MLB News: Shin-Soo Choo turns down $140 million from Yankees
December 18, 2013MLB News: Former prospect Jason Knapp considering comeback
December 18, 2013In the first of what will likely be a litany of mock drafts to be published between now and this spring’s selection weekend, ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Cleveland Browns selecting quarterback Derek Carr out of Fresno State.
Quarterback is the Browns’ top priority. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants a QB with size and the arm strength to push the ball down the field, and that’s what Carr provides. He is a little bit of a reach here, but there’s a lot to like about his game. He had a monster 2013 season (4,866 yards, 48 TDs to just 7 INTs), is very accurate and has great touch on short-to-intermediate throws, has a high football IQ and gets the ball out quickly. He can improve his deep-ball accuracy, but has the arm strength to make all the NFL throws and the maturity and experience to come in and play right away.
There are plenty of Browns fans who have grown fond of the 6-foot-2-inch, strong-armed Carr. Per McShay’s latest, Carr, the brother of former No. 1 pick David Carr, would be the fourth quarterback taken after Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles and Texas A&M’s Johnnie Manziel go first, second and fourth, respectively. Presently, the Browns also have the No. 23 pick due to their trade with Indianapolis. While this could reasonably be used to move up in the draft if needed, McShay has the Browns selecting Vanderbilt’s Jordan Matthews, a 6-foot-3-inch receiver who provides a combination of size and pass-catching ability, providing a complement to the Pro Bowl-bound Josh Gordon.

if you assume competency, then selecting a QB can affect the team more than any other position.
I guess it boils down to where you draw the line on a “franchise” QB though.
I thought he had a good year last year. And this year, not enough touches to draw a conclusion.
The Browns WOULD be out of their minds IF they took Carr. They won’t. I’ll be very surprised to see him go in the 1st round to anyone. When you really look at his tape, there is almost nothing there. He has maybe 2 NFL-relevant throws a game. Considering the system and team and watching him play, I consider him a poor man’s Weeden, which is very poor indeed. Someone may fall for the “maturity” angle, as he gives a clean interview. That’s it.
Don’t think the kid’s that bright either.
>>>I think Carr will be off the board by the time we pick.>>>
You are insane. He won’t be off the board by our 2nd pick.
Because he’s terrible. Please watch him throw innumerable bubble screens against the likes of (at the high end) Utah State before suggesting something so insane.
He’s horrible. He’s not 1st round material for anyone. Utah State made him look like a joke. Utah. State. I don’t want him with a 3rd even.
Like I said, “if.”
It’s a good point, and as an emendation, Wilson is easily outperforming ALL of the 1st round guys. That includes Luck.
Foles is too.
He has SERIOUS trouble anytime a safety is remotely involved. The reason he doesn’t show more picks is before the play he simply crosses off entire zones of the field where a safety could conceivably become involved. It’s an automatic in their offense. Deep safety = bubble screen.
He doesn’t have the game brain. I feel like his presence in this draft is the single biggest risk for Brown’s fans, although thanks to the TR move, I trust the new FO to understand completely overrated junk when they see it.
Just want to announce here officially, if you couldn’t tell from my barging in shouting at all the agnostic comments on here, that I am the self-declared president of the “Carr is Almost Completely Worthless” anti-fan cub. I’m fully convinced he sits where he does on mocks because of a confluence of smoke-screens, I don’t think he’ll go in the 1st round at all, and I wouldn’t spend even the Pittsburgh 3rd on him.
He. Is. God. Awful.
Seriously. He’s a poor man’s Weeden.
I’m not kidding.
If the world was completely different from the way it is, then Carr might not be a terrible idea. But it isn’t, and it is.
Taylor is still a bust potential? Tough crowd.
Okay . . .
Like I said, “if.”
The Derek Carr is Horrible Bowl is in full swing right now. Watch and pray god this isn’t the future of your Cleveland Browns.
Would you like to have him now??
How’s that Johnny Football guy working out for you?
Yes I am currently reevaluating this opinion and may be willing to draft him now.
I do still think he’s going to have struggles ahead, but I’m now expecting more of a Andy Dalton Path than the Brandon Weeden one I was convinced we’d see.
