Reflecting on Lary Doby—while on a run through the park: Reliving Yesteryear
May 8, 2014McShay and Kiper have the Browns landing Watkins, Bridgewater
May 8, 2014The NFL Draft has finally arrived. The buzz is at an all time high, but the uncertainty is still there around most of the picks. This draft seems to be even more unpredictable then ever before. Here is my attempt at guessing what will go down tonight in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and also the rest of the picks for the Browns. Unlike other outlets, we didn’t try to revise, repost and recycle rumors and innuendo. This is it. Please feel free to discuss my selections in the comments. And most of all, enjoy!
First Round
1. Houston- DE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina
The Texans go with the most talented player in the draft. Clowney is too good to pass up. The Texans would have the more dangerous defensive line with him and J.J. Watt.
2. St. Louis (from Washington)- OT Greg Robinson, Auburn
The Rams look to get some protection for Sam Bradford and keep him upright. Many think they could go with Sammy Watkins, but I believe they address the line with Robinson because they can get a receiver with their next pick.
3. Jacksonville- OLB Khalil Mack, Buffalo
The Jaguars will be deciding between Watkins and Mack here. I believe they will go for defense because of Gus Bradley’s desire to have a dominant defense. Mack is the best defender in the draft besides Clowney.
4. Cleveland- WR Sammy Watkins, Clemson
The Browns go with the best player on their board and grab the biggest playmaker in this year’s draft. Watkins and Josh Gordon would give the Browns the most dangerous wide receiver duo in the league. I believe they will look at quarterback with one of their next picks.
5. Oakland- WR Mike Evans, Texas A&M
The Raiders get the best receiver on the board and someone who will be a huge help to newly acquired QB Matt Schaub. They have looked for a number one receiver for quite a while and so they get one with the selection of Evans.
6. Atlanta- OT Jake Matthews, Texas A&M
The Falcons get a franchise left tackle who will help keep QB Matt Ryan upright. Matthews is considered as the best pass blocker in the draft. The Atlanta offense is centered around the passing game and so they need great pass blockers.
7. Tampa Bay- DT Aaron Donald, Pittsburgh
The Bucaneers go with the best defensive tackle in the draft. Donald will help strengthen the middle of the Bucs defensive line. He fits perfectly in Coach Lovie Smith’s defense.
8. Minnesota- QB Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M
The Vikings go with one of the best quarterbacks in the draft. They look to get their franchise quarterback to lead back to the playoffs. Manziel will bring the Vikings a breath of fresh air.
9. Buffalo- OT Taylor Lewan, Michigan
The Bills get some protection for EJ Manuel and help him stay healthy. Lewan is a top ten player in the draft and can be a franchise left tackle for the Bills for many years.
10. Detroit- CB Darqueze Dennard, Michigan State
The Lions need a lot of help in the secondary. Dennard would give them a number one corner that can help the talented defensive line get to the quarterback more.
11. Tennessee- ILB C.J. Mosley, Alabama
The Titans get a middle linebacker that could end up being one of the best players in the draft. Mosley would give the team much needed leadership and talent on defense.
12. NY Giants- OT Zack Martin, Notre Dame
The Giants looks to improve their offensive line after a lot of overhaul in the offseason. Eli Manning needs help staying upright in the pocket and Martin will help in this area.
13. St. Louis- WR Odell Beckham Jr., LSU
Beckham will give the Rams much needed help in the passing game. He will give Bradford another target in the passing game. Beckham can also contribute in special teams.
14. Chicago- S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Alabama
The Bears are in need of secondary help especially at the safety position. Clinton-Dix would give them much needed playmaking help for the Bears’ defense.
15. Pittsburgh- CB Justin Gilbert, Oklahoma State
The Steelers find a corner that can help their secondary for many years. Gilbert will give them a press corner who takes out the best receiver on the opposing team.
16. Dallas- S Calvin Pryor, Louisville
The Cowboys get one of the best safeties in the draft. Pryor will improve their secondary and form a strong trio with Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr.
