Cavaliers Take on Raptors, Try For 3rd Straight Win
January 4, 2012The Cleveland Browns and Patience

About how the Cavs fell flat in Canada: “Mama said there’d be days like this. The Cavs lost handedly to the Toronto Raptors at the Air Canada Centre on the back end of their first back-to-back of the season. …Well, Kyrie Irving came back to Earth with a vengeance. The rook put up 12 points on 13 shots and mustered only four assists. This game was reminiscent of his debut: Irving was outplayed by Jose Calderon, stopped at the rim by Toronto’s bigs, and took a handful of ill-advised shots.” [Colin McGowan/Cavs: The Blog]

More on how Seneca Wallace failed with his late-season opportunity: “Perhaps if Wallace played one level better than Colt McCoy, the Browns win a few games and Wallace gets a chance to further prove himself in 2012. Wallace posted a weak 50.27 Real Quarterback Rating. This includes completing only two of 14 passes attempted to Greg Little or Mohamed Maasquoi.” [Adam Dobrowolski/Cold Hard Football Facts]

This won’t be the last time you see the Browns connected to Green Bay Packers backup QB Matt Flynn: “The Browns are positioned to make a big move at quarterback. They did not sign a free-agent passer nor did they draft a young signalcaller in 2011, and it would be surprising if they stood pat at the position this offseason.” [Pro Football Weekly]

Regular season wrap-up for the Brownies over at the ESPN NFL Nation blog: “Team MVP: The backbone of the NFL’s second-ranked passing defense was cornerback Joe Haden. It was a breakout year for the seventh overall pick of the 2010 draft. He finished sixth in passes defensed and has the potential to be a shutdown corner.” [Jamison Henley]

It’s back to basketball now. Following Tuesday night’s more impressive performance, Tristan Thompson received high praise from former Cavs coach and current Charlotte head man Paul Silas. This is some great video here from our very own Brendan. [Stepien Rules]

This quick hit about an errant newspaper typo of Baron Davis’ injury blew up Twitter yesterday. Check out Ball Don’t Lie’s Kelly Dwyer’s recap of what went down and how Baron reacted. Trust me, it’s worth the read.

He’s only played 17 games combined in the past two seasons already, but Cavaliers rookie Kyrie Irving already is on the front cover of the latest Dime Magazine. Check out the feature story from Austin Burton. Great stuff in there about how he got to the pros in the first place.

The Akron Zips made national news last week with the hiring of Terry Bowden as its new football coach. So what could the program possibly do for an encore? Hiring another former BCS head coach as an associate head coach and defensive coordinator in Chuck Amato. Check out the UA athletics press release here.

And finally, we send along a hearty congratulation to Grady Sizemore on his engagement to his longtime girlfriend. In memoriam, we must take a moment of silence for the hopes of all those Cleveland “Grady’s Ladies.” [Scott/WFNY Tumblr]

I just wish Haden could have had some INT’s this season. Someone needs to give some credit to D’Qwell Jackson, coming off of so many injuries and still being a major part of the defense. Tackling machine for sure.
The Cavaliers loss last night should cool off all those people who thought this team was more then it was based on level of competition. It’s a young, raw team with some aged veterans and fill-in talent. There will be some good wins and some bad losses but much more talent is needed. A scorer and a center for starters.
Perfect time to pop the question Grady!
Now we know why he re-signed with Cleveland!
I’d like to see the Browns sign Flynn. In the 2 games I have seen him play, he played extremely well against the Patriots and obviously lit up the Lions. If he is cheap, then sign him and use the picks on other holes.
I don’t get the love for Flynn. He has played well in just a handle of games, surrounded by a very talented team. What makes you think he could replicate that in Cleveland with worse coaching and fewer playmakers? Neither Matt Schaub and Matt Cassell have quite lived up to the expectations with their second teams. And remember how Kelly Holcomb bombed any time he was given a chance to be a permanent starter? Is there any indication that Matt Flynn is that much better than 2002 Kelly Holcomb?
Pale,
I for one would love if the Browns could find their version of Matt Schaub. Not sure what you don’t like there.
I will somewhat agree with you about Cassell, but he’s had some medical issues in there as well.
@Pale – Schaub certainly has lived up to expectations in Houston. He has been good and they were the AFC favorites before his injury.
Cassell has underwhelmed, yes. So has Kolb. But, Brunell, Hasselbeck, and Aaron Brooks all did well leaving from the GB QB-pipeline to other teams.
There is obviously a risk. He only has started 2 games and it was with the GB skill guys. But, it is 2 more games started than any of the draft picks we would look at and he already knows the WCO.
I’d say it’s a worthy risk (as long as we can get that opt-out after 2 years).
As long as it doesn’t cost too much in terms of signing other FAs, I’m coming around to the Browns taking a gamble on Flynn – particularly as it would preserve our #4 pick this year for another needed position player. I think his resume is short and slightly inflated, but why not?
Does anyone else get the impression that Dan Snyder will overpay millions for Flynn to come to the Skins? I wouldn’t be surprised if he inflated the Flynn bidding up to 8 mil a year, and at that price, I say no thank you.
@Tron – it will take more than $8mil/year for Flynn. $10mil/year is pretty standard for a starting QB these days. just look at the Fitzpatrick, Kolb, Cassel deals among others.
I know Matt Schaub, I had him on my fantasy team this year (RIP). He’s consistent, but not great. Flynn is no Schaub, but I would expect him to earn more in free agency than he is worth. That is my concern. I don’t want the Browns hamstrung by overpaying an average-at-best quarterback. That’s one thing I like about McCoy – at least he’s affordable.
Damn Grady I’m jealous!
