Browns select Miami RB Duke Johnson with No. 77 pick
May 1, 2015C-Cap Recap: Undefeated in May
May 2, 2015The Cleveland Browns traded into the last non-compensatory pick in the third round and selected Washington State defensive lineman Xavier Cooper at the No. 96 spot. FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager first reported the trade with the New England Patriots. FOX Sports Ohio’s Zac Jackson again first reported the selection.
The details on the trade, via ESPN’s Field Yates: Browns received No. 96 and No. 219. The Patriots received No. 111, No. 147 and No. 202. The Patriots were right back on the board at No. 97 in the third round, but compensatory picks cannot be traded.
Cooper, who left with one more year of eligibility, finished with 32.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks in his Washington State career. He was mentioned as a possible fit for the Browns at the No. 77 spot entering Friday by WFNY’s Joe Gilbert. Instead, the Browns took explosive Miami running back Duke Johnson.
He’s regarded as an explosive defensive tackle who doesn’t quite have the biggest frame at just under 6-foot-3-inches. SB Nation’s Danny Kelly posted a long interview with Cooper last week. One of his most impressive games this past season was against the Utah Utes, with the highlight film below.
Combined with the selection of Danny Shelton at No. 12 and Nate Orchard at No. 51, this pick adds even more Pac-12 talent and depth to the team’s defensive line. The Browns allowed several career-best days to running backs last season and these improvements should go a long way to fixing that ailment.

And still…no WRs.
Are there any good ones left?
Lippett?
I suppose…but next year, we better take one, or four.
“you can never have too many D-linemen,” say a lot of folks.
“you CAN have no wide receivers,” said me. “If that is the case, you need to draft one.”
If you went DT there, why not Michael Bennett?
If you learn Xavier Cooper’s story, it becomes clear that the Browns front office wants to build a locker room as much as a roster. A lot of these picks are guys who overcame some sort of adversity. Maybe they help out the second-year guys who are in the middle of their adversity right now.

You already have 4 WRs: Hartline, Bowe, Hawkins and Gabriel. I don’t expect to see another drafted if anything perhaps a TE. Was the TE out of Miami taken yet?
This is an interesting question perhaps it has something to do with schemes I don’t know.
Sounds like a slightly undersized 4-3 DT who will be a pass rushing end in our 3-4 scheme. I only wonder who besides Rubin isn’t back next year. That unit is getting a little crowded. Still, they were terrible at both stopping the run and pressuring the quarterback last year and I can’t blame them for going all-in to turn that unit around.
