NBA News: Cavaliers to announce Mike Brown hire on Wednesday
April 23, 2013Brendan Leister from DraftBrowns.com with some pre-draft knowledge – WFNY Podcast – 2013-04-23
April 23, 2013Draft pundit Mel Kiper Jr. published a piece in which he personally picked the first three rounds for every team. The premise was an “A” draft for each team. When it came to the Browns, Kiper used the trade down theory and came up with this-
“Cleveland Browns Top needs: CB, QB, G, ILB, TE
Rd. 1 (11) G Chance Warmack, Alabama (via San Diego)
Rd. 3 (68) QB EJ Manuel, Florida St.
Rd. 3 (76) CB Darius Slay, Mississippi St. (via San Diego)
Analysis: As the GM of the Browns, I trade down and still hit a top need. That No. 6 slot is a high-leverage one, because it could be the last chance for several teams in need to get one of the three top left tackle prospects. In this case, it’s San Diego. I pick up this year’s third and next year’s as well. Without a second-round pick, the extra pick is a big help, and I still get a great player in Warmack, a guy who fills a need and should give a big boost to the run game. Warmack should be a Pro Bowl guard. The added third allows us to grab Manuel in a good value spot. For this draft you’ll see I have quarterbacks lower than most, but that’s a reflection of how I view the class. Lastly, Slay is a nice value in Round 3, an upgrade at the corner spot across from Joe Haden. This draft offers a good balance of immediate help at need spots, and the shot on upside at QB.”
The selection of Warmack gives the Browns a rock solid offensive line, and trading back to get him allows them to address the CB position and also get a developmental QB.
If the Browns were to put this plan into action, what grade would you give? Would you be happy with Manual in the third round? What about addressing the need for a pass rusher?

If that is what it takes to get an “A”, I think i’ll pass.
I’d like to see the Manuel pick, but highly doubt he’s still there at 68, especially with Philly rumored to be interested at #35.
I thought the purpose of trading back in the first round was to also pick up a 2nd round pick???
If Milliner ended up being there at #6, and we ended up with a guard, an average at best corner and another rookie QB we all know will be starting this year, I’d be pissed. If you have a chance to address your biggest, most obvious need with an outstanding player who should improve you immediately, stop overthinking and do it. If they took the other top-rated corner, Hayden, at #11 and received a second rounder, fine.
If this guy knew anything he would be running a team instead of guessing
I like the idea of a 3 and a 2 or 3 next year in a better draft… Just me
After spending a bunch of time on youtube watching the “college quarterback vs.” videos, I don’t think we should draft a QB this year.
2 3rd round to trade back? I’d rather have a 2nd this year inmho
Who is Hayden?
Joe’s long lost brother.
(actually, Hayden is a CB from Houston who was considered a 3rd round prospect all season, but, for some reason that has escaped me, has been tabbed the prospect high-riser the past month and has now jumped Poyer, Wreh-Wilson, and gone all the way up to over Trufant and Rhodes on some boards. I still think he’s a 3rd rounder in talent).
I can’t even address this as I believe the guys he has for the 3rd round won’t be available. I wouldn’t mind this scenario, though.
Frankly, I still like that Hayden kid as a second option to Dee, as long as we get that second-rounder.
I still like Jarvis Jones. Dion Jordan is growing on me, too, but I doubt he will be there.
Next year is a better draft than this year? How do you figure?
I think this is a likely scenario (Hayden) and one I’d be happy with. It really is all up in the air right now. But my money is on a trade-down, regardless of who is available. Well, maybe they take Jordan if he is there.
This would be a stellar draft but it will never happen like this.
IMO the odds EJ Manuel falls to the 3rd round are zero. From what I’ve heard, he could very likely be picked in the first round. If that happens, Kiper’s ‘A’ draft for the Browns has the same value – zero.
However, if he does fall to the Browns in the 3rd, I could get behind that : – )
The browns really can’t affort to take a developmental QB unless they are best available. With needs at every part of the team except 3-4 defensive line, the browns need talent. What’s nice about milliner at #6 is that he’s also probably the best available there so you are not reaching for a need. If Milliner is gone, then you can trade down.
and Ryan Mallet is a top15 pick. you never know how things will shake out.
Normally, I dismiss the “Mel Kiper is stupid” comments as standard comment section noise, but in this instance, I just don’t get what he’s thinking at all….mostly with regards to Manual.
Why in the world would the Browns waste a pick on a QB that nobody can say for certain is even better than Weeden with one year of experience? Especially since the Browns just brought in Jason Campbell!
Just pick up a CB, more defensive line help, and more WR talent…oh…and get rid of two-yard-pass Shurmur. This team should at least be in the hunt for a wild card spot this year.
Get’s an A.
