Catching Up With the Clippers
April 17, 2012NFL Report: Mike Adams visits Browns and Steelers
April 17, 2012Following a bizarre stretch of play that involved an unprovoked swing of the arm from Delonte West in the vicinity of Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward, the former Cavalier shooting guard was handed a technical foul for the only “wet willie” administered in recent in-game NBA history.
The referees missed the moist poke of the ear, but later conferred over video replay to hand West the technical foul. West, who later joked that he was merely attempting to get some lint out of the Butler product’s ear, said that the move was a “battlefield” moment.
“We’re two warriors, man, we’re out there battling on the battlefield,” said West. “I forgot, the NBA is a gentleman’s game so we’ve got to fight and scrap and do it nicely. Everything is left on the court, though. That’s what it is.
“I wasn’t frustrated. Like I said, you get caught up in the game, in the motion, it’s physical and you just get caught in the moment some times,” West said. “But like I say, you leave things where they’re at and you get on to the next play.”
When a reporter allegedly asked if the move could be dubbed a “West Willie,” the Mavericks guard reportedly couldn’t back from cracking a smile.

Who knows where that finger has been! Nasty
Looks more like a Dry Willie.
Punk move maybe he’s off his meds again.
Gloria knows where it’s been.
I’m not sayin, just sayin…
Lowest of the low? Really? That’s where we draw the line?
Love Delonte. Sure he might not be the most stable person, but he’s definitely endearing. He’s just like a kid at heart.
This video views less humorous than it reads. That wasn’t an intentionally obnoxious wet willy, that was a dry, angry poke in the ear during a dead ball for no reason to a guy who was walking a different direction.
Love Delonte, but this is him going unhinged on the court. Not funny in any way. I cringe thinking about what lies in this guy’s future.
I think it was a more innocuous action than you imply Harv, but I share your concern about what Delonte’s future holds. I feel the same way about James Harrison and others who are clearly beset by mental illness and will, upon retirement, lose the protective network of professional sports.
Not my definition of innocuous. Watch the original play by play. Delonte tracks him down, does it and says something real angry, all in plain view. Impulse control = zero. Here’s my point; thought we’d see a fringe but goofy and loveable Donte-ism. This ain’t it, this is just imbalance.
Lebron is headed South but Gloria is riding West ha
Hayward should have fell down and held the side of his head like he was stabbed…
Yep. That is something that my 10 year old would do.
I agree about the lack of impulse control. But he could’ve unloaded a punch, thrown an elbow, or taken Hayward’s legs out on a layup. Relatively speaking, a finger to the ear is a rather innocuous form of aggression: more provocation than intent to harm.
Still, I agree with you that incidents like these are a bellwether of a more dangerous impulse.
You’re being ridiculous along with those announcers. Deserving of a technical certainly, but nothing to get up in arms about even when considering West’s ongoing struggles.
That would have been the proper NBA move!!!!! 🙂
bellweather of a more dangerous impulse?
what are you afraid he’s going to speed down a highway on a motorcycle strapped to the teeth with guns and knives and a guitar case with a sawed off shotgun on his back?
it’s not quite EuroLeauge Soccer yet.
He didn’t assault anyone in the motorcycle incident. This was an actual act of (restrained) aggression against another person. So yes, I do worry that this latest incident may be a bellwether of sorts, particularly when considered against the other anti-social incidents in Delonte’s past, including the mad max ride.
I truly feel for the guy – there is no simple fix for his troubles
I feel for him to and hope he finds something to give him peace.
But, I can’t imagine where he was going on that ride (can’t think of anything ending well) and actually am glad he got pulled over before he got to his destination.
Love D-West known for such classic Cavs quotes as: “Hand’s down, man’s down”, “Hot Sauce in my bag” and the infamous “Planes, trains, or automobiles, you better have my dough-nuts!”
