WFNY on the 2014 NFL Draft: Joe Gilbert’s Top Five Cornerbacks
May 5, 2014SpiderMan 2, Transcendence, Divergent and Draft Day – WFNY Podcast – 2014-05-05
May 5, 2014I stand by the fact that despite all the talk and posturing that the board of prospects is 99.99999999% set in Berea. Still, as Thursday evening approaches – and as I personally ready myself for pizza at Map Room – the pundits are still reporting what their sources are saying. It could be smokescreen or it could be fire, but it’s burning up Twitter regardless.
MANZIEL!
And @mortreport reports he'd expect the Browns to snap up QB Johnny Manziel with the No. 4 pick if he's still there.

And some fire extinguising…
While Manziel to the Browns is the popular pick, I'm still not buying it. At least not yet. Although, great fit in Shanahan's system.

Some understandable draft fatigue exasperation…
#Browns are drafting everyone & trading with every team – that should cover every rumor between now & Thursday night #sarcasm #DraftWeek

And a bit of Sammy Watkins just for fun…

I was serious about that Map Room thing. You should really come out and watch the draft with us.

So every national outlet expects the Browns to take Manziel and all the local individuals expect them to pass. For once I might go with the locals. Khalil Mack IMO is their preferred choice at this time.
You needn’t take it any further, sir! I’ve learned me lesson, sir! I’ve seen now what I’ve never seen before. PLEASE DEAR GOD, DRAFT WHOEVER YOU WANT…JUST MAKE IT STOP!
ask yourself why on earth anyone who knows anything in berea would find it beneficial to inform espn whom they like at #4? if you’re cultivating future potential employers (cough, lombardi, cough) then maybe. but if you’re focused on your first draft and getting your team over the top and youve been completely circumspect for the past two months… three days before the draft you’re just going to tell chris mortensen that youre taking manziel if he’s there? pfft.
“mort expects.”
this is not even a report. for all we know it’s based on nothing more than same info you and i have. mkc expects them to take carr. i expect them to take evans. you might expect watkins.
when mort reports that a source in berea says manziel is the top choice, then.. maybe.. there’s some news. till then is just jibber-jabber (and a very soft, pot-stirring tweet from adam schefter). keep your filters clean.

I expect them to take Watkins.
Do I qualify as a source?
If not, how do I sign up? What are the requirements?
there is only one way to describe my brain on these rumors right now
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-mZt2FekpIMQ/Uw0jtJz7OVI/AAAAAAAAGbA/6eWJi13YHIE/w426-h297/Africanoffice2.gif
the requirements are stringent
(1) You have to be on the internet
(2) You have inside information. Alternately, you can be within 7 degrees of Mel Kiper to qualify as a close source.
(3) You have to be able to come up with a name that has declared for the 2014 NFL draft. If it is a name not associated with the 1st round and you say he will be a 1st round pick, then you go to the front of the line.
How to Play Silly Season, Abridged Edition:
– Create a draft guide so you can be called an “analyst” on the radio. Do anything possible to be on a nationally televised draft show once so that you will thereafter be referred to as “draft expert.”
– Pick the year’s hot stories. This year Johnny made it too too easy. But in normal years with no moth batting against the klieg lights just figure something out: a wonderlic rumor, an insincere demeanor, maybe take someone else’s inference or unsourced something and repeat it like this: “according to reports …” If someone repeated it first, don’t panic, just say “according to multiple reports …”
– If an assistant GM calls you with some info – Bingo! You got your cover and a “source inside the building.” This is where you go Full Blowhard. Why would he tell you something? C’mon man, don’t overthink this. It’s Monday and you got something to post and more than enough cya.
– Agents agents agents. They will always take your calls, always call you, and since they speak to the GMs … bingo again! You got your “source close to the team.”
– Don’t ever EVER worry about being wrong. There’s 2,147 “analysts” and 359 “experts.” Each are mocking it up x 10 before the draft. Too much verbiage for accountability, everyone’s wrong. But, if you’re right … you can repeat that every year on the air forever. Just tell the host in the preproduction call, “Like I reported in ’12 Holmgren was really falling in love with Weeden’s arm, and you saw how that went.”
one additional part on your last point: Change your stances on everything weekly (at minimum) so that you tilt the odds in your favor of being right at least once. If you put out 32 mocks, then that should be 32 chances to be correct on each team. In the future, you can provide the link to that team that one time you had them pegged in the 1st round.
Goodell deserves a kick in the stones for doing this.

I think this whole thing may jump the shark. Fairly soon people will start to wise up to the fact that there is no truth to be had in any rumors or leaks or otherwise from an NFL franchise. People will still do their own analysis of prospects and make projections based on team needs, but that’s different. As far as finding actual NEWS, there is none to be had right now.

Berea damn well better be 99.99999999% sure (or at least 90% sure) who they want two days before the draft. I’m surprised nobody yet inquired with the regions beyond.
I would like to add: Only publish first round mock drafts, updated weekly. Why burden yourself with all those other rounds?
