Inside-Out: Cleveland Browns’ two lines are polar opposites
October 10, 2014Game Illustrated: Tristan Thompson
October 10, 2014Well, I guess we have to go another year without the Foo Fighters playing halftime of the Super Bowl. In my mind, Dave Grohl’s band is an obvious choice to play the big stage with mass appeal. Alas, we found out last night that it will be none other than Katy Perry. Let’s just hope the Browns are in one of the locker rooms while she’s performing.
The Wall Street Journal reported in August that Perry, Rihanna and Coldplay were asked if they were interested in playing the Super Bowl. The newspaper also had reported that the NFL was looking for artists to pay up to perform at the game, which draws massive ratings.
Perry, in an appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday, said she’s “not the kind of girl to pay to play the Super Bowl.”
That might be the buried story in all this. The NFL asks artists to pay to play the game as opposed to carving out a budget to procure the services of that artist. It makes sense, of course. Whenever anyone plays the Super Bowl, they can expect a huge uptick in their album sales and YouTube streams for the next few weeks and maybe months after getting that huge exposure.
Billboard calculated the biggest bumps from playing the Super Bowl, and it is substantial. Tom Petty’s greatest hits album took a 196% jump in sales and his biggest singles were being downloaded like crazy on iTunes. Prince saw similar results for his catalog the week after playing the halftime show in 2007.
Back to Katy Perry, I think she’s a pretty good selection, to be honest. She’s got really great songs. Her show is gigantic and well-scripted so it should play well on TV. Despite her somewhat suggestive lyrics, she retains a coy, bubblegum image, so the NFL likely won’t have to worry about it turning into some Madonna / Lady Gaga “artistic” sex show.
As most of you probably know from the podcast, I saw Katy Perry at The Q over the summer in Cleveland. It was an entertaining show, even if there wasn’t a whole lot of live singing going on. I won’t look forward to it as much as I did Bruno Mars in recent years. I also don’t think it will have the hype factor that Beyonce seemed to bring, but it’s an improvement over the Madonna, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj “thing” that we saw back in 2012.
We’ve talked about this topic multiple times on WFNY, so we don’t have to rehash it again, but if you want to go back and look at all the old discussion, here it is.

I assume that Weird Al will be accompanying her as well, right? We must have Weird Al.
“I saw Katy Perry at The Q over the summer in Cleveland”
You took a daughter or a niece right? Free tickets and the wife wanted to go? Help me out–I’m trying not to deduct substantial permanent points!
Also, they supposedly asked Coldplay?! Not to knock them too harshly as a band, it’s just a terrible fit. Bruno Mars was at least high energy and poppy.
Al Davis on display, Lenin style, during a Katy Perry halftime show? Intriguing
Katy Perry gif time?
Now this guy right here, he knows what he’s talking about. Perry seems pretty savvy so maybe she’ll find a way to work Al into her performance. If for no other reason to appease a group of the populace who may not be fans of her.
I saw Lady Gaga this summer. Couldn’t name you one of her songs before going. Can only name you one now. One of the better shows I’ve seen in a long time (and I’d like to think I see a fair number of shows). There’s something to be said about big production, pop-music shows.
This needs to be happening all the time. It begs the question – if NFL owners were figures from history, who would be whom? The Davis-Lenin thing works surprisingly well though I actually might go Stalin instead.
I say you might as well go full re-animation, Weekend at Bernie’s style. After all, Katy Perry needs some background dancers.
And I’m pretty such whatever involvement Al Davis has in this, his son won’t mind. Anyone who looks like this is probably up for whatever…
if she can work with Elmo, then she can work with Al.
Jimmy Haslam’s historical doppelganger is _________?

NSFW would apply to 99% unfortunately. I’d help you but we’re no longer BFFs!
Prince was the last must-watch halftime show for me, and this one won’t change that. I don’t really get the fuss over Katy Perry. Is she talented? Eh, I suppose. Her music isn’t really my cup of tea (though I admit ‘Dark Horse’ is catchy), but that doesn’t make her untalented. Attractive? She’s not NOT attractive, but we aren’t talking modern-day Athena here. Might be showmanship–haven’t seen her perform before. But the buzz surrounding her just doesn’t compute for me.
Good from a visual standpoint, if slightly ideologically dissonant. Historically speaking, would be better if we could identify a tycoon who owned roadside shelter-markets throughout the eastern and western Roman Empire. Pilutus Jaius?
well, candidly, I was going for the whole top of organization guy being investigated and everything just sliding off him like water off a duck’s back.
Honestly, I can do without lip syncing dance crap. Does any drummer actually take sticks and hit on something anymore? Anyone really play bass and guitar, etc? “Pop Music” should be renamed “audio files” as oppossed to music. And all these “young” musicians, are annoying, the best in the world are not even famous and have played 2 times or more as long as these “kids” have even been alive, and usually are not attractive (so they can’t be sex symbols). The days of good music are gone, and I bet the Browns will rival the Steelers before real musicians actually are popular again… JMHO…

Haslam feels our pain
How is it even possible to type “Haslam feels” without accompanying it with this picture:

I had never been to one of those typical “giant arena pop shows” in my life. I like some of Katy Perry’s music and I think she can really sing. She didn’t do much of it when I saw her, but it was a fun date night with my wife. Great entertainment. Good people watching. I wanted to see it. Shrug.
I also go to see hardcore and metal shows. I really do love to see lots of different kinds of music. Although considering the cost / benefit, I probably won’t be rushing out to another giant pop show any time soon.
Fair enough, but if one day your WWW column talks about the One Direction concert you saw last night, we are going to have a serious man to man talk:)
EDIT: “…we are going to have a serious human to human talk”
