January 8, 2012Turnovers and Rough Shooting Force Cavs Back to .500
January 9, 2012Welcome to our new layout at Waiting For Next Year!
As I’m sure you immediately noticed, there are a lot of changes here at WFNY. We are always trying to make it as easy as possible for readers to get the news and information they want, and we are hoping this new layout will accomplish that goal.
There are some new features here for you guys to check out. The first thing you might notice is the featured post tabs here at the top. You can find the most recent article posted for the Cavs, Browns, Indians, and Buckeyes at the top. Just click on the name of the team you want to read about and you can see the most recent story posted.
Below that, you will see a section marked “Today’s Stories”. This will be a rundown of all the articles on the site in chronological order, just like we’ve always had.
To the bottom right, you will see our new Headlines section. Here you will find something a little different for us. These headlines are breaking news stories, box scores, stars, etc. When we have new information we want you to know about, we will post them there.
If at any time you want to just see a regular run down of all the content on the site in one place (sort of like the old style), you can go to the Archives in the right sidebar, click the drop down menu and click on the current month. This will bring up all the content on the site in one column.
Finally, the comments will now be using the Disqus system, which gives us a more robust, full featured commenting system allowing people to like comments, do direct replies to comments, etc.
In general, we’re very happy about these new changes. This is more or less in beta format right now, and we will doing some minor tweaks here and there in the coming weeks to make everything run as efficiently as possible. So please, if you have any feedback and/or constructive criticism for us, please let us know what you think. We think this layout is going to allow us to better organize our posts and make it easier for you to quickly find the stories and information you want.
As always, thanks for reading and supporting the site!

Don’t forget to change your favicon.
ah, cool. I’m a big fan of WP. If you ever need suggestions for plugins.. here’s a couple links from a site I co-founded. Its a webcomics tutorial/advice site but some of the plugins would be useful to you guys too.

No no, not stop – contain. I always appreciate that you’re consistent with your message and speak your mind. It will just be better organized now.
i’m sure, as with any change, there will be some bumps but feel confident things will work out well.
i’ve been waiting for the Disqus comment capabilities..
but what’s with the new G, grantland style tab logo?
this is gonna take some getting used to…can we at least change the blinding white to an off-white color? Also, I had the same Gawker thoughts ClemJax
I think that’s for “Genesis,” but I’ll let Andrew confirm.
It is for Genesis. It’s not permanent, I hope to be getting the old WFNY favicon back in place.
Are you back? See your name under Authors.
I love the headlines section, now I never need to go to espn.com again!
Thanks Dawn! I’ll check those out.
Should be fixed now. If not, try refreshing your browser.
Is there is list with links to other sites, like the old site had?
Favicons are aggresively cached by web browsers. If refreshing doesn’t work, try a “super refresh” (hold the left shift while you hit f5), or clear your browser cache.
exactly, before we had the colors of our favorite teams, I hope this will be included in the “updates”
Congratulations, guys, it looks great. I know that you always downplay the ads and whether they play a role in the website, but honestly, you do such a great job so consistently, that I hope it is worth your while. I love the new commenting options, and I look forward to even better debates. Keep it up!
Like the look. And yet the “You might also like” is still completely random
I like to think of it as a funny inside joke.
New layout is cool, it allows you to cram a lot of content and headlines into the homepage without scrolling, which a lot of people like.
I like the organization of the content, using the Genesis WordPress theme will aid in SEO which is good for you guys. I gotta say though, I really liked the design of the old layout. Like others have said, this is a standard blog layout that doesnt quite have the personality of the custom layout that the old site had. Maybe people will like this better though, it is after all about the content more than anything.
Sorry guys, but I like the old format much better.
It’s Pat Shurmur’s fault that the site changed – we would of still had the old site if the Browns would of kept Mangini
one “nice to have” feature: one some threads, it shows how many comments are currently registered at the top of the thread. on others it just says “add comment” even if there are a bunch in there. would be nice to always show the # so that we know if people have added to the discussion since we last were on the page.
Like the new look… only complaint is at work it didn’t allow me to see any of the comments, or even offer me the chance to comment.
Cleared the cache and history, no change. Sigh, guess i won’t be as involved b/c I did a lot of commenting from there during the day. If anyone has any tips please share. Using Internet Explorer, and I can’t change it due to it being a work computer.
and now they all have their comment count. thanks guys!
I cannot comment from work either, Lyon. Have to use our mobile version which implements the Disqus very well. Hope that’s not too much of a hassle.
I’ve been listed since June of 2k10 when I wrote my last piece.
Andrew was a hard workin’ man today. Thanks sir.
Unfortunately I have yet to join the Smartphone community. Oh well, looks like my wife will have to share the laptop at night until we decide to go mobile. Thanks for the reply Scott
Can someone please tell me what Disqus is? ty
Neutral on the new site; I really enjoyed the old one. But, as with all site changes, I will eventually come to accept it.
It sounds like, from reading the comments, you guys did this strategically and with a purpose, rather than just change for change’s sake, so that’s a huge positive.
Good job!
Like the new site design. Well done. I do have a thought regarding authors twitter activity. I follow a couple of the guys. I enjoy their takes in 140 or less and often follow links to features on WFNY. However since the new design release all the guys are also tweeting links to the ‘Headlines’ content which are basically brief comments on stories published by other media. Starting to feel these tweets clutter my feed. I appreciate the links to feature content, but the other stories, I feel, do not add value. I know the purpose is to drive traffic to the website and thereby increase advertising value/revenue, but personally I prefer direction to only the proprietary content of WFNY. Just an opinion. Keep up the good work men.
Interesting thought. Our Twitter feeds are automated to send out tweets when new posts hit the site. Perhaps we need to look into ways of excluding headlines from the tweets. We’ll discuss it.
