NFL Free Agency, Titus’ Battle and Brackets for the Cure: While We’re Waiting…
March 16, 2015Baseball is fine, but MLB could use some tweaks (Part 3)
March 16, 2015Suddenly, it’s been a month since my last tongue-in-cheek J.R. Smith three-point update. As you can see in the WFNY Stats & Info collection, I’ve been blogging occasionally about Smith’s rapid ascension up the Cleveland Cavaliers record books for long-distance attempts. After hitting six threes on Sunday, here’s a detailed status check for where he stands now.
Most games with 10-plus three-point attempts in NBA history:
1. Ray Allen — 114
2. J.R. Smith — 78
3. Baron Davis — 76
T-4. Stephen Curry — 67
T-4. Antoine Walker — 67
6. Jamal Crawford — 65
I wanted to double-check this since Smith took another 11 threes on Sunday. In fact, he recently moved into second-place all time for most double-digit three-point attempt games in league history. This isn’t surprising since, as I’ve mentioned many times before, he’s arguably the most prolific long-distance attempt guy ever. Whenever he’s gotten the minutes, he’s had no trouble chucking up tons and tons of three-point shots. (Usual caveat: This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s just a fun thing and the stats are staggering.)
Most games with 10-plus three-point attempts in Cavaliers history:
1. LeBron James — 17 (605 games)
2. Wesley Person — 14 (328 games)
3. J.R. Smith — 8 (33 games)
T-4. Damon Jones — 7 (209 games)
T-4. Mo Williams — 7 (186 games)
6. Dan Majerle — 6 (82 games)
With the win in Orlando, Smith also broke a three-way tie for most such games in the franchise’s history. He’s now only got Person and James to beat, but is unlikely to reach them with only 14 games left this season. It’s humorous to look at how quickly the above players reached their marks. More on that in a moment, of course.
Most career three-point attempts in Cavaliers franchise history:
29. Ricky Davis — 287 (183 games)
30. Dajuan Wagner — 286 (102 games)
T-31. Matthew Dellavedova — 282 (125 games)
T-31. Steve Kerr — 282 (188 games)
33. Gerald Wilkins — 270 (162 games)
34. Omri Casspi — 244 (108 games)
35. Ron Harper — 235 (228 games)
36. J.R. Smith — 230 (33 games)
Now this, this is the money chart. This is the one I’ve been having the most fun updating. In the last update, Smith had moved up to the No. 45 spot all-time. Since then, he has surpassed the illustrious names of Mike Bratz, Henry James, Jarrett Jack, Jamario Moon, John Bagley, Andre Miller, Trajan Langdon and, with his second shot on Sunday, Wally Szczerbiak. As always, scanning through these names has been the most fun part of the project.
Most single-season three-point attempts in Cavaliers franchise history:
At first, it seems counter-intuitive that Smith would be lower on this last list here. That’s mostly because only seven players (James, Price, Ferry, Gibson, Irving, Jones and Person) combine for 27 of the 48 franchise’s single-seasons with 230-plus three-point attempts. Fellow first-year Cavalier Kevin Love is climbing steadily up this list, at No. 14 with 335, and projected to crack the top four if he plays in every remaining game.
Most three-point attempts per game in Cavaliers franchise history:
1. J.R. Smith — 7.0 (33 games)
2. Baron Davis — 5.8 (15 games)
3. Kevin Love — 5.2 (64 games)
4. Dan Majerle — 5.0 (82 games)
5. Mo Williams — 5.0 (186 games)
6. Lester Hudson — 4.7 (13 games)
Lester-sanity! The Baron Davis trade! Ah, this is my new favorite list. And again, it’s just fantastic how J.R. is completely destroying the field. At his ongoing 7.0 three-point attempt per game pace, he should pick up another 98 shots in the final 14 games. That would give him 328 with the Cavaliers, only moving him above Ricky Davis into the No. 30 or No. 29 spot all time, depending on Dellavedova’s pace. Nothing too drastic, as Love (335) and the immortal Jeff McInnis (344) are a big jump from there. But again, pretty darn awesome for less than 50 games.
