Cavaliers to Introduce Dunk Team
December 31, 2010The Browns Will Win If…
December 31, 2010As 2010 winds down, WFNY commentariat has been found asking themselves if this year was truly the worst in the history of Cleveland Sports.
Losing, front office turmoil, losing, free agency, injuries, losing and losing. Does that about sum it up? After the jump, we begin our trip down the 12-month memory lane, discussing the good, the bad and The Decision. Buckle up…
January:
To Varejao (va-RAY-zhao): v. To use grit, gumption and gut instinct to do the unexpected.
In what was one of the better ways to start a New Year off right, Anderson Varejao – of all people – hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to beat the Atlanta Hawks in front of a sold out crowd at Quicken Loans Arena. It would be one of about 40 wins that the Cavaliers would amass over the course of 2010. Unfortunately, only eight of those wins came between October and December.
The Hawks would plead to the NBA about some clock malfunctions that allowed the Cavs to score an extra point or two throughout the game. NBA said, “thanks for playing, try again.”
Not long thereafter, the Ohio State Buckeyes would give the Orgeon Ducks the businessas millions watched. The Bucks were pretty heavy underdogs amongst the pundits, but Terrelle Pryor would play the game of his life, and somehow, Jake Ballard caught that pass.
Rick would later deem this game as one of his top-five moments of 2010 and it is tough to disagree.
With regard to the Browns, they had just finished rolling off four straight wins, one of which was against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was the perfect recipe for what would be inflated hope, but hey…it sure was fun. Piling on to the hope was then-Philadelphia Eagles GM Tom Heckert who would come to Cleveland to interviewwith the recently-added Mike Holmgren to fill the vacant general manager position within Berea.
Oh, and he took the job.
What Heckert would walk into was a media barrage at the hands of Joshua Cribbs who would tell anyone who would listen that he wanted a new contract. Radio hosts, television shows, Twitter followers… You names it. Cribbs would have t-shirts made, hold autograph signings and get all of Cleveland in his corner. Oh, and it worked.
Oh, and Craig had this to say…
With that said, the Browns should probably start thinking about giving Eric Wright an extension. Wright will be a free agent after next season, so it is a more typical contract negotiation than Josh Cribbs’ who is in the middle of a 6-year deal currently.
Eric Wright is an important part of the Browns and has shown the ability to play at a high level and also improve over time.
Woops! Well, at least there were good intentions…
Eric Mangini and staff gets retained! But why?
Who remembers the epic battle between the Cavaliers and Lakers without Mo Williams? It was supposed to be revenge from the day Lakers fans littered the Staples Center with foam fingers. Yeah, not so much.
We finally got to meet Manny Acta. I wonder if he knew what he was getting himself into…
And another guy we got to meet? World Wide Wes…
Stay tuned for more throughout the rest of the day…