17. Baltimore- TE Eric Ebron, North Carolina
The Ravens look to get another target for QB Joe Flacco. Ebron is considered the best tight end in the draft and so the Ravens would get a good value here.
18. NY Jets- WR Brandin Cooks, Oregon State
The Jets continue their overhaul on offense by adding another target for whoever plays QB for them. Cooks is a good compliment to newly acquired Eric Decker because of his great speed.
19. Miami- OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Alabama
The Dolphins continue to revamp their offensive line after a terrible 2013 season. Kouandjio can form a solid duo with newly acquired Branden Albert. Their offensive line was the worst one in all of the NFL last year.
20. Arizona- QB Derek Carr Fresno St.
The Cardinals look toward their future by taking the heir apparent to Carson Palmer. Carr will be able to sit behind Palmer and learn from the veteran. It is a perfect fit for him.
21. Green Bay- OLB Anthony Barr, UCLA
Barr will be a great compliment to Clay Matthews. He will strengthen the pass rush of the Packers. He will help take the weight off of Matthews. This is a great value at this point in the draft.
22. Philadelphia- WR Marqise Lee, USC
The Eagles find their replacement for Desean Jackson. Lee would give Coach Chip Kelly and QB Nick Foles anther target in the high powered offense.
23. Kansas City- QB Blake Bortles, UCF
The Chiefs go with a shocker and draft Bortles as a future replacement for QB Alex Smith. The team nabs one of the best quarterbacks in the draft and at a great value.
24. Cincinnati- CB Bradley Roby, Ohio State
The Bengals get younger in the secondary. Roby will be a good match with their other corner Leon Hall. The secondary is aging so they must look to get someone younger.
25. San Diego- CB Kyle Fuller, Virginia Tech
The Chargers are lacking at corner, so Fuller would be a great pick for them. He is a talented corner that has great technique and toughness for the position.
26. Cleveland (from Indianapolis)- QB Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville
The Browns get rewarded for waiting to get their QB by getting one of the best here. Bridgewater was the best quarterback coming into the season and he showed nothing during the season to change that. He is very accurate and has great intelligence.
27. New Orleans- OLB Ryan Shazier, Ohio State
Shazier helps improve the pass rush of the Saints. Shazier gives them help at a position of need and he improves their overall defense.
28. Carolina- WR Davante Adams, Fresno State
The Panthers have a huge hole at the wide receiver position. Adams is a talented receiver that can help improve this weak group. Adams will try to replace Steve Smith in Carolina.
29. New England- TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington
The Patriots get another tight end to pair with Gronk. Seferian-Jenkins is a very talented player that would fit their scheme perfectly and give QB Tom Brady another target.
30. San Francisco- WR Kelvin Benjamin, FSU
The 49ers find another playermaker for QB Colin Kaepernick. He would give them a huge receiver that can pair with WR Michael Crabtree.
31. Denver- DT Timmy Jernigan, Florida State
The Broncos also get a great value in Jernigan. He will help the talented defensive ends and outside linebackers by taking up blockers. He will be a great fit for the Broncos.
32. Seattle- OT Morgan Moses, Virginia
The Seahawks do not have many pressing needs to fill. Moses is a good offensive tackle, who can fit right in at right tackle for the Seahawks.
Second Round
35) CB Jason Verrett, TCU
The Browns finally get a corner to pair with Joe Haden. Verrett has great technique and athleticism that helps him stay on receivers. He could end up being a lockdown corner in the NFL. The only flaw he has is his smaller size.
Third Round
71) OG Cyril Richardson, Baylor
The Browns need help on the right side of the offensive line. Richardson is a good pick in the third round. He could contribute right away at the right guard position.
83) ILB Preston Brown, Louisville
Brown will be a good young replacement for D’Qwell Jackson. He can play along side Karlos Dansby and learn from one of the best inside linebackers. He is a talented player that could play right away especially because of the lack of depth at the position.
Fourth Round
106) RB Terrance West, Towson
The Browns get a running back that could develop into a starting caliber player. West has one of the highest upsides of any back in the draft.
