March 13, 2015Browns reportedly interested in receivers Dwayne Bowe and Stevie Johnson
March 13, 2015I can’t talk about the Browns and what happened with Jordan Cameron yet. All I am willing to say right this second is that the whole thing is weird and feels like one of those “only in Cleveland” things. I’ll leave it to Jim Florentine, a great comedian and Dolphins fan who I was lucky to hang out with last night. During his set last night to a Browns crowd, he was hysterical when he joked, “Jordan Cameron? I don’t even want him. I think he got a concussion on the plane to Miami.”
Thad Lewis is a good signing but…
There’s nothing wrong with Thad Lewis and signing him to compete for a backup job for your NFL football team. In a league where injury can strike on any single play, you have to be overly prepared. Where it becomes problematic for a team – any team – to sign Thad Lewis is in the face of other seemingly poor quarterbacking options. The Cleveland Browns boast a quarterback depth chart that very well might welcome Thaddeus Lewis and simultaneously open the door of possibility that he’s the best of the bunch.
This isn’t me being overly negative about the Browns or even unfairly smacking down the other players. The fact remains that the Browns have Josh McCown as the old, once-solid backup quarterback, Johnny Manziel as the flashy, proved-nothing hopefully former party-boy, and Connor Shaw as the maybe someday he can be Brian Hoyer, Ryan Fitzpatrick or Matt Flynn level of secondary NFL prospect. At this stage of all those quarterbacks’ careers, it’s not unreasonable to think that Thad Lewis at the age of 30 out of Duke starting his fifth season as an NFL player might just be the best of the bunch.
That’s not me being snarky or overly negative or unfair to the Browns. That’s sincere honesty regarding what we know – and more importantly what we don’t – about the Cleveland Browns and their quarterback prospects for 2015. If you’re slotting the QBs today, right this minute, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to slot Lewis 2nd and have it look like this.
1. Josh McCown
2. Thad Lewis
3. Connor Shaw
4. Johnny Manziel
How shocked would you really be if Thad turned out to be the best in a training camp situation given these options? I wish it was more ridiculous.
I’ll see you soon DirecTV…
I tried it. I really did. I gave Ye Olde Cable Overlords a chance to earn my business, and save me some money, but ultimately the tradeoff in service is not something I want in my life. I’m an addict to HD and it bugs me to know that there are things out there that I could have that I can’t have because of the service I’ve chosen at this particular moment. It’s the most firstest of first world problems and I’m not proud to admit my feelings, but I’ve been overly honest about plenty of embarrassing things on the podcast and here. It’s without any pride at all that I announce I’m going to go with the more expensive, premier television experience with far more channels than anyone actually “needs” in the world. I welcome you back to my life soon DirecTV, even with your abusive advertising tactics.
The Federal Trade Commission is taking DirecTV to court over allegations that it’s been deceptively advertising certain satellite TV deals for years. In its complaint, the FTC alleges that DirecTV failed to properly disclose important terms of its TV packages. The complaint says that DirecTV typically advertised 12-month deals without noting that they required a two-year contract, that prices were raised substantially during the second year, and that early cancellation fees may be imposed. The complaint also says that DirecTV failed to mention that offers of free premium channels, like HBO, would result in charges if those channels were not cancelled before the free period was up.
I am not here to defend or dispute any of these allegations on DirecTV’s behalf. I find it to be a shame that DirecTV has to pretend it’s the cheap alternative to anything. That’s not how they should be selling themselves. Their hook is that they have the most and best HD offering, at least compared to what I have available to me where I live. Some people want a Honda Civic and some people want to buy an Accord with leather seats. Shrug.

ONE TIME!
Looking forward to The Velvet Teen…
One of the more underrated bands in my collection is The Velvet Teen. I don’t even remember how I came to know this band, but they’ll forever be a part of the musical landscape of my life. One of their songs, “Mother of Love,” is a staple on the playlist that I have that puts my two boys to bed every night. The music is rich, inventive, expertly performed and sung with some of the most gorgeous vocals I’ve ever encountered in rock. The last time I saw them I tried to specifically compliment the drummer, but he didn’t seem to understand it. Anyway, I love this band so very much and yet not too many people know of them. They’ve announced they have new music coming out and I’m really excited about it.
Until then, here are a few of my favorite songs by the band.
Hope you love them as much as I do. Also hope you have a great weekend. Go see Cinderella and we’ll talk about it on Monday. Cool? Cool.

