NEO High School Football Week 9: Pair of Eagles soar over competition
October 26, 2015Everyone’s a winner in the Tristan Thompson negotiation
October 26, 2015Unable to finish Week 7’s embarrassing loss to the St. Louis Rams, it appears that Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown will not miss any time after injuring his shoulder late on Sunday.
Here’s the latest from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:
#Browns QB Josh McCown will have an MRI on his shoulder today, but I’m told he’s just a little “banged up.” May miss some practice time tho
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 26, 2015
McCown injured his shoulder when his arm was hit attempting a deep pass in the fourth quarter. He was also evaluated for a concussion, but was cleared. Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reported McCown “appeared to be in great pain” following the game, so it would not be surprising if he missed some practice time this week.
The veteran quarterback appears to be headed for an MRI on Monday, but it sounds like he is not expected to miss any game time assuming said MRI comes back clean. If McCown plays, he may be without wide receiver Andrew Hawkins, who enters the NFL’s concussion protocol following the loss.

If true, what an indictment of Johnny. Pettine decides if he’s going down it’s going to be riding the broken down old mare. Couldn’t live with himself later if he had entrusted what’s left of his fate to Johnny Distraction.
McCown hasn’t been the problem from what I’ve seen. He’s made some questionable decisions but for the most part considering his teammates I think he’s done alright.
Or it could be seen as an indictment of Pettine’s decision-making as a coach. His track record to date isn’t particularly good.
But you can’t hold a coach responsible for the play of a few, sick twisted quarterbacks. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole NFL coaching system? And if the whole NFL system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our sporting institutions in general? I put it to you, BKJD – isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to Mike Pettine, but we’re not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

“You’re asking me that if our starting quarterback is healthy on Sunday will he play?” — as heard on Pettine’s presser today.
It would appear to me that McCown is not losing the starting gig for any reason other than health. I suspect Pettine has no interest in “seeing what Manziel is” this year and would only do so if forced by Haslam.
It is also my opinion that Haslam has no interest in Manziel taking over the team. Kid embarrassed the hell out of Jimmah last year and has now taken another step backwards again this year.
Jimmy’s ego and billion dollars don’t take kindly to no punk kids ‘barrasin them.
LOL
Maybe an indictment of Johnny or perhaps it’s Pettine’s stubbornness? He is the same man who stuck with Hoyer three games longer than the rest of the world knew he should last year. Or perhaps Pettine doesn’t want to kick the tires on someone who might actually improve as a player? God only knows.
I mean if that’s the case–Pettine and the team’s assessment–then why keep Johnny around any longer? If he’s not going to play (absent an injury necessitating his playing) and he’s a source of embarrassment, then why not cut him loose?
Note, I’m not 100% sure he doesn’t have the talent to play (and neither does the team since they won’t give it a shot in this worthless season), but if they feel that way, it’s stupid to keep him on your roster when you’ve already cut bait with others including Terrance West.
The only reason to release him is to stop people from playing Monday morning QB by constantly reminding everyone that Manziel is on the roster.
My guess is that they may be actively shopping him prior to deadline and can’t risk injury to him in a start.
I do believe he has a value, maybe 3rd or 4th round pick which Farmer does covet.
So why cut him if you can sucker Dallas into taking him?
I mean Jesus look at Bowe… Dude can’t crack our WR Corp with injured players and we’ve left him on the active.
Based on what we saw out of Manziel “three games too late” I’d say it was 100% the right call. Never saw a more clueless/lost player on the field, and I am including Kiki Mingo’s rookie campaign.
hi CB … it’s always easy to second guess after the fact , but pettine has made the right QB decisions in my mind. manziel was not prepared last year & mccown is playing well & probably has surpassed all of our expectations this year.
now , when it comes to his pal DC jim o’neill , i am wondering about pettine’s stubbornness.
Here is my thing, Johnny is 1-0 as a starter this year and McCown is 1-5. To me not a hard decision. Not only that, we need to see if he has the talent to be our future qb. And I don’t want to hear about his off the field issues.. They are nothing compared to a lot of NFL players, like Big Ben locked in the bathroom with a girl in the club and on 2 separate occasions being suspected of rape.. This kid likes to drink.. The difference is the success he has had. If he was winning us games there is not a person in the media or in Cleveland who would call for him to be cut even if nothing changed with him off the field.
