Roberto Hernandez to Make Season Debut for Lake County
July 24, 2012MLB Trade News: Indians Acquire Brent Lillibridge
July 24, 2012Mary Kay Cabot was the first to report that the Browns and 1st round QB Brandon Weeden have agreed to terms on his rookie contract today.
That makes all of Cleveland’s draft choices signed and ready for camp, which opens tomorrow for rookies, and Saturday for all players-
“Weeden, the No. 22 overall pick out of Oklahoma State, signed his four-year contract today and will be on the practice field Wednesday with the rest of the rookies, quarterbacks and select veterans.
Weeden’s deal is worth about $8.1 million over the four years. Fellow first-round pick Trent Richardson signed a four-year deal worth $20.5 million, including a $13.3 million signing bonus, on Monday night.”
According to several other reports, the first three years of the deal are guaranteed, and the fourth is guaranteed for $900,000.

So Weeden got the guaranteed 4th year?
only 900k worth. But really, who cares, if they don’t want their new franchise QB in his 4th year, losing 900K will be the least of their problems.
Double True.
…but now I don’t have anything to complain about 🙁
please refer to Scott’s latest post about the Indians acquisition of Brett Lillibridge
So with Weeden’s contract now signed and in place, can they finally make the announcement of him being the starter headed into camp?
I feel like they were waiting for this domino to fall before saying anyting.
If they do not and continue this charade that McCoy still has a chance is it doing a disservice to them both or helping them compete?
i have long felt they will make the announcement official either going into or coming out of the 1st pre-season game. everyone knows that Weeden is being given every opportunity to be the starter and the only reason to not “announce” it is to just be able to say that every player has to ‘earn’ their spot.
in the end, it’s a formality
While I can understand the thought process of a player needing to earn his spot I would counter with this:
1. If Weeden hasn’t already earned his spot through his college play, combine and several interviews he should not have been drafted in the first round.
2. There is also a need to state to your fanbase once and for all “This is our guy, no matter what bump and bruises happen in camp, preseason and his rookie year, if we see the reasons we drafted him throughout, this is our guy”.
The other reason is that if Weeden falls flat on his face once pads are on, or he can’t understand the offense right away, they still leave the door open to let him learn from the bench for awhile
Yeah, no. Weeden was not drafted in the first round to learn from Colt McCoy.
