September 29, 2014Week 5 of college and high school football saw a lot of interesting games. In college, Akron had the best performance with their upset win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Ohio State’s offense really started to roll this week over Cincinnati. The MAC remains tight, while the OAC elite, John Carroll and Mount Union, continue to dominate. In high school, there was a big shake-up in my rankings. St. Edward lost for the second consecutive week, while Mentor and Hudson continued to roll through their schedule.
So let’s take a look at Week 5’s installment of the Ohio College and High School Football Roundup!
College Football
Ohio State cruises past Cincinnati 50-28
The Buckeyes had another shaky game on defense, but the offense was pretty much unstoppable. The Ohio State offense had a total of 710 yards of offense, with a balance of 330 yards of passing and 380 yards of rushing. The offense was led by running back Ezekiel Elliott, who had 182 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, and 51 receiving yards. Quarterback JT Barrett also had a great game with 330 yards passing, four passing touchdowns, and 79 yards rushing. The Buckeye offense was on pace for a record number of total offense, but a bad snap at the end of the game caused them to just miss the record of 718 yards. The Bearcats were led by the duo of quarterback Gunner Kiel and wide receiver Chris Moore. Kiel threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns, while Moore had three receptions for 221 yards and three touchdowns. The Buckeyes move to 3-1, while the Cincinnati falls to 2-1.

Akron upsets Pittsburgh 21-10
The Zips had one of the biggest upsets of the weekend with this win over Pittsburgh. The defense of the Zips was the biggest factor in the game, holding the Panthers to 349 total yards of offense and forcing two turnovers. On offense, Zips running back Conor Hundley rushed for 148 yards on 19 carries. Akron quarterback Kyle Pohl threw for 193 yards, a touchdown, and interception. Akron leading receiver was Mykel Traylor-Bennett, who had three catches for 72 yards and a touchdown. Akron was able to hold Panthers star running back James Conner to only 92 yards rushing, his lowest of the season. Akron moves to 2-2 on the season with this upset victory.

Ohio beats Eastern Illinois 34-19
Ohio moves to 3-2 on the season with a win over Eastern Illinois. The Bobcats saw a strong performance from running back AJ Ouellette, who had 87 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Ohio dual threat quarterback JD Sprague struggled through the air with 143 yards and two interceptions, but rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Eastern Illinois actually outgained Ohio on the day 432 yards to 387 yards. Quarterback Jalen Whitlow, who had 289 yards and a touchdown through the air and 112 yards and a touchdown on the ground, led Eastern Illinois’s offense.

Bowling Green outlasts Massachusetts 47-42
Bowling Green moved to 3-2 on the season with this win over UMass. The Falcons quarterback had a big day, throwing for 443 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. On the ground for Bowling Green, running back Travis Greene had 110 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Roger Lewis, Ryan Burbrink, and Ronnie Moore all had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown. For UMass, quarterback Blake Frohnapfel had a huge game with 589 yards passing, five touchdowns, and an interception.

Toledo topples Central Michigan 42-28
Toledo also moved to 3-2 on the season with this win over Central Michigan. Quarterback Logan Woodside, who had 339 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, an interception, and a rushing touchdown, led the Rockets. His main target was receiver Alonzo Russell, who had seven catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Terry Swanson added 97 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush threw for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

Kent State falls to Virginia 45-13
Kent State is still looking for its first win of the season after this loss to Virginia. Kent State was outgained by Virginia 520 yards to 318 yards. Virginia quarterback Matt Johns threw for 227 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions and added 65 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Cavaliers running back Kevin Parks rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown. Kent State quarterback struggled throwing for 239 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions.

Notre Dame College loses to Charleston 28-14
Notre Dame College lost their first game of the season this week, moving 3-1 on the season. Charleston saw a great game from running back Marvin Elam, who had 160 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Charleston had a total of 256 yards rushing in the game. Notre Dame and former Willoughby South quarterback Ray Russ threw for 240 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. His main target on the day was Mitchel Shegos, who brought in ten catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Ohio Dominican topples Walsh 26-8
The #7-ranked Division 2 Ohio Dominican Panthers moved to 4-0 on the season with this victory. Ohio Dominican was led by running back Brandon Schoen, who had 143 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Panthers quarterback Mark Miller threw for 276 yards and a touchdown. Walsh struggled on offense including quarterback Brody Tonn, who threw for 163 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions. Ohio Dominican outgained Walsh 444 yards to 212 yards in the game.

John Carroll cruises past Baldwin Wallace 45-7
John Carroll beat Baldwin Wallace to remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0. John Carroll and St. Ignatius alum Mark Myers had a huge day, throwing for 374 yards and five touchdowns. His main target was former Benedictine receiver Marshall Howell. He had five receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Former St. Ignatius tight end Brendan Carozzoni also had five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. John Carroll outgained the Yellow Jackets in total yards with 509 yards to only 215 yards of Baldwin Wallace. Baldwin Wallace falls to 1-2 on the season.