Due to Cameron’s injury history and weaknesses as a blocker the Browns may well be a better team in the long-run without having him on the books. However, his defection to Miami feels like a canary in the mine. The players feel the instability and dysfunction in Berea, perhaps even more acutely than we do. Hopefully more will be reported on this today, cause it doesn’t look so good right now

What’s upsetting on this is that of the few few guys they are targeting, they are signing elsewhere. As for Cameron, instead of transition tagging him for $7M, they offer him a two year at that rate (and then of course hilarity ensues). Now Miami has Cameron signed and Clay tagged. Nice job Browns.
Wonder when they are going to find these supposed “right guys at the right price” to start for us? It’s day 4–now do I have permission to be upset with the lack of planning and execution in free agency?
I’m driving this boat, CB – glad to have you onboard!!!
Sounds good. I’ll be manning the cooler.
I’m going to channel my inner Will Gibson for a second…
The Browns are like a canoe. At any given time, they have X holes in the bottom. The most corks they ever seem to have to plug these holes is X-2. And this offseason, they seem content to let other teams take their corks without trying to replace them. (Instead, they give the canoe a shiny new paint job and increase the cost to ride in the canoe!) They can only draft so many corks, and Kosar knows at least one of those corks isn’t going actually plug well enough and burst out at some point, increasing the speed at which the canoe is sinking. And they seem incapable of finding and getting the equivalent of Flex Seal – a good QB. (I would almost be willing to mortgage the farm, do whatever it takes to get Drew Brees. I literally can’t envision what good Cleveland QB play looks like. And it might actually help us get other FA corks, or retain the corks we already have that are jumping canoe for something that might turn our to be Flex Seal.)
Alright, I’m done corking around. I don’t know why I’m wasting text and thought on the Browns when I’d rather be reliving last night.
hi Craig … i am more into classic rock than heavy metal , but i frequently watch “that metal show” & know who jim florentine is … he seems like a down-to-earth good guy … funny too.

Last year, I think we all thought Ray was a brilliant tactician in resolving the Lombanner inflicted Mack situation.
Now, I’m beginning to think it was blind luck.
‘ya lied to me! http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view3/3641645/coffee-crystals-chris-farley-o.gif
LMAO !! … sorry , man.
I did just watch the SNL Best of Jimmy Fallon which featured that skit.
He wasn’t worth what he got or was reportedly offered by the pumpkinheads. Just makes Gibson’s tender look just that much worse. Enjoy Gibson while you can.
I’m looking at the “front page” for WFNY and amazingly you have to search and search for the Cavaliers game last night and the Indians, pfft, are they doing anything? But no problem when it comes to the football team man look at all of the coverage.
Drew Brees outdoors in north coast weather would not be the Drew Brees we’ve all come to marvel at in NOLA. Not that he’d suddenly look like Manziel, but given his age and price tag, not sure we’d be getting a great ROI.
Will Ferrell’s baseball odyssey for charity yesterday in MLB was pretty cool.
it’s gipson … but i know what you meant.
No wonder he ignored me on Twitter – doh!
I hear ya, and I was maybe half serious. But for all the talk of stability in the front office and coaching positions, stability at the QB would sure help that.
Oh and I’m desperate for a QB.
mind if i tag along?

the guy set a million college records at……wait for it……Purdue. Not exactly south beach.
Talent plays anywhere, IMO.
I do recall his days in West Lafayette. And if we were getting a 26 year old Drew Brees instead of a 36 year old version, I’d agree with your feelings on talent and location. But if fantasy football has taught me anything, it’s that this Drew Brees does not perform at the same high level out in the elements as he once did. Happens with age. And even his C game might be better than anything we’ve seen since Kosar. But I just don’t see it as worth it for the price it would cost. It’s another short-term approach to a long-term issue.
