I’m going to miss Big Baby
Wow. Granted, Rodgers didn’t have a stellar season but I’m still surprised they cut him. What’s with the timing on these? Why now?
Seeing Robert Royal on there almost makes up for losing Rogers for nothing….almost.
I see the turnstile is going to be cut, no big loss there. My guess is that they cut Rogers for attitude and work-ethic shortcomings.
Bye-Bye 3-4.
And our long national nightmare at RT is over.
Why didn’t we try to trade Rogers? There must be a team interested in him…
So does this mean were going DT at #6? I am kind of shocked by Rogers and Coleman. Not that they are great, but they were solid contributors in a position of no depth.
Trim. The. Fat.
But yeah, to echo sealedhuman, could we not trade any of these fools and at least get something – anything – back in return?
Alright folks, let’s all remember that the NFL is not a big trade league even when you are trying to trade GOOD players . I would say that based on age (all of them), weight (Rogers), and inability to play a lick (St. Clair) NONE of these guys very good trade bait.
I’ll bet that we never even shopped them. It would be a waste of time.
Look at it like this: If you were a GM and Heckert called you one day and said “What’ll ya gimme for 2 over-the-hill 3-4 LBs, an old overweight,15 play a game DT or a RT who is too slow to even trip over his own feet?”
Would you laugh at him? Hang up? And more importantly, would you ever take a call from him ever again? Heckert has a reputation to maintain. He can’t be that guy from your fantasy league that offers you 2 of his backups and a guy on IR for Aaron Rogers.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think that trades are an option until the new CBA is negotiated. As for the cuts…I wish David Bowens well. He played with a lot of heart and made the most of his ability. I’ll always remember him batting down the final pass of the game where we FINALLY beat Pittsburgh last year.
I know Royal had stone hands but after we signed him two years ago he came over after the first open practice to the public and signed autographs while all the other players ran to the locker room. He actually stood in front of my buddy and I and talked to us for a good 3-4 minutes about playing TE in the NFL.
I know we don’t pay the players to be good dudes, but he seemed like he was actually a nice guy and was a good blocker (now if we are talking about catching the ball with anything that resembles consistency that is something totally different). I’m a little sad to see him go.
I’m pretty sure that trading isn’t allowed right now, and I read somewhere that no trades will be happening until a new Collective Agreement is signed, which might be…never?
I agree with the rest of those guys obviously in terms of not being able to trade them but I really think we could have gotten something for rogers. We probably just cut him to get rid of his contract and save some money before the new CBA is negotiated. Probably missed an opportunity to add a late round draft pick to save a few bucks.
Probably was Rogers’s fat contract, along with his fat, that made him hard to move.
Believe him to be one of the most physically talented linemen of the last couple decades. But the NFL weeds out the tin men, the scarecrows and the cowardly lions, even those that won the genetic lottery.
Although I can buy the fact that there probably isn’t a market for these players, it’s confusing to me that a team that is so thin like us can spare to cut Kenyon Coleman and Shaun Rogers especially if we’re switching to 4-3. With the switch cutting Bowens makes sense but the other two? We’re thin enough in our front seven as it is.
@JO – they wouldn’t be doing this without a plan. To me, this signals D-line in the top 3 rounds, build through the draft, etc.
Even given Rogers’ physical gifts, as Harv mentioned, the line wasn’t going to be more than a jury-rigged mess. Better to purge the Mangini-era stock players (Rogers excluded) and infuse some young talent into our system. A James Harrison-like hit on a free agent would be nice too. Yeah, get on that Heckert.
I really don’t understand the NFL at all. we CUT Shaun Rogers?
We took Brian Robiskie in the 2nd round…but we can’t use Shaun Rogers…
What I like about this is that the FO is being proactive. They clearly know who needs to stay and who needs to go. I’m sure Heckert has a plan in place to rebuild the D line. The more I think about this the more I like it.
@Mark – absolutely. I like the decisiveness. Hope there’s some communication w/ the fanbase about the rationale, but this is national security…I mean the NFL
:-/.
so let me get this straight. for the last three years we’re shoe-horning corey williams, kam wimbley, robaire smith into a 3-4. and NOW that we could have a rubin-rogers interior anchoring a 4-3, he’s gone.
we had the wrong personnel for a 3-4 the last four years. now the we have the horse to play a 3-4 we’re changing to 4-3. smh.
any chance that we re-sign rogers with some incentives to come in in shape?
kinda looks like we’ll be passing on aj green if he’s there, doesn’t it?
Well, I got my wish about St Clair going. Honestly, it seemed like we’d almost do better to have nobody in that spot than put him in.
@Jim – do you really think Rogers is the type of player who could anchor a super bowl d-line? Maybe the Rogers who exists in the realm of the forms, but not the chronic slacker we’ve seen the past 3 years. The guy can’t stay on the field and his effort is woefully inconsistent. At his age, none of that is going to change w/o significant financial incentive, and even then I’d still prefer a hungry young guy from a college w/ a winning culture.
Every single D-line in the NFL turned into Derek from “The Waterboy” whenever they played the Browns.
D-line: “Who’s it gonna be… who’s it gonna be…”
[They all spot John St. Clair, the worst starter the Browns have had in years. He’s shaking and whimpering.]
D-line: “Heh. Oh, yeah. There’s my b—h.”
[They all run over St. Clair, flushing the QB out of the pocket and causing another ball to be thrown into the eighth row.]
I dont know if I would call him an anchor, but definitely a guy that can be effective in the right situations and healthy. Now, maybe theres more to his injuries then leading on, or Holmgren et al didnt like his attitude. I thought we’d have Rubin Rogers and a 3rd guy rotating the interior of a 43, esp. since Jauron was reported to have really liked him in Det.
I think its terrible were switching to the 4-3 anyways. What is this the 1940s. While were at it, why dont we put cribbs at quarterback and run the triple option. Its impossible to fool defenses anymore in the 4-3, thats why all the good defenses that get to the quarterback have complex blitz schemes out of the 3-4 where you dont know whos coming and whos staying back in coverage. Its also more effective against the run. What a shame were not getting with the times.
Ya, the Bears had a pretty bad D. Same with Tennessee.
If you have good players your scheme wont matter as much. If I know I can punch you in the face harder then you can hit me Ill go toe to toe. We just cant hit harder. Either way, whatever D you run you need the personnel to fit. The browns just dont have any pieces.
I think this has to do with the current “no cap in existence” state of the NFL. Rogers’ terminated contract won’t count against the cap if one is reinstated. I don’t know if that might be the case for the others.
I think that maybe with the new CBA thing coming about, and free agenecy possibly not existing, no teams would show interest, making the browns cut Rogers since we didnt want to pay him his roster bonus next month for being an overwieght, underachieving waste of roster space. I would of loved to see us get a good trade out of him, but i think the CBA thing played our hand for us. Good news is we freed up (I read somewhere although I cant remember where) like 19 mil this season? maybe once free agency does start we will be slinging money around to try and fill spots we couldnt in the draft?
I approve this message.
