Browns Could Do Worse Than to Draft the Next Matthews

January 11, 2011William Buford made the play of the game for the Buckeyes, even though Minnesota thought it was a foul. The Buckeyes had a three point lead as the final seconds of the game were winding down and Buford challenged Austin Hollins’ three point shot which never made it anywhere near the basket. Thus ended the torture of watching Minnesota come back from 18 down with approximately eight minutes to go in the game.
Thad Matta was quiet about the referees while alluding to his unhappiness with various calls. Minnesota’s coach, Tubby Smith, wasn’t so quiet regarding Buford’s play on Collins. “It was a foul. It was a foul. Any other questions?”
The Buckeyes improved to 16-0 (3-0 Big Ten) for the season. The second ranked Buckeyes were really convincing for the majority of the game. David Lighty and Jared Sullinger led the way for the Buckeyes. Lighty had 19 points and the man who seemingly wakes up every day with a double-double had 15 and 12.
Trevor Mbakwe was the one guy on Minnesota’s roster that really tortured the Buckeyes. He was working hard in the paint all game long where the Buckeyes usually dominate. Mbakwe had 16 points and 12 rebounds amongst the trees down low including Sullinger and Dallas Lauderdale. The 6’8″ 240 pound junior is averaging a double-double for the season, so I guess it shouldn’t be that big of a surprise.
What was a surprise was reading this morning that Mbakwe was jailed on Monday night. Mbakwe is alleged to have violated a restraining order filed against him by a former girlfriend, but get this. He violated the restraining order by posting on her Facebook wall. Maybe Trevor ought to do himself a favor and just unfriend anyone who has a restraining order against him in the future.
Back to the Big Ten… So now the Buckeyes, Purdue and Illinois are the only remaining teams that are undefeated in Big Ten games. Ohio State has Michigan on Wednesday night, while Purdue will face Minnesota on Thursday night. Illinois is next up against Penn State on Tuesday. There’s a long way to go in the Big Ten schedule, but currently Ohio State #2, Purdue #8, Illinois #16, Wisconsin #21 and Minnesota #25 are all ranked in the ESPN/USA Today rankings.

This game was insane to watch.
I’m hoping the end of that game was a one time occurence of being up big and losing focus, and not a sign of things to come.
Lighty has really turned up his offensive game this year. Unfortunately, he’s such an aggressive defender he gets a lot of fouls, which leads to him sitting on the bench instead of out there scoring in the 20s.
Maybe I missed the final score…I’ll go check.
