April 5, 2015Claiming the Central: Cavs vs. Bulls Behind The Box Score
April 5, 2015On Saturday, the Cleveland Indians and Corey Kluber agreed to a long-term extension, and now on Sunday, the Indians and Carlos Carrasco have reportedly reached an extension, according to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports added to the report that Carrasco and the Indians agreed to a three-year contract extension on top of his 2015 salary with two club options and guaranteed money around $22 million. Passan adds that the contract has escalators along with the two options that could max the contract out to $50 million. This marks a great weekend for the Indians, signing their top two starting pitchers to long-term extensions in a matter of days.

Update on Carrasco deal: It's going to be a three-year extension on top of his 2015 salary, so guarantee is closer to $22M through 2018.

Clarifying Carrasco deal: It's actually three-year extension on top of 2015 salary, so guarantee is closer to $22M. Options for 2019, '20.

Carlos Carrasco's deal can max out ~$50M with escalators and options. Guarantee is four years, $22M. Both options would take it above $40M.

Carrasco, 28, was starting his first of three arbitration years. He posted his most impressive season in 2014, when he went 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA (14 starts). In his five-year career, he has appeared in 88 games (54 starts) and has a 19-26 record with a 4.30 ERA. Carrasco seemed to have turned his career around last season, showing signs of his true talent late in the season.
Recently, Cleveland’s front office, although they are considered a low-budget team, have locked up many of their top players. With the extension of Kluber on Saturday and Carrasco on Sunday, it looks as though the Indians want to lock up their best pitching arms as well. It is a very good route to go for a team with a limited budget. Build within and then keep the in-house talent for multiple years. These two signings will hopefully be a spring board for the 2015 season, which starts on Monday!
