Next Up: Oakland Athletics, the West Coast, and the End of the World
July 30, 2015Mike Pettine and First Impressions: Training Camp Notes 07.30.15
July 31, 2015So yesterday’s WWW was interesting, huh? Happy Friday people. This is a special Friday for me because I’m heading into a family vacation next week where there’s access to the ocean. Can’t wait. Hope you all have a great weekend. Now, while we’re waiting…
Letting the Indians fade into the distance…
I’m think I’m mostly done with the Cleveland Indians for the year. I might continue to watch some and might even have occasion to get excited, but I will not continue any kind of campaign of negativity against them. To do so would be redundant and counter-productive. They’re living with the season in their own way as they look to reshape the roster by allowing St. Louis to once again try and find a way to compete for what the Indians wish they could have. I’ve pointed out the mistakes in communications as well as what I feel are their flaws, and it just doesn’t make sense to harp on it anymore.
I love a lot of players on this team. I love the manager and I truly hope that they can find a way to compete soon. I hope they consider changing the way they communicate with fans about the market and their position in the league, but that’s it. Someday things will change, either at the hands of these same people, or at the hands of their replacements. As I’ve leveled up in age1 I finally realize what’s in my control and what’s not. I realize that the petulance of screaming for change is only rewarding in a fleeting moment. It also doesn’t allow for Indians’ leadership to change and grow, should they be capable of doing so.
That’s the one thing that does give me some hope should Mark Shapiro and Chris Antonetti continue with this team. They don’t operate in the same exact ways they have in the past. They really do seem to be willing to try and shake things up and improve upon their ingrained processes. Of course until the changes work to my – and every other Indians fan’s – satisfaction for more than one season it won’t be good enough, but that’s about as far as I can go in terms of trying to hold anyone accountable. It’s kind of depressing. Life was more interesting when I thought I had more power or influence in some delusional way.
Terrelle Pryor is fun to talk about…
The caveats with Terrelle Pryor conversation are numerous, but it feels like everyone is on the same page. He’s a longshot as a receiver and the position change is really difficult. Meanwhile, the Terrelle Pryor experiment is all upside with just about no downside. Everyone can watch this guy try to defy the odds and it’s easy to just root for him to be successful. If he is successful it’s just another weapon for the Browns on offense. It’s so much different than a quarterback battle.
Whenever Browns fans get into a QB battle, it’s divisive. Only one guy can play at a time and if you’re backing one over another it’s because you think the team’s relative success depends on your guy becoming “the guy.” While I wish the Browns had a better quarterback situation staring them in the face, I’ll take the Terrelle Pryor root-fest over the hate-filled quarterback debates that arise in Cleveland.
Andrew and I spent a lot of time talking about Terrelle Pryor and Braxton Miller as they switch positions. Did you hear it yet?
Your weekly moment of soccer zen…
1,000 people play the Foo Fighters’ Learning to Fly
Goosebump city. It’s not even close to my favorite Foo Fighters song, but the power of hearing and seeing 1,000 people rock it out is almost too much to handle. So very cool.

The indians will win 10 out of their next 13, pull themselves within striking distance of the 2nd wildcard… Fans (us) will get excited and then the Tribe will implode.
Re: Foo Fighters – I got goosies when they started playing, and they got even bigger when they started singing. Just awesome.

Late to the party, but is there an outside chance pryor makes it as a special teams player, (gunner possibly? or KR) and then continues to work on refining skills as WR?
