WFNY Roundtable: Rough Rivers, Charge on San Diego Hill

October 2, 2015The Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers are in a similar situation when the two meet up at Qualcomm Stadium in Week 4. Both teams are getting carved up on the ground, and as a result, they each sit at 1-2 through the first three weeks of the new campaign. For the Browns, this isn’t such a bad start, as the fan base has grown accustomed to even weaker starts over the past several years, and will now look to get back to .500 when they travel west for a big AFC showdown with the Chargers.
Surprisingly, tickets are being sold at a discount on the secondary market, as TiqIQ.com has gathered that the average ticket price at the moment is just $104.67 on average, while the get-in price sits at a mere $33. The pricing is a steep drop from San Diego’s season average, $167.26, while also sitting below the Browns’ average on the year as well, that being $134.60. While this isn’t amongst the most high-profile matchups on the Week 4 slate, it’s still an important game for both clubs, both of which are trying to avoid a dreaded 1-3 start.
As a result, Browns fans might be tempted to travel and watch their team attempt getting back to the .500 mark. Hipmunk.com makes it simple for out-of-town fans to get to the game, as they sport a variety of cheap San Diego flights. In addition, they also offer affordable hotel rooms in San Diego, starting from $58 per night.
The Cleveland Browns opted not to make the bold move of permanently switching quarterbacks, even after Johnny Manziel led the team to their first and only win in Week 2. It ended up backfiring to a certain degree, as Josh McCown was under center while Cleveland suffered a disappointing home defeat at the hands of the Oakland Raiders in their last game. McCown was solid throughout the contest, but his pedestrian play early on dug the Browns into a tough 27-10 hole. Later on, an ill-advised McCown pass led to the game-sealing interception.
McCown’s inability to come through in the clutch put his downside on full display, while the Browns continued to get carved up on the defensive end. None of that can happen in Week 4, as McCown needs to be more consistent against a very shaky Chargers defense, and Cleveland’s run defense can’t be as leaky against a solid duo in Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead. Fortunately, they do possess a solid defense against the pass, boasting one of the best cornerbacks in all of football, Joe Haden. His presence will certainly be needed against Rivers, who can perform as well as anyone when he’s on his game. If Cleveland can buckle down defensively and get some consistency from McCown, they’re certainly capable of pulling off the upset. They’ll desperately want this game, too, as a win here can have them back at .500 with a 2-2 record.
