to win football games. Whatever my role is, I’m all in. I just want to help.”
Drafted by Arizona in the third round (81st overall) of the 2002 draft, McCown still has two years remaining on his contract with Cleveland, both of which will be at $5 million a year. With the team expected to part ways with quarterback Johnny Manziel on March 9, they will also have quarterbacks Austin Davis, Connor Shaw, and Pat Devlin under contract in 2016-17.
In his first season with the Browns, McCown completed 186-of-292 pass attempts (63.7 percent) for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions in eight starts. The 36-year-old, who will turn 37 this off-season (he was literally born on the 4th of July in 1979), also ran for 98 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
As a veteran, McCown is showing the team that even though the Browns may be bringing in someone to replace him, McCown is prepared to help and mentor the the next quarterback in Cleveland. Both ESPN’s Todd McShay and Mel Kiper have the Browns snagging California quarterback Jared Goff — who has expressed excitement at the prospect of coming to Cleveland — with the No. 2 overall pick in their latest mock drafts.

Stay healthy. Don’t suck.
That is your role.
Nothing less than a Super Bowl, Josh. Nothing less.
“However I can keep a job and be paid, I’m all in. I just want to be paid.”
We need more of that attitude in our QBs.
Not that he was a top QB or anything, but I can’t help but wonder what the Browns might look like right now if McCown had stayed healthy the whole year and Manziel hadn’t played much if at all. McCown ran the offense effectively and made good use of the weapons he had. He looked young for his age, too. I guess a 36 year old who has been mostly a career backup ages a lot better than one who has played nearly every snap, lol.
josh mccown …
hi WOOF … but didn’t billy vegas have all 3 wins in his starts ? mccown definitely surpassed my expectations … his only weakness was holding on to the ball too long in the pocket.
“if McCown had stayed healthy past the first drive in the first game”
Fixed it for you.
I like Josh McCown he’s great for the team . He”s damn tough, ..what he needs to stay healthy is the Browns Offensive Line to Step Up and do a Better Job protecting the QB. Everybody is using that Joe Thomas line now “Josh is a great QB when he stays healthy”” Which is ironic….when Mr Team Captain ,Mr Pro Bowl …Mr Thomas’s job is on that OL…and the OL has NOT done a good job protecting the QB. Not even close to a good job. Alex Mack, and Swartz either. Hue needs to work on that OL, there are a couple of pro bowlers who underperform.
McCown needs an OL that protects the QB, the pocket, to stay healthy. Browns Offensive Line is just that OFFENSIVE…. Unless they start performing better, no QB, can stay healthy, or even survive with the current OL’ s underperformance .
What pocket?
Brown’s OL sucks.
You bring up a good point about Manziel. Whatever anybody says about Him. He is talented.
True, but going airborne and getting cracked in the head isn’t the OL’s fault.
Cam Newton he is not.
True ,..but I think he thought he was Johnny Manziel, ..I like a QB who gives it everything, that drive to Win,..Mobile QB that can Extend plays when the pocket collapses. I think Josh has learned his personal limitations. I think he’s even better than when he first came to Cleveland. Then there’s the other end of Brown’s QB spectrum unmobile pocket QB, Austin Davis unable to score in the Red Zone or anywhere else on the field, He stays in the pocket and goes down more often than a hooker on a busy night.
Yes and let’s start being competitive in the AFC North. Making the playoffs would be a great start. I like Josh, he gives Everything. I hope the Browns keep him.
I really like McCown, his attitude and work ethic are amazing. Such a team player.
and a good drinker