Mount Union rolls over Marietta 63-7
Mount Union was dominant again with this win over Marietta. Mount Union and former St. Edward quarterback Kevin Burke threw for 247 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 29 yards rushing. Burke’s main target was Roman Namdar, who had five receptions for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Purple Raider receiver Taurice Scott also had four catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Mount Union completely shut down Marietta’s offense, outgaining them in total yards, 584 to 165. Mount Union moves to 3-0 on the season.

High School Football
Hudson beats Cuyahoga Falls 28-0
Hudson had another great game shutting out Cuyahoga Falls. Quarterback Mitch Guadagni showed off his dual threat abilities this week versus Cuyahoga Falls. He threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 86 yards and a touchdown. His main target on the day was receiver Colton Whited, who had seven catches for 160 yards and a touchdown. The Explorers move to 5-0 on the season with this victory.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary outlasts Archbishop Hoban 33-27
The Fighting Irish won in triple overtime to beat Archbishop Hoban. The Irish defense forced a missed field goal by Hoban in the third overtime. The Irish then followed up that miss with two runs by running back Vince Lockett resulting in the game-winning touchdown. Lockett rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on the game. Irish quarterback Dom Davis threw for 71 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns. The Fighting Irish moved to 3-2 on the season with this victory.

St. Edward loses to Bergen Catholic (NJ) 14-10
The Eagles lost their second straight game with this loss to Bergen Catholic. St. Edward held the lead for most of the game until Bergen Catholic scored the game-winning touchdown with less then a minute left in the game. Bergen Catholic quarterback Jarrett Guarantano was responsible for both of their touchdowns, a passing and rushing touchdown. St. Edward’s only scores came from a field goal by John Patrick Walton and a 39-yard touchdown run by Cole Gest. St. Edward moves to 3-2 on the season.

Glenville rolls over Collinwood 42-2
Glenville had another dominating week in the Cleveland Senate League. The Tarblooders saw a great performance in special teams from Ralph Davis. Davis took two punt returns for touchdowns in the game. Chris Levette also added two touchdowns with rushing touchdowns from three and 21 yards out. Collinwood’s only score came when Glenville had a snap go out of the endzone. Glenville moves to 3-2 on the season.

Mentor cruises past Brush 48-0
Mentor had another great performance this week with their shutout win over Brush. Mentor running back Alex Mathews led the offense with 103 yards rushing and three rushing touchdowns. Cardinals quarterback Jake Floria threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver Jason Blizzard added a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown. Mentor moves to 5-0 on the season.

St. Ignatius falls to Paramus Catholic (NJ) 37-31
St. Ignatius fell in double overtime to nationally ranked Paramus Catholic (NJ). The Wildcats had many chances throughout the game to put the game away, but Paramus Catholic was able to tie the game up in regulation with a pick six off of Wildcat quarterback Jacob Kucia. In the second overtime, St. Ignatius missed a field goal and then gave up the game-winning touchdown. The Wildcats were led by their defense, who had five interceptions in the game. The Wildcat offense was unable to muster much offense even with these five interceptions. St. Ignatius falls to 3-2 on the season.
St. Ignatius vs Pinehurst School (Ont.) (Sat. 7pm)
Strongsville cruises past Parma 27-7
Strongsville was able to move to 4-1 on the season with this win over Parma. The Mustang defense only gave up one touchdown pass on the day and took a 17-0 lead at halftime. There were not stats available for this game.

Solon beats Valley Forge 45-13
Solon remained unbeaten at 5-0 with this win over Valley Forge. The win for Solon gave coach Jim McQuaide his 100th win at Solon. Solon’s Melvin Jackson led the Comets on offense with touchdown runs of three, six, and 25 yards. Solon led 45-0 at halftime and did not score in the second half. Valley Forge’s Adam Groves was responsible for both of the team’s touchdowns with a passing and rushing touchdown.

Avon upset by Midview 49-42
Avon was shocked this weekend with their first loss coming against Midview. Midview scored the winning touchdown with only 19 seconds left in the game. Midview quarterback Dustin Crum had a great game in the air and on the ground. Crum threw for 295 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, while he rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Avon running back Gerett Choat had a good game going with 98 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, but missed most of the second half with an injury. Avon falls to 4-1 on the season.

Benedictine beats Bishop Watterson 34-24
Benedictine won a tough game moving to 4-1 on the season. The Bengals had an exceptional performance from running back Dontez Rash. Rash rushed for 232 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Bengal quarterback Brian Schoeffler only completed three passes, but two of them were for touchdowns. Bishop Watterson’s three touchdowns came from touchdown runs by Sam Maglicic.

Bedford rolls over Euclid 49-7
Bedford remained perfect on the season at 5-0 with this win over Euclid. Their two backs in the backfield, London Cloud and Chawntez Moss, led Bedford. Cloud rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns, while Moss rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown. Moss also had a 97-yard interception return for touchdown on defense. Bedford quarterback Carlin Colston threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Nordonia topples Cloverleaf 34-0
Nordonia remained unbeaten at 5-0 with this shutout win over Cloverleaf. There were not stats available for this game.
