Jim Thome, Albert Belle, Frank Robinson, Charlie Jamieson to be inducted into Indians’ Hall of Fame

Heritage Park, which is already filled with 40 members of the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame, will have four additional plaques come July 30. Indians legends Jim Thome, Albert Belle, Frank Robinson, and Charlie Jamieson are Cleveland’s 2016 Hall of Fame class, the team announced on Friday. Cleveland will honor the four former players as the 2016 Hall of Fame class in a ceremony on July 30, before the team plays host to the Oakland Athletics. It will be the first time since 2007 that there have been at least four players inducted in the same season.

A little about each player:

Jim Thome (1991-2002, 2011)

Just one season after his statue was unveiled 511 feet from home plate (the spot where his record-breaking home run landed in July of 1999), Thome will add yet another piece to center field Progressive Field, this time in Heritage Park.

With the Indians for 13 of his 22 years in the MLB, the 13th-round selection (333rd overall) in the 1989 draft leads the Indians in career home runs (337), walks (1,008), and strikeouts (1,400). The home run king also finished with 1,353 hits, 928 runs, 937 RBIs, and 18 (!) stolen bases during his long career in Cleveland. He was also an All Star with the Indians during three seasons (1997-99). A third baseman who was converted into a first baseman and eventually a designated hitter, Thome’s place among Cleveland lore has been among the more polarizing topics due to his decision to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies (and later with the division-rival Chicago White Sox) in what was the prime of his career.

Albert Belle (1989-96)

During the 90’s, Bell and Thome were two of the most feared hitters for the Indians, so it’s only fitting that they join the team’s Hall of Fame at the same time. Like Thome, Belle spent more than half of his career in Cleveland, after being a second round draft pick in the 1987 by the Indians, but played elsewhere beyond the team’s mid-90s heyday.

In his eight-year career with the Tribe, Belle finished with a .295 batting average, 223 doubles, 242 home runs, 751 RBIs, at least one MVP snub, and just 622 strikeouts. He was an All-Star in his last four seasons in Cleveland, including a 1995 campaign that he finished with 52 doubles, 50 home runs, and 126 RBIs. He is the only player in the history of the league to have at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season. Shout out to Mo Vaughn.

Frank Robinson (1974-76)

He may have only spent at the end of his career, before deciding to retire, but the first African-American manager in baseball history, he managed the Indians all three years he was with the team, after Cleveland acquired him in a trade with the Carolina Angels.

Robinson finished with just a .226 batting average, 14 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 37 strikeouts in his final. While his numbers may not stick out, he is most likely being enshrined due to the fact that he broke the color barrier for MLB managers (much like the Indians Larry Doby broke the color barrier in the American League).

Charlie Jamieson (1919-32)

Jamieson set the Indians’ single-season record in singles (172), and is among the franchise’s best with 942 runs (fourth) and 1,753 hits (5th) during his 14-year career in Cleveland.

Like the rest of the class, he spent most of his playing career with the Indians. But, he also hit an impressive .33 during the team’s six-game victory over the Brooklyn Robins in the 1920 World Series.