127) WR Jared Abbrederis, Wisconsin
The Browns snag a player that has reliable hands and could develop into a 3rd or 4th receiver. Abbrederis is a player who can also contribute on special teams.
Fifth Round
145) OT Matt Patchan, Boston College
The Browns get more depth at the offensive tackle position.
Sixth Round
180) S Ed Reynolds, Stanford
The Browns get a developmental safety that can contribute on special teams.
Seventh Round
218) ILB Dan Fox, Notre Dame
The Browns get more depth at inside linebacker and someone who can contribute on special teams.

ENOUGH WITH THE MOCK DRAFTS!!!!!!!!!!
Mike Evans is very big. I’m not sure he’s offensive tackle big, but he’s big.
I’m not sure the Browns wait until the 5th round to nab an OT.
I would LOVE this.
But in case it doesn’t happen, I’m keeping some torches in my trunk by the convention center tonight.
It’s pick 218 so obviously I take that with a grain of salt, but as an ND fan I couldn’t stand Dan Fox this year.
I like the Preston Brown pick a lot, but think he’ll still be there in the 4th. Go OT earlier and wait on Brown.
That would be a solid first round.
I see the first 5 as you do. So yeah, this is “definitive.” Almost science-like.
no way JAX passes up Watkins with Blackmon doing his own science experiments keeping him out of the league.
(actually found his picks and reasoning quite good for all picks. absolutely hate Pitt & Balt getting those guys and Fuller going 1 pick ahead of us, but if we end up with Watkins & Teddy, I’m going to be happy)
I would love this draft. Abbrederis in the fourth would be really intriguing. Great hands and he gets open. But he might get broken.
I still like Mitchell Schwartz, so that is why I took a tackle later and picked a guard in the 3rd.
i also dont see any way the raiders dont go with a tackle after the velheer and saffold mishaps.
Al might be dead, but it’s still the Raiders. Any justification for any player can be considered valid for them.
“Manziel will bring the Vikings a breath of fresh.”
Sure, but if you drop him in a bottle of Diet Coke, will he make it explode?
but it’s their first one
Agreed (and nice sane breakdowns throughout these months), particularly when there was solid guard play next to him.
Thanks
5 hours & 20 minutes left to go. Then we’ll see how accurate this mock draft is.
And then commence mocking.
Trade the extra 3rd, 4th rounder and the 5th rounder for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th next year. Then do it again in 2015. Extra 2nd rounder for perpetuity. Banermetrics.
so how did that dynamic Oklahoma State pitch and catch combo work out in the NFL anyway?
and honestly, if Jax goes WR, I’d be thrilled to get the genu-wine snot-nose LB.
Being at #4 is so much better than 6. Just follow your board and you get
a star. Stay away from the cutesy overthinking Ray, and the roster will
look significantly better by Saturday morning. Banner did one thing
well by setting this up on a tee for you. Steady on the wheel, Ray.
well, Justin showed that he was the true talent behind the combination. a shame he self-destructed as he has.
Yeah, mocking Ray Farmer, as well as all other NFL GMs, for not drafting the “right” players. Sigh!
Wreck it Ralph has your answer:

so, they are going to be drafting Canadian southpaws?
has anyone ever figured out why “all” Canadians are lefty?
I heard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is left handed.
“Being at #4 is so much better than 6.”
I understand what you meant, but this still made me smirk. Earlier picks are better? Interesting.
what I meant: so many years (like last year) we’re saying “if only we had lost one more game…” At 4 they cannot screw it up. Cannot. (right?)
I have serious doubts that a team as young as ours that wants to compete this year is going to actually turn in 10 draft picks. Like just ain’t gunna happen. I’m thinking either or both of the 26th and 35th are going to get upgraded. I can see them not wanting to bet on which QB the cards want, and jumping to 19. And then coming up from 35 for whichever of the 3 corners are there.
think that’s exactly right. And the longer Farmer waits to deal those extra picks the less leverage he has by getting competitive offers. I’m guessing the extra third and fourth, or maybe our 5th and 6th will go toward moving up in the first rounds.
That’s why moving down for more picks makes it even more complicated – requiring more trades to dump more picks.
