NFL Draft Rumors: Browns Unwilling to Trade No. 22 Pick To St. Louis
March 4, 2012Bounties are wrong, but it doesn’t really bother me that much
March 4, 2012According to PFT the talks between Robert Mathis and the Indianapolis Colts aren’t going anywhere. In fact, they might not be going hardly at all. Mathis is one of the most talented defensive players that could hit free agency this season and is probably second among defensive ends only to Mario Williams in Houston. Mathis will be seeking a big pay-day and at age 31 he doesn’t fit the Browns’ stated free agency goals at least as of last year when they targeted younger players.
The situation in Indy is complicated too, as they figure out what they are doing with Peyton Manning, let alone free agent Reggie Wayne.
Complicating matters in Indy is that Chuck Pagano has a history of running 3-4 defenses while Mathis has only played defensive end in a 4-3 front. He might be athletic enough to make a switch, but how much money are the Colts really willing to risk on that?
So we’ll see if Mathis actually makes it to free agency and if the Browns are willing to go a little older and sign a 31 year-old to start opposite Jabaal Sheard next season.

Call me crazy but, isn’t this exactly what the Browns need ?
A great veteran player who can contribute and show all of our young D Linemen the ropes.
Unless they’d prefer to break the bank for Mario Williams…. yes.
Robert Mathis should not even be considered by Cleveland. Jabaal Sheard is only 250 lbs and mathis is undersized even more. Robert Mathis was as effective in Indianapolis because Peyton got the lead and forced them to pass. We need someone like calais campbell who is a monster on the end. Unless we switch Mathis to outside linebacker we couldn’t use him and he can’t cover anyone so teams would exploit him. Maybe even go after John Abraham as the veteran if we get campbell and we could rotate players to keep them fresh. Mathis is a great player but I love Sheard and he is only going to get better for our speed rusher and we need a big player like campbell or mario williams to hold the end for running defense.
having Dwight Freeny on the other side helps too. I agree though. We don’t want to pay him what he will likely command at age 31
would much prefer cliff avril from the lions.
avril 5 years younger and more sacks last year.
ascending talent vs descending.
Exactly having Freeney on the other side was huge. Save the money and use it on either a WR or Jeff Backus.
