January 13, 2016A new Hue of orange: Jackson hired as Browns head coach
January 13, 2016While rumblings and leaked images have littered the Internet for weeks, Nike has officially lifted the curtain on their Black History Month (or “BHM”) collection for 2016. Like last season, Nike’s four signature basketball athletes—LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving—will have their signature sneakers decked out in the year’s BHM-specific designs. Unlike last year, they will be joined by a litany of other Nike and Jordan Brand shoes, including Air Force 1, Roshe One, and Air Jordan 1.
From Nike:
The Black History Month collection honors and celebrates Black heritage, in sport and beyond, around the world while also providing financial support to Nike’s Ever Higher Fund, which was created to bring mentorship, sport and all of its benefits to African American youth.
Nike is proud to support numerous national and local organizations that provide services to underrepresented youth, including African American youth, during the year, through community development, coaching, city league sport programs, and early childhood development programs. Long-time partners include the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs, National Head Start and Coach Across America.
The BHM collection debuted in 2005 and featured only an Air Force 1. Since this time, it has evolved into not just a line of footwear, but apparel as well. Both the Kyrie 2 and LeBron 13 will feature black-based uppers while having BHM accents throughout—James is featured on the Flywire upper which contrasts against the white midsole and icy, translucent outsole, while Irving’s black Flywire upper is contrasted predominantly in the stability strap that graces the top of the shoe in addition to the multi-color outsole.
All of Nike Basketball’s signature shoes for this year’s “Black History Month” collection release on January 18. The LeBron 13 will retail for $220 while the Kyrie 2 will retail for $100 less at $120.
