NFL Draft: Browns Roundtable, Part I

I originally came to WFNY in the fall of 2008 with a proposal: there doesn’t seem to be a lot of Columbus Blue Jackets hockey coverage on your blog, but I love your blog, follow the team religiously, and write about sports on my own blog. Let’s join up!
That first year was great as I cut my teeth during the team’s first and only playoff run. It was fun to provide that coverage to the small sect of the WFNY readership that followed along with me. It has been fun, but as the past two years have unfolded it’s become clear that something just wasn’t fitting right here. When the great guys over at The Cannon approached me at season’s end about writing about the Jackets for/with them, it was too great an opportunity to pass up. So, we’re here to announce that going forward, essentially all of my Blue Jackets coverage will be moving to The Cannon. I will be writing for The Cannon on a day-to-day basis, and will trim back WFNY’s coverage to the weekly 5-Hole columns during the season and pertinent links in WWW each morning. I’ve also updated my Twitter handle to @DP_WFNY_Cannon as part of this move.
Is this an admission of failure? I don’t think so. As WFNY’s depth and breadth have grown, the interest in the Blue Jackets didn’t seem to grow with it. Part of that is due to the team’s regression over the past two seasons, and part of that falls at my own feet: with my day job commitments I just didn’t have the resources to provide true wall-to-wall coverage of the team by myself, and I wouldn’t ask the other writers here at WFNY who already work so hard to take on additional duties to cover the team. I also recognize that sects of our readership are focused on specific teams that WFNY covers, and since the original thrust of this blog is those Cleveland teams the Blue Jackets coverage becomes a speed bump blocking them from getting to what they want to read.
For those of you that have followed my Blue Jackets writing week to week over the years, my thanks. Please do continue to follow my work (and the work of Mike, Matt, and Lou over at The Cannon, as well!). We’ll provide every opportunity to connect WFNY’s readers to that coverage, but will do so in a less obtrusive way going forward. In addition, I’m not “quitting” WFNY in the least. I’ll still bring you as much Clippers coverage as I can this summer, and am not going to give up my Browns coverage this fall (assuming there’s football, heh) either.
At the end of the day, it’s the best move for me as a hockey writer and for WFNY going forward. Here’s what WFNY’s CBJ coverage–for those still interested–will look like:
- DP will continue to write weekly 5-Hole columns during the hockey season, though they will connect up more with content written over at The Cannon
- DP will move all other CBJ content that he writes to The Cannon
- WFNY will provide links to CBJ pieces over at The Cannon via the daily WWW feature as appropriate
Thanks again to everyone who’s read my CBJ content over the years. I hope to continue to see you over at The Cannon! Also, many thanks to both the guys here at WFNY for their support of this endeavor for me, and to the gang over at The Cannon for the opportunity!
