July 11, 2015Cleveland fans needn’t worry about any hostage situation or opposing teams sending in caravans to take him away: LeBron James has signed his new contract to remain a Cleveland Cavalier.
The team announced the signing via press release. As with the other deals signed this week, contract details were not revealed per league policy. Previous reports say that James’ deal is for two years, with an opt-out after the first year. The first year is worth about $23 million, and the second year $24 million.
ESPN’s Dave McMenamin hinted earlier today that LeBron would sign, but the official word came down shortly before 2:30 PM via team press release.
“LeBron’s re-signing today is a reflection and continuation of his strong, personal commitment to help deliver championships to Northeast Ohio and Cavs fans everywhere,” said Cavs GM David Griffin. “We share this deep level of commitment with him. His impact upon this team, his community and the game are impossible to overstate and we look forward to continuing on our mission together.”
Unlike his teammates Iman Shumpert, Kevin Love, and Mo Williams, LeBron did not post anything contract-related on Instagram. In fact, the last picture James posted is still his “Zero dark thirty-23” post from the beginning of the playoffs.
