Say it Like it’s 1986: JUUULIOOOOO!
June 23, 2015Life After Cavs, Going No. 2, and Maron-Obama: While We’re Waiting…
June 24, 2015This past weekend saw the reunion and celebration of the 1995 Cleveland Indians, who famously won 100 games in a strike-shortened season before falling to the Atlanta Braves of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz in the World Series.
Part of the weekend festivities included a sort of panel program before a live audience moderated by the radio voice of the Indians, Tom Hamilton. Hammy relayed to former centerfielder Kenny Lofton a request from the audience: Folks wanted to see him run the bases like his less fleet-footed teammate, Carlos Baerga.
Lofton resisted for a split-second before hopping out of his chair. “I’ll do it for the fans,” he said.
Lofton’s first move was to pull his necklace outside his shirt so as to best mimic Baerga, who was no stranger to donning gold on the diamond. Then, with a host of teammates including Jim Thome, Charles Nagy, Sandy Alomar, and Baerga (who had his camera rolling) looking on, Lofton took off for an imaginary first base in a spastic, hunched over motion that wouldn’t look out of place in a Depends commercial.
I don’t remember Carlos being quite that clumsy on the basepaths, but all parties involved got a laugh out of it, and that’s what counts.
Ah, memories. Here’s hoping that the current crop of Indians gives us something to celebrate two decades from now.
