Best Performance
No. 2 Mogadore beats No. 1 Warren JFK, 35-7
No. 2 Mogadore put in an exceptional performance in the Division VII playoffs, defeating No. 1 ranked Warren JFK, 35-7. Mogadore put the pedal to the metal from the outset, taking a 28-0 lead in the second quarter and going into halftime up 28-7. The Wildcats defense was dominating versus the talented Eagles, forcing three turnovers in the second quarter that led to 21 points. The defense scored two of the team’s five touchdowns in the game themselves. Mogadore was in control of the entire game. Most of the game was played on JFK’s side of the field, with few scoring opportunities for the Eagles. Warren JFK came into the playoffs with a 9-1 record and was Region 23’s No. 1 seed.
Biggest Surprise
No. 2 Toledo Central Catholic upsets No. 1 Benedictine, 31-30
The biggest upset of the week — and the playoffs overall — came in the Division III playoffs, as No. 2 Toledo Central Catholic upset the defending champs of Division IV, No. 1 seed Benedictine. The Bengals were on a 24-game win streak and had already beaten Toledo Central Catholic back in Week 1. This week’s game was a classic that took two overtimes to determine a winner. The Bengals fought back from a fourth quarter deficit to force overtime.
Both teams scored a field goal in the first overtime. In the second extra period, Toledo scored a touchdown on their opening possession and then Benedictine answered with a touchdown on theirs. After they scored, the Bengals decided to go for the game-winning two-point conversion. The attempt was stopped by the Fighting Irish, earning them the huge upset victory over Benedictine. Toledo Central Catholic was led by running back Michael Warren, who rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Brian Schoeffler, who threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns, led Benedictine in the defeat.
Best Individual Performance
QB Kyle Vantrease, Stow
Quarterback Kyle Vantrease led No. 2 Stow to a big victory over No. 3 Lewis Center Olentangy. Vantrease completed 11-of-21 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, along with rushing for an additional 115 yards and two scores. The Stow quarterback participated in four of the team’s five touchdowns in the victory. His two rushing touchdowns came on runs of 6 and 54 yards, while the passing touchdowns were passes of 10 and 42 yards. He will lead his Stow Bulldogs next week against the No. 1 seed St. Edward Eagles.
